Chapter 525: Languages and District Tradition?
[Before the call]

Upon leaving the harbour, Lillian and Viesta explored around, taking in the sight of the architecture of the Eastern nation, Luton.

Since they had a few hours until their train, they might as well.

Looking around, Lillian’s eyes darted between the residents of the city, more accurately, around their hips; everyone was equipped with swords or some variety of blades.

They didn’t seem to be fake or for some kind of festival either. They also didn’t appear like they were mages either, judging by how mana reacted to them—something Lillian was now able to discern with her rise to Tier 3, Champion.

Viesta, noticing Lillian’s gaze landing on the swords, smiled a bit and began to explain; this wasn’t her first time in Luton.

“It’s a tradition here to have a sword on your person whenever you go outside. It signifies readiness and resolve against unexpected threats, something that was common back then due to bandits; it also acts as a little homage to how the Azure Dragon represents foresight, as well.”

“Doesn’t this tradition only apply because we’re in the Kirisaya District?” Lillian asked, noticing the gazes landing on them due to their lack of swords.

Viesta nodded.

“Oh, so ya do know a bit. Yeah, out of the four Divisions of Luton—or Districts, like you said—this tradition only really applies here. Although, no one would really mind you carrying a sword outside of this district, due to all the monster outbreaks that happen here.”

Lillian held her chin, ‘Oh, right… Compared to other nations, Luton is the one that has it the worst.’ Similar to how Japan, in her own world, had a higher rate of earthquakes.

This strange occurrence was considered one of the world’s most interesting wonders, for scientifically and geographically, it shouldn’t make sense.

It wasn’t that the people in the East were neglecting their responsibilities of solving these issues, but the quantity that appears all year round was too much to handle.

‘Leading to constant outbreaks…’

Whisper. Whisper.

Breaking out of her thoughts, Lillian’s ears twitched as she discovered the countless gazes settled on her.

Looking around, she locked eyes with a few passerbyers, who had noticed that she wasn’t honouring their tradition.

They whispered about her.

Lillian’s face twitched when she noticed this, ‘Ah, right… These people are quite judgy about this.’ However, her face might’ve also been a reason for some of the stares.

She might need to invest in a casual mask.

Summoning the Black Maw, she noticed that the weight from it had now completely disappeared!

It was now as light as a feather!

Lillian smiled widely as she sheathed it, extremely satisfied as her dependable weapon had finally accepted her fully.

Right as Lillian was about to lend Viesta her shortsword, she was stopped.

Raising a hand, Viesta wagged her finger with a smug look as she summoned a sabre made completely from vibrant coral.

Lillian sensed a sort of pressure from it.

“Is that the Shard you got?” Lillian asked, already knowing the answer.

“Ya like? Apparently, the Drowned King had a wife who liked the look of coral.” Viesta inspected her single-edged blade. “I can’t say that I’ll use it much, though. Considering I’m not that much of a close-combat person.”

Although the sabre had an odd shape, it definitely had an imposing impression.

After a bit of wandering around, they ended up in a park and found themselves standing in line for some kind of sweet treat.

Lillian watched as Viesta talked to the stall owner, noticing how she spoke in another language.

Unlike the rest of the world, which spoke in Great Melvin, the Eastern Nation spoke in Ancient Keri.

A topic that Viesta decided to talk about as they sat on a park bench with a dango in their hand, while holding a paper plate under it.

Lillian never had a dango before, but she did like the texture of the three white rice dumplings and sweet orange sauce drizzled over them.

“In 1582, Melvin Literature, a Restarian professor of literature, was an advocate of poems and, funnily enough, literature. He discovered the flaws with the current language at the time and, out of frustration, developed his own, which he proudly named after himself. Fortunately, it managed to gain enough traction to be used even today. Of course, it wasn’t perfect in the beginning—needing to be improved upon over the years—but it was a lot better than what we used back then.

“We now hail him as the greatest pioneer for modern literature and writing.”

Lillian blinked at Viesta and asked in stupor:

“Did you just summarise an entire textbook about Great Melvin?”

“There wasn’t that much to summarise, to begin with, but yeah.” Viesta chuckled, taking a bite out of her dango.

After swallowing, she moved on to the language of the East.

“Ancient Keri, made by Lord Keri back in 1140, was originally a language made by him to be used to hide crucial information from other lords at the time. They were vying for the position of emperor. So, with his genius idea and intellect of developing an entirely new functional language, he was able to take the throne before the other lords could decipher his language.

“And with the purpose of exerting dominance, he replaced all used languages at the time with his own. Fun fact, did ya know Ancient Keri is the oldest language that is still being used commonly in modern times?”

Lillian scratched her cheek. She did know about that fact, but…

“I actually didn’t, that’s quite interesting.” She felt like playing along.

[12:00 PM]

“Are ya sure you would be fine by yourself?” Viesta tilted her head, having just been asked to head off to the train station first.

The train wouldn’t arrive until 3 pm, so they still had plenty of time.

Lillian nodded.

“Yep! I can figure my way around with an online translator.” Pulling out her phone, Lillian hovered her thumb over the screen, “And I’m planning on making a call that might take a while, I don’t want to bore you.”

Viesta blinked at Lillian before smiling knowingly, “Oh, I see~… Yeah, yeah, I’ll head on first. Don’t take too long, though~”

Watching as Viesta walked away, Lillian quickly tapped her phone and held it to her ear—excited and slightly anxious whether or not Marionette would pick up or not.

Fortunately, her fears were quickly dashed away.

“Mari~!”
