“NOOOOOO!” Vanessa screamed, her eyes instantly reddened and glistening with tears.
Despite the sharp pain in her ankle, she pushed herself off the ground, bearing through the agony as she bolted forward with unwavering determination.
Swiftly, she slid on her knees, perfectly timed to catch Millie’s falling body in her arms, cradling her carefully.
Grey was about to rise to his feet when the men surrounding him angrily hammered their earth clubs onto his fingers and the back of his leg, forcing him to yelp in frustration and anger.
Clarice dashed forward without hesitation, sliding beside Vanessa, who held Millie tightly against her chest, tears streaming down her cheeks and onto the fragile body she held.
“Millie? Millie? Millie, open your eyes, you stubborn little punk.” Vanessa frantically called, tapping her sister’s face repeatedly, panic dripping from her voice.
Millie’s eyes slowly fluttered open, her ragged breath hitching as she blinked up at Vanessa.
“Wh…why are you calling my name so much? It’s not like I’m dead or… or something.”
“Millie, Millie, please hang in there. We will get you help as soon as possible, just please, stay with us.” Clarice pleaded, shaking the little girl gently but urgently.
Millie tried to speak, her breath uneven.
“Mu…mum? Am I… am I going to die?”
Clarice shook her head vehemently, tears streaming in unstoppable waves.
“No, my love. You won’t die. I promise, you will get help. Stand up now.”
She reached out, gently grasping the little girl’s hand, but then…
“I feel… cold.” Millie groaned weakly, her tiny hand slipping limply from Clarice’s grasp.
“Millie? Millie?” Vanessa shrieked, frantically tapping her face in desperation.
“Argh!” Grey groaned, tears spilling down his face as he slammed his fists into the ground repeatedly, his shoulders rising and falling with agony.
His teeth ground back and forth, rage and grief entwined, his hands pounding the floor again and again.
“Millie?” Vanessa called desperately again, feeling a trembling hand on her shoulder.
Turning, she saw Clarice shaking her head, lips quivering, hands trembling uncontrollably as tears streamed down her cheeks.
“Mum, she…she’s not responding. Millie isn’t waking up.” Vanessa cried, horror flooding her voice as she looked at the lifeless child in her arms.
“Millie? Wake up, dear. Okay, I promise, if you wake up, I won’t call you names again, I won’t bother you anymore. Heck, you can have anything you want. Just please… wake up!”
“Vane…Vanessa,” Clarice choked out, tears welling uncontrollably.
“She’s gone. Our Mil…Millie is gone.”
“No, mum. I don’t believe this. She can’t be gone. I promised to stay with my sister forever, and so did she. She can’t…”
“Then how about I send you to live with her forever?”
The callous, cruel voice sliced through the room like a razor, cutting the tension like ice. Grey slowly lifted his head, glaring at the figure floating above.
The next second, he twitched his hands, and shadows snaked rapidly around Vanessa. In a flash, she shot upward like an arrow, drawn toward the floating man.
“NOOO! Vanessa! Please, let her go!” Clarice screamed in anguish, her voice breaking.
“You have taken one girl from me. Please don’t take the other. I beg you!” She bowed her head to the floor, desperate and pleading, tears soaking the ground beneath her.
Grey’s teeth ground together violently, his eyes blazing as he stared at the man above, whose gaze was fixed on him with a twisted smile visible beneath the mask.
“I am not merciful,” the man spat coldly.
A massive wind sword shot forward in an instant toward Vanessa. She froze for a heartbeat, eyes wide in horror.
A faint smile touched her lips as she slowly turned her head to Grey, who could only stare back with tears in his eyes, powerless and paralyzed with grief.
“These past few months with you… they’ve been the best. I never knew what love was until I met you. I know you don’t feel the same, but I want you to know that…”
TCHWK!
The sword tore through her fragile body, her head jerking violently, breath hitching sharply as blood sprayed.
The shadows relinquished their grip as she plummeted through the air, limp and lifeless, eyes half-closed, her final moments stolen in a single, horrifying instant.
“NOOOOOO!” Grey and Clarice screamed in unison, their voices echoing through the room, raw pain and fury intertwined, hearts shattered at the sight of her falling body.
The Supreme Magus’ chest tightened immediately as a crushing wave of helplessness washed over him like a suffocating cloak.
THUD!
The impact echoed violently as Vanessa’s body crashed onto the ground, her breathing ragged and shallow, tears trickling from the corners of her eyes.
Yet the faint smile remained, her mind replaying every cherished moment with her family and especially with Grey.
“Vanessa! Vanessa, no! Not you too!” Clarice cried, her eyes blazing red as she grabbed the girl’s head, shaking her desperately.
But Vanessa was no longer hearing anything.
A creeping darkness slowly closed in around her vision, her body growing numb, her breath faltering like someone suffering a sudden seizure.
The final face she saw was Grey’s. She smiled tenderly.
“I love you,” she whispered before her eyes slid shut, her breathing ceased, and her limbs fell lifelessly to the side.
“NOOO!” Clarice roared as her forehead crashed onto Vanessa’s chest, sobbing uncontrollably.
Grey’s fists clenched tightly, his nails digging into his palms as he pressed his face into the dirt, sobbing helplessly. He was forced to watch two innocent lives vanish because of him.
“Man, that was oddly satisfying,” the man commented from above.
Grey lifted his head, glaring at him with blazing hatred, teeth grinding rhythmically as Clarice’s broken sobs filled the air.
“I could have killed you with a simple snap of my fingers, but I realised something. The greatest pain, the purest death, is watching your family disappear right in front of you while you remain completely useless.”
Shadows wrapped around Clarice instantly, dragging her upward while her arms hung limply at her sides.
Not dead, but shattered beyond movement as she stared at her daughters’ bodies below.
Moments later, she was suspended directly before the floating man who smirked behind the mask.
Facing the terrifying mask, Clarice stared straight into the hollow sockets.
“You’re a monster and I hope karma will catch up to you. I pray you die a horrible death, you will be so tortured mentally and physically that you will beg for death at the top of your lungs.
You won’t get it, you will be torn from limbs to limbs, you will be suffocated, losing your bodily functions but you won’t still die. After all the blood in your body has been drained, that’s when you will be granted death. That’s my curse on you, you monster!”
The man paused for a moment, the air itself feeling like it held its breath, waiting for his response.
It came as a soft whisper.
“Monster, huh? You can call me that.”
His gaze shifted toward Grey.
“Remember this. Even with all your affinities, all your strengths, and all your powers, you failed to save those girls. And you will still fail to save her.
I didn’t kill them. You did. Your helplessness, your foolishness, your naïve stupidity… those are what slaughtered them, not me.”
