Chapter 349 – Eternal Companion
Everything was razed to the ground in a whole fifteen kilometers, and that was quite a literal description.
Be it trees, wandering beasts, unlucky folks who were trying to survive in that moving shadow, and even the shadows themselves…all of them were burned to crisp by the wrath of The Sun Empress.
She had used her full strength on that attack, using her concept, her solar intent and her numerous traits in order to completely obliterate the life-weapon of the man she came to feel an intense hatred to kill.
There was no mercy left in her, and Shamsi was ready to slaughter the two beings who were threatening her empire.
But the attack had left her drought of any energy. The current condition of her body was enough proof of that fact.
Shamsi was standing, yet she was shaking and wavering like a leaf caught in a storm. She was doing her best to not fall, her pride not allowing her knees to touch the ground because of children.
Her whole skin had been peeled away by the heat, leaving only her muscles and tendons visible to all.
Her golden rotating eyes were bleeding gold, and her left shoulder was completely obliterated. Added to that, her stomach was wide open for the world to see. There, a horrifying scene attacked one’s eyes.
One could see Shamsi’s melted organs and intestines, added to that a dreadful stench of corrosion in every one of her cells.
Her blood itself was being corroded.
Finally, Apollonia failed to stand steady and fell on her knees, her head feeling like something was cracking it open.
She cursed wrathfully.
She felt her mana being almost completely burned away, leaving only a sliver of it. Added to that, her bloodline had been touched.
That thought left her jarred, wondering how a God-bloodline could be burned. But that crimson sword did, even though the effect was not that significant.
Her emotions burned hotter and more wrathful the more she thought about how one dared to touch her own bloodline.
White fire began to lick sporadically at her body, trying to heal her but to no avail. Even the fire of the phoenix had its limit.
‘You need to stop and go, Shamsi. Your wounds are dire.’ The White Phoenix — Blanche — advised to her host. Shamsi’s state was too apocalyptic, and she needed rest to recover.
The battle of the Moon had already taken a toll on her. She had used her white fire far too much to heal, and now facing two abnormal youngsters, the Empress was at her limit.
If she didn’t heal immediately, not that she would die, but she would have permanent scars left on her.
But Blanche knew well that the empress would not listen. The emotions burned inside her eyes were nothing but wrath and hatred and also…vengeance.
And the wrath of a Sun, most especially of an Asterion, would never quench until the world itself became ashes.
“Heal me, Blanche.” The empress ordered, her eyes fixated on the burned sword before her.
The crimson sword was half melted, and Shamsi couldn’t believe her eyes. The sword had received the full power of her attack, being the main target, yet only a part of it was melted away.
And also, the sword was faintly glowing and vibrating. She raised her hand to hold it only for the sword to disappear.
Apollonia raised her head and looked far in the distance, watching her two opponents.
The sight of them sent a bolt of burning fire of vengeance inside her soul.
She gritted her teeth, eyes dripping molten fire,
“HEAL ME!!!” she growled at Blanche, as she struggled to get up.
She would kill them.
She would burn them in a fire hotter than anything this world had to offer.
Blanche sighed and obeyed, trying to at least mend her injuries so she could finish what she had started.
Somehow, for some reason, she felt pity for the young man. Something inside him, beyond even her fire being in him, called out to her.
She found herself…not wanting him to die.
But she knew it was impossible. She could not go against the order of her contractor, and her contractor wanted the boy dead.
The Phoenix sighed once more, wondering if indeed, this young boy came from a different timeline.
If yes…
‘Then why? How? Only that shapeshifting guy liked to change timelines as if it was his playground. And the only one who could do it in fact was Him. No matter the method one’s used. Only Him could go to the past and have an impact on it.’
Then how was someone else able to touch the concept of History that was exclusive to Him?
Blanche didn’t know. And in all honesty…
‘I do not want to know.’
Knowledge was a burden. And she would rather die a fool than be burdened by crushing knowledge even for an immortal like her.
While The Sun Empress was slowly getting up, Blanche healing her bit by bit, and walking toward Kaden and Aurora, the duo were in a worrying state.
Aurora was doing her best to not lose consciousness, the pain of her melted left arm splitting her mind and shattering her resolve.
She wanted to cry, to weep, to wail in agony.
She could feel that her arm was lost — and that forever — burned by a concept she could not even fathom. A concept with divinity.
‘Ah…it hurts…’ she brokenly thought.
Yet she forced herself to get up, looking at Kaden beside her, whose eyes were lifelessly staring at his sword.
An Origin sword. A life weapon.
It was doubtlessly a powerful Origin, but no Origin was without weaknesses. It was the same for the Warborn’s Living Weapon Origin.
They were special, and their connection with their users was more profound than anything. And that was exactly why, when something happened to their weapon, they felt it even more deeply.
Reditha was burned completely by a conceptual fire added with at least Exalted-level intent. She was not dead yet, but Kaden could sense she would soon die.
And her dying meant his Origin would be broken, and he would be a Wasted.
It was a thought worthy of fear.
But at that time, Kaden was not thinking of that. All his thoughts, feelings and emotions boiled down to one single realization…
“R-Reditha…die?”
His words were broken and sounded like a whimper. His mind was submerged by a wave of pain deeper than physical and even deeper than soul.
His pain touched his very Origin. And it was unbearable.
With all his holes bleeding nonstop, Kaden staggered forward, raised his shaking hands and took Reditha inside his bloodied embrace.
Reditha quivered, then glowed weakly.
‘I-I am sorry.’ the sword wheezed.
Kaden’s body shook as Reditha’s weak voice boomed inside his mind. It was no longer flirtatious, no longer heavy with madness, no longer hungry for blood.
It was the voice of one about to die.
And like most of death, it was heavy with regrets.
Still, Kaden could do nothing but watch, his mind unable to think of anything to say, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly.
His tears fell. One, two…then it became a heavy rain that patted the floor beneath.
He suddenly flinched, feeling someone hugging him from behind.
He turned mechanically his head and saw the crying face of Aurora, her eyes filled with poisonous guilt.
“It’s because of me.” She whimpered.
It was because of her wish for vengeance that all of this was happening. It was because she wanted justice for herself that they were about to die by the hands of a Sun.
Ah…
Who were they fooling?
They were only two weak beings with nothing but a domain, wanting to go against an Elderling.
They knew the risk. They said they were ready for the possibility of death. But they were lying.
They were not.
Aurora did not want to die. She didn’t want to lose the freedom she finally obtained thanks to Kaden.
She wanted to live for him, with him, and that for eternity and beyond.
Kaden, too, didn’t wish death. He had so many people waiting for him back in Darklore and Fokay, so many things to accomplish…so many of his words to keep.
He couldn’t die.
Yet he would die.
Yet she would die.
Yet…they would die.
Shamsi was slowly approaching, each of her steps making the ground sizzle with heat. She was at her last breath, but it was more than enough to kill two broken beings whose souls had been beaten by the cruel reality.
Aurora felt her approaching, and became even more sure of the path she needed to take.
She smiled woefully, before raising her only remaining arm, placing it on Kaden’s face and forcefully turning his head to face her.
Kaden’s eyes were red. The red of heavy tears.
Aurora noticed how hurt and lost he was. Once again, she was reminded that Kaden was just a child.
A child fighting gods.
“You have done well, my dear.” Aurora whispered, putting her forehead on his, “let me do my part, please.”
At that moment, even if Kaden’s mind was heavy with the situation of his Origin and Reditha, he immediately understood what Aurora wanted to achieve.
He immediately shook his head vehemently, coughing blood, “No, you can’t—!”
“I will.” Aurora cut him mercilessly, then smiled once more.
“You have given me hope. And in the small amount of time I spent with you, I have truly lived, and I loved every second of it.”
Kaden trembled.
“You are amazing, Kaden. You are only fifteen, yet you are the strongest and most honorable person than anyone I have met. You are fighting gods for me, and that’s more than enough for me.”
She caressed his cheeks.
“You must live. Even if it means I need to sacrifice my remaining life for that to happen.”
“Aurora…” Kaden found himself crying more than he believed he would.
Those tears made Aurora sad, yet happy at the same time.
He loved her. He loved her enough to cry this hard for her.
That was enough.
That was more than enough.
“Kaden…” she began with urgency in her tone, as Shamsi was not far behind.
Aurora’s body began to glow a blinding starlight luster, her whole body becoming made of stars. Tangible stars.
Seeing this scene, Shamsi instantly knew what Aurora was doing. She was finding the path for her death.
At that realization, the Empress picked up her pace, one steps of hers shrinking the distance by miles.
Aurora hugged Kaden even further.
“My dear,” she whispered, her voice going weaker and weaker.
Shamsi was wrong.
Instead of finding the path like she believed, Aurora was giving her power, her being, her entire existence to Kaden.
And as her power entered inside his body, Kaden’s Origin began to mend together in a way never before seen.
Sensing the effect, Kaden’s eyes widened and parted his lips. But before he could even speak, Aurora’s final words reverberated deep inside his mind — loud and powerful,
“I am your shining star, my dear. I am your path. I am your eternal companion. And no matter the kind of lives we would live in any kind of timeline…”
Aurora smiled,
“You will be my dear, my anchor…”
Her voice became a whimper.
‘Ah…I want to kiss him before dying…’
“…and I will always be your eyes.”
Her body immediately became limp. Her last sparkle of life given to the one who gave her life meaning.
Kaden’s body became engulfed in shining stars brighter than the sun, the Mark of Burden glowing.
And the world wept as Kaden’s cries echoed.
