Chapter 539: Unexpected?
‘This… Might be bad…’ Lillian thought to herself, standing inside a room filled with luxurious furniture; this was what the interior of the private boxes was like.
However, unlike what she had planned and expected… She wasn’t in the Scion of the Kirisaya’s private box.
No…
“So… You’re my niece’s lover, am I correct?”
“U-uhm, y-yes sir…”
She was instead in a room with a tall masked man, who was currently sitting on a wide red couch in front of her with his legs crossed over another, staring through a wall of one-way glass.
The man’s attire consisted of a black plague doctor’s mask, thick black gloves, a leather belt around his waist, and a long, dark, tailored hooded cloak.
And woven on the back of the man’s hooded cloak was a large, red insignia of a rose; more specifically, the insignia of the Roselle family…
The person sitting in front of Lillian was the Gardener of Roses.
Lillian gulped. So, the gaze she had been sensing all this time wasn’t a figment of her imagination at all!
‘My plan is already going off course…’
She had known that the Gardener of Roses would be attending the auction, but she hadn’t thought that he would suddenly bring her to his private box.
And what’s worse was that… This wasn’t part of any route inside the game!
What happens onwards would be out of her control and plans… The Gardener wouldn’t suddenly kill her if she said anything wrong, right?
‘Apart from killing, he’s a person that’s inclined to obey rules, in other words, the law.’
So, as long as Lillian didn’t do something that’s obviously against the law and says anything offensive, she should be fine… That should be easy, right?
While Lillian was deep in her thoughts, she flinched at the sounds of knocking at the door.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Glancing at the door, Lillian froze as the Gardener’s voice resounded loud enough for the person on the other side to hear:
“Come in.”
The door gently swung open, revealing one of the event staff, who announced:
“Before the auction begins, do any of you esteemed clients wish to auction off any items you may have?”
The Gardener waved his hand, clearly uninterested in auctioning off any of his items. And seeing this, the event staff nodded before looking towards Lillian, who nodded with a small smile.
Walking over, Lillian held her hand out to the man, who seemed to understand what her intentions were.
While Lillian didn’t have any physical items to auction off, she did have something that she doubted she would ever use.
The Feature Shard she gained by slaying that Gloomgillian, the one that allowed her to secrete a toxic mucus from her pores and throw up water.
Once she had handed over the Shard, she was then given a number for it so that she could retrieve her earnings afterwards.
When that was done, she returned to stand behind the Gardener, who she found to be reading through some kind of news article on his phone.
Although it was rather difficult to tell, due to his phone having some kind of privacy screen protector.
Deciding not to try to intrude any further into his privacy, Lillian turned away before stiffening as she heard him speak:
“There’s plenty of room left on the sofa, come sit down. Don’t mind me and enjoy your time at this auction.”
Lillian gulped again and nodded, deciding to do as he asked and sat beside him, albeit with a bit of a gap in between.
When she took a seat on the cushion, she almost felt her entire rear side sink into the seat; it was just that soft. Lillian leaned back, enjoying the softness of the couch before perking up at her name being called.
“Lillian Ker Arius, that’s your exact name, correct?” The Gardener asked softly.
“Y-yes, sir… Is it possible I may know the reason why you called me into your private box for this auction?” Lillian inquired.
“I merely wanted to meet my niece’s lover, that’s all.” The Gardener responded casually, as though it was obvious.
“I-I see…”
As much as Lillian wanted to believe the Gardener’s words, it was rather hard to with the aura surrounding the man; she was having difficulties talking properly.
With time still left to spare, the Gardener decided to initiate a conversation with Lillian.
Pushing his hand out for a handshake, he introduced himself in a polite manner:
“The Gardener of Roses, I’m the one in charge of all the medical activities in the family. Do forgive me for my late introduction, young lady Arius.”
Lillian nodded, hiding her nervousness as she met his hand and shook it.
But then.
Grip.
“It’s quite rare that my niece would voluntarily socialise with others, even going as far as getting interested in the concept of love, which hadn’t ever happened.” The Gardener gripped Lillian’s hand tighter, pulling her in. “Now, I wonder what makes you so special for her to find interest…”
The Gardener leaned closer, stopping right before his beak met Lillian’s face and stared dead into her eyes.
Lillian shrank a little under his intense stare, finding his aura suffocating within close proximity.
His intense gaze soon subsided as he let go of her hand, pulling away.
“Interesting…” He whispered, “I sense the aura of a Tier 3 mage on you; that’s quite a surprise. Our documents on you only detailed that you had only ascended into the 2nd Tier quite recently.”
Lillian smiled wryly; they had documents on her?
Taking off her mask and setting it aside, Lillian responded:
“I had only just become a 3rd Tier just recently, so it’s not surprising that your information on me isn’t 100% accurate.”
“How long did it take for you to clear your Trial? And what rank was it, do you know?”
“About a week, and it was a B-rank Trial, Sir.”
“I see… That’s quite the accomplishment, congratulations, Champion Lillian, for your ascension.” The Gardener congratulated Lillian, calling her by her Tier’s title.
“Ah, I must also congratulate you on clearing out that outbreak earlier today in the Kirisaya District. The witnesses on that day are labelling you quite the hero, if you aren’t aware.” The Gardener commented.
Lillian rubbed the back of her head, clearly sheepish at the praise.
“Thank you for your praise, but any sane person with power would’ve done what I did that day.”
“Well said.”
After the Gardener’s response to her words, a booming voice erupted from within the auction theatre, specifically, at the stage where the biddable options would be shown.
“Welcome all, welcome all to our second Dragon’s Den for this year!”
