Chapter 728: Playing with Fire
Back when she’d completed that initial flight quest, she had even saved Ethan’s life. Her completion had directly triggered the official launch of the Aerial Mount system. Ethan, who had just hit level 60 at the time, managed to take off instantly while being pursued, pulling off a nail-biting counterattack.

The follow-up quest was the Aerial Combat Training. She had completed it easily back then, thinking it was no big deal. In reality… for the average player, Aerial Combat Training was notoriously difficult. Once players reached level 60 and acquired flying mounts, they could accept this quest. If they failed, their flying mounts would remain mere transportation. Successfully completing it unlocked the true Aerial Combat function, allowing them to coordinate with their pets to dominate the skies.

“Get ready… Now!”

The moment they entered Lyla’s maximum range, Ethan halted his flight.

“Rapidfire Barrage!”

Lyla drew her bowstring, her fingers a blur.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh…

Nine arrows shot forth in a seamless line, appearing as one continuous streak. They flew straight for the Mana-Forged Colossus’s head.

Thump, thump, thump…

The arrows, whistling sharply, struck its forehead and exploded on impact.

-356!

-698! Critical Hit

-215!

-469! Critical Hit

…

A string of damage numbers popped up. The highest critical hit couldn’t even break 700! It was a stark reminder that Lyla had the highest DPS in the entire Renegade Alliance.

The Colossus’s health bar instantly became visible. A staggering 40 million hit points. A pure, unadulterated damage sponge.

“Wrong spot, wrong spot! Aim for its chest! There’s an Arcane Core there!” Ethan yelled as the Colossus, now aggroed, began to move. He banked sharply, controlling his speed as he shot towards the canyon where Leo’s team was waiting.

“Ah… Got it!” Lyla replied. Normally, her Eagle Eye skill could reveal a monster’s weak points, but this thing was so far above her level that the skill provided no information.

“Double Shot… Aimed Shot!”

Lyla activated a self-buff and unleashed her strongest single-target ability. Because she was standing on Ethan’s back while he moved, she didn’t have to worry about the channeling time being interrupted by movement.

After the five-second channel completed…

THUMP, THUMP!

Two arrows, wreathed in spiraling energy, shot out almost simultaneously. This was the effect of Double Shot, causing the next Aimed Shot to fire two projectiles at once.

BOOM! BOOM!

The two arrows slammed into the Colossus’s chest plate one after the other.

-12,693! Critical Hit!

-12,695! Critical Hit!

This shot had incredibly lucky timing; both arrows scored critical hits.

WHUUUM-WHUUUM!

The Mana-Forged Colossus let out a deafening mechanical roar, a sound that was not only piercing but also sent a nauseating pressure wave through their chests. The behemoth stretched its long, pillar-like legs and began to run.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

It charged forward, its chassis oddly upright and chest thrust out… looking absolutely punchable!

Ethan, however, didn’t dare stop to oblige. He beat his wings, pushing his speed to the maximum. The thing’s running speed was terrifying, almost keeping pace with his flight. Fortunately, the distance wasn’t great; over a longer chase, he’d undoubtedly have been caught.

Lyla, on his back, went to town. She unleashed a relentless barrage of combo skills, treating the colossal machine like a stationary training dummy. It was an incredibly satisfying feeling.

“This is amazing! I think just the two of us could take it down!” Lyla shouted excitedly over the wind.

“Amazing? Not as amazing as back in the lodge, was it?” Ethan chuckled, the sound a low, teasing rumble as he glanced back.

His words made Lyla’s body jolt, a sudden weakness washing over her. They instantly brought back the memory of what had happened in the wooden lodge earlier. A wave of heated embarrassment rushed downward, making her legs go so weak she nearly collapsed.

“You… You’re the worst!” Lyla stammered, her knees pressing together as she sank into a kneeling position on his back. She smacked him on the shoulder with the sturdy frame of Frostbound Reverie.

-5,691! Critical Hit!

[System: You have been attacked by “Lyla”. You are permitted to retaliate!]

“Holy shit…!” Ethan yelped as the blow knocked him sideways. A massive critical damage number floated above his head, and his health bar plummeted by more than half. He nearly spiraled out of the sky.

“Whoa, the Boss is hit!”

“The Boss is a beast! He took a hit from the Colossus and didn’t die!”

“Yeah, the Boss is insane!”

The text in the guild chat channel scrolled rapidly. A quick glance made Ethan want to facepalm.

“Trying to kill your man, you little menace?” he shouted, stabilizing his flight path.

“Hmph!” Lyla stuck out her tongue. “I forgot to change my attack mode, okay? Don’t be so mean! And here I was thinking… since you always seem to have so much… energy… to spare… and neither I nor Amber can handle you alone… maybe we could… you know… together… find another woman to help… Ugh, forget it!”

She muttered this disjointed, half-whispered rant, then stood back up and resumed her volley of arrows against the Colossus.

Ethan’s brain, however, nearly short-circuited. He flew on autopilot, wings beating mechanically, his mind completely occupied by her words.

‘What did she mean?’

‘Can’t handle me alone?’

‘Together?’

‘Find another woman?

‘…Who?’

The image of a certain elegant, composed face flashed unbidden through his mind. He shook his head violently.

‘No… This is a trap! he screamed internally.’ He still couldn’t figure out why Lyla, after finding out about him and Amber, hadn’t exploded. Instead, she’d… well, pushed him down. And now she was talking about… together? And “finding another woman”? This was world-shattering, mind-bending talk that was about to drive him insane.

He desperately wanted to ask, Together? When? And who’s the third? But he didn’t dare. He was afraid… Afraid Lyla would suddenly turn around and put a Rapidfire Barrage through his skull. If they were alone, fine. But if she suddenly went berserk and headshot him in front of a thousand guildies… the humiliation would be too much to bear.

Thankfully, the distance from where they aggroed the Colossus to the canyon wasn’t far.

“Leo, get ready to seal the entrance!” Ethan yelled as he shot over the canyon.

The Mana-Forged Colossus thundered in right behind him.

“Now!”

The instant the colossal machine entered the canyon, Leo led a charge of over two hundred shield-bearing tanks, swarming its legs.

THUMP! CRUNCH! BANG! A series of shield bashes and body blocks echoed.

The Colossus’s feet were trapped. Every step required immense effort to lift, and when its foot slammed down again, the melee fighters and tanks below would scatter, only to regroup and press in once more.

Ethan and Lyla flew straight out over the far edge of the canyon. The Colossus, now stuck and with its aggro firmly fixed on Lyla, began to wander blindly, trying to find a way out to pursue her. But countless “obstacles” hampered its movement at every turn.

“Ranged, light it up!” Ethan commanded.

The prepared ranged players on the cliffs erupted. A torrent of spells and projectiles, following Ethan’s earlier instruction, converged on the glowing Arcane Core in the Colossus’s chest. They had zero concern about pulling aggro. First, the Colossus couldn’t reach them on the cliffs. Second, the thing had already lost two percent of its health on the way here. Lyla alone had shredded that much of its massive health pool. With hate that firmly anchored, what did they have to fear? Even Leo, down below as the main tank, would have a hard time pulling that aggro back.
