Chapter 376: Are You Kidding Me?!! 1
[Next Day.]
[The Barren Lands]
Sunny, completely unaware of what’s happening in the real world, slowly opened his eyes, staring at the red sky. The crimson expanse above looked less like a morning dawn and more like an open wound, bleeding light onto the desolate landscape.
He turned his head to the east side of the hill top, staring at the rising Sun. It was a sluggish, heavy thing in this realm, dragging itself over the horizon to burn away the night’s chill.
”Here we go.” He helped himself up, his muscles screaming in protest. He stood at the edge of the plateau, watching the creatures below rushing away. The horde of black spiders scuttled like a retreating tide, desperate to escape the searing touch of the light.
He stared at the ones hiding in the hill’s elongated shadow, and a frown appeared on his face. The angle of the sun meant the west side of the hill—his direct path—was cast in a long, triangular darkness, teeming with chittering horrors waiting for a mistake.
Furthermore, he could only continue his journey if the creatures could leave the shadows of the hill, which isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Waiting for the sun to be directly overhead would take hours, hours he didn’t have.
Sunny turned his head to the north side, then at the South. His intended direction was west, towards the artifact, and he wasn’t ready to sit down and wait till the sun fully rise.
He moved his gaze to the North. The terrain there was flatter, bathed in early morning light.
”I will simply stay in the light, no matter what happens… I must get to my destination today!!”
He gritted his teeth and continued climbing down the northern face of the hill, his fingers gripping the jagged rocks, not forgetting his metal rod—his only lifeline.
__
TAP!
Sunny’s feet lightly touched the ground. The soil here was scorched black, brittle like charcoal. He removed the rod from his back, the black goo now dried and hardened upon it, holding it tight in his hand.
”Here goes nothing.”
He started his journey, feeling the gazes of all the monsters around the place. Hundreds of red, beady eyes tracked him from the safety of the shadows, a silent audience hoping for the light to fail. Sunny swallowed the lump in his throat, and continued moving, forcing his legs to maintain a steady rhythm, not slowing down for a bit.
_
After half an hour of walking, he looked up at the sky, seeing the sun almost to its peak. The heat was becoming oppressive, baking the moisture from his skin. He sighed, wiping sweat from his brow, and looked ahead, he was back on the right track.
There it was. A massive natural archway, a rock formation which stood as the gate of this forbidden land. Beyond it lay… something else. He could feel the shift in atmospheric pressure.
”A Hundred yards more.” He calculated, hope surging in his chest.
High above the sky, hidden within the ether, Ezekiel watched the boy’s progress. He tilted his head, his expression bored.
”Let’s make this more interesting,” he murmured. He slowly nodded his head.
He waved his hand, and Instantly, the atmosphere shifted. Winds howled from nowhere, and dark, unnatural clouds appeared, swirling violently as they coalesced and completely blocked the sunlight.
The world plunged into an artificial twilight.
Sunny froze, the sudden drop in temperature sending a shockwave through his body. He slowly turned his head around like a robot, his eyes meeting the churning black clouds… At that exact moment, one thought appeared in his head, primal and screaming:
”Run!”
SCREECH!!!!!
The alarm sounded—a cacophony of shrieks that tore through the silence. Sunny shot forward like a bullet, running with his highest level of speed he could muster.
BAM!!!
BAM!!!
BAM!!
The creatures, who had been observing him for half an hour with hungry patience, now all shot out from the shadows. They charged towards him with bloodlust and killing intent, the ground shaking from their movement as a black tide of legs and fangs surged across the open plain.
”Shit!!”
Sunny forced himself to sprint, his lungs burning, not even daring to look over his shoulder. All that was on his mind was the gate. It was the finish line.
SCREECH!!!
A spider shot black webs from its mouth towards Sunny. The sticky projectile hissed through the air. Sunny reacted on instinct, jumping to the side, dodging it by a hair’s breadth. He didn’t stop, scrambling for traction on the loose soil, and continued running.
SCREECH!!
BAM!
BAM!
”Fuck!! There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky! How come!” He yelled, frustration warring with terror as he increased his speed.
SCREECH!!!
The ground trembled violently. The biggest monster amongst the rest moved faster, its massive limbs tearing up the earth, quickly covering the distance between them and Sunny.
Sunny risked a glance and his blood ran cold.
”You must be kidding me?! This black spider is 5 meters tall and 7 meters long!! It will cut me into half if I get caught!!” Sunny yelled, sweat appearing on his forehead, mixing with the grime of the wasteland.
”30 yards.” He stated, judging the distance to the gate, while the monster was already behind him, its legs digging holes into the ground with the force of pile drivers.
”This guy is right above me!!” Sunny yelled.
A massive shadow fell over him. He leaped to the side, rolling desperately as the monster’s leg smashed down on his previous spot, shattering the rock where his head had been a microsecond ago.
He rolled on the ground, ignoring the bruising impact, stood up and continued running.
”20 yards.”
SCREECH!!
The monster let out an angry shriek, furious at missing its prey. It reared back and shot five webs out of its mouth towards Sunny in a wide spread.
”You bastard!!! When I get my powers back, I promise to kill you!!” Sunny yelled, jumping from right to left, his movements erratic and desperate, dodging all the webs.
WHOOSH!!
A sound cut through the air—not a web, but something heavy.
”…..?!”
”Is that?”
BAM!
