Chapter 480: Lillian’s Past? [1]
Looking towards the Beetle, which didn’t have a single sliver of worry on its grinning face, he dashed away the thought.

He must have faith in his new master.

As the hailstorm of hardened sand continued to fall, the crown of sand hovering above the Beach Lord continued to spin before slowing down.

And with the crown’s decreasing spin, the size of the hailstorm began to gradually diminish before ceasing.

The Beach Lord blinked its eyes, looking at the cloud of sand that was lingering around its target, settling. But then, it noticed that some part of the cloud was spinning rapidly without its consent.

Its crown of sand began to spin again, rapidly.

Lillian, who was hidden under the cloud of sand, had surrounded herself with a spinning dome of water, allowing her to survive the harsh volley. Albeit, she wasn’t unscathed, obviously.

Pain throbbed through her body, causing her foggy mind to clear up slightly. How foolish was she? Did she expect to beat a Lord with only a single weapon without armour?

Did she expect to beat it solely with her skills and magic? If she had tried to do that with the Jungle Lord, she would’ve inevitably lost.

Even with the use of her techniques, she barely managed to leave anything but shallow scars and remove the barnacles stuck to its glossy bronze shell.

It was a monster that had evolved solely for defence…

Lillian, who was in a crouched position, slowly pushed herself up and gripped the handle of her cutlass. Her eyes were glowing a bit as she flicked her hand, intending to put away her cutlass.

But—

Rumble. Rumble.

—Was momentarily distracted by the tremors through the ground.

The Beach Lord rapidly approached and swung its large left claw in a wide arc, creating winds that dispersed the cloud and revealed Lillian underneath, who widened her eyes.

SPLASH!

Lillian watched as the claw crashed against the side of her water dome, creating a massive dent that was soon buffed out. She poured her mana into the dome while also making a counterattack aimed at its eyes.

Unfortunately, the Beach Lord managed to shift its eyes away, avoiding the attack. However, that shouldn’t matter…

She had faced crabs once; they were the first enemy she had ever thought of since entering this life!

And she had faced this enemy before as well!

She knew about this monster’s attack, which was based solely on the use of sand and its claws. She knew its weaknesses, like how it was sluggish at night and far more difficult in the day…

But not only that… She knew that on the underside of every crustacean, that was where they were the weakest!

Summoning several spears of water, Lillian sent them towards the Beach Lord’s exposed underside, a weakness that could only be exposed due to its towering size.

And, to further split its attention, Lillian summoned another batch of projectiles aimed at its eyes.

By doing this, she knew the sluggish mind of the Beach Lord would become overwhelmed by the actions needed to defend or dodge! While it may be simple movements, it was still a large effort for a body so large!

Met with this conundrum, the Beach Lord moved its eyes out of the way, dodging the water spears.

Lillian’s once crestfallen expression brightened into a wicked smile; the Beach Lord had chosen to prioritise its eyes!

Her wicked smile, once broad, slowly curled downwards into a frown as her eyes shook.

Splash! Splash!

The water spears she had created for the exposed underside of the Beach Lord… Failed…

Not because they were off course or met their target at a wrong angle… But it was because they were too weak to do any damage.

Was… Was her magic always so weak?

This unexpected sight left her in a stupor—and following this unexpected result, there was another.

SWIP. SPLASH!

One of the smaller claws of the Beach Lord had stabbed through her dome, managing to penetrate and reach her!

Lillian quickly held up her cutlass—

CLANG! SPLASH!

—But the force behind the attack managed to push her out of her protective water barrier.

Seeing this, the Beach Lord wasted no time in moving forward.

After a fierce struggle, Lillian managed to parry away the claw and moved to dodge a downward slam that caused the stone ground to erupt.

DUM!

Stabilising her balance and blocking the flying stone shards, Lillian continued to fight onwards. She planned her next moves, she roared out her next moves, and she willed her body to move.

But the more she attacked, the more she swung her blade or used her magic… It barely left a result that could even be noteworthy for a used napkin.

And with each disappointing result, her sense of unease clutched her heart and spread throughout her body using her bloodstream, like a ravenous poison that caused her mind to be impatient for results.

As Lillian fought on, a subtle trembling occurred in her hand… She wasn’t the one trembling. It was the cutlass.

She widened her eyes; she was close!

‘Just a little bit more!’ Lillian screamed in her mind.

Placing one foot after the other, Lillian pulled back her arm for a wide swing for a Tidebreaker Slash. But… Something happened that she or anyone else could have expected.

“H-huh…?”

She tripped.

As Lillian fell towards the ground, she caught a glimpse of a certain necklace with a rabbit foot charm dangling around her neck…

Was… Was it the necklace’s doing? Was it Fate’s doing?

Lillian had no time to think as something struck her waist, gripping it in a tight hold—it was the smaller claw of the Beach Lord.

She bent over instantly, her eyes shooting wide open as she was dragged through the air, crashing into the sandstone wall of the arena.

From the impact on her back, the air in her lungs was squeezed out in an instant, causing her to feel light-headed. But then, a pain like never before came.

Lillian vomited blood profusely, her eyes becoming bloodshot as she felt the pain stemming from her internal organs, stirring around like a cramping stomach ache that felt warm and sharp.

‘They’re crushed…’

Her internal organs from below her waist were crushed…

Weakness fell over Lillian as her eyelids struggled to stay open. Was this… Was this the end?

Lillian, who still kept a firm hold on her cutlass, began to fall into a foggy daze as something from the past became unfurled for her to relive…

A past… She didn’t want to remember…

{Lillian’s POV}

I was never planned to be born. I was never planned to be had. I was a child born between two people of a single night stand.

Despite the countless birth control pills she took and the contraception my father used… I still managed to come out of my mother’s womb despite the odds against my favour.

The saddest news of all, no one besides my parent showed up to my birth. No grandparents, no uncles or aunts, or even friends of my parents showed up to celebrate the day of my birth…

I was fortunate that my parents were able to get together for my sake, but… Instead of a blessing, some other parents would call their child, I was more of a burden.

My parents weren’t the richest or well-off, even before getting together. With me on top of their heavy shoulders, we barely got by.

Even if my parents smiled, I knew, even from an early age… That it was all a lie.

It was hard… Really hard…

Once I reached an age where I was eligible for school, I did my best. I kept my head down and silently learned all I could.

I partook in all educational competitions I was allowed in and scored in the top 3, all so I could show my parents and make them happy… Happy enough to where they could momentarily forget about the hardship plaguing our family.

But because of that, I didn’t have many friends. And many would be considered a stretch. Due to all my time studying and keeping quiet in the corner, I never managed to build upon my social skills much with those around my age.

I was an outcast even among those my age…

And because of that, it started to show when I got into high school.

Because of my quiet and introverted nature, I was an easy target.

To say I was surrounded by bullies in high school would be an understatement. Every chance they had and any reason they could use, they always did something.

A main reason would always be because of my slightly above-average intelligence. Because I came from a similar household to theirs, they always thought I was better than them, but that wasn’t true…

Since I had no one around me, friends or acquaintances, I was always isolated with no one to come running to save me.

The only time I felt safe was when the school’s staff stumbled upon the scene, but that scenario could only happen so many times before my peers learned to become smarter.

But I didn’t care. I really didn’t.

As long as I learned what I needed from that place, I didn’t mind my body covered in injuries that were hidden under my clothes.

I wanted to earn a high-paying job as a doctor, if possible. I knew as long as I studied hard enough, I would be given a scholarship.

This… This was all so I could support my family.

As long as I could give them what they always wanted first, then I didn’t mind experiencing what I missed out on during my younger years.

Unfortunately, such a life plan could only go so far before being interrupted by life itself.

By the age of 16, my mother had suddenly developed an illness that left her unconscious at work. That illness only continued to worsen to the point she lost the feeling in her legs, her immune system weakening to the point she couldn’t even leave a completely sterilised hospital room…

She… She was barely alive. I didn’t even know if such a condition could even be considered barely alive…

And just like that, all the money we had in our family was funnelled into supporting my mother. The hospital covered some of the cost, but it was ultimately us to pay…

I admired the doctors who took care of my mother, but soon enough, our emergency funds were bled dry.

There had even been times when we begged the landlord of the building we were renting to give us more time.

Due to the need for money, my father and I grew apart. The time we saw each other was scarce and rare.

Since I was at an age where I could work, I spent most of my time trying to make some money for the due date to pay for my mother’s treatment. I spent so much time that my grades had begun to fall severely.

From an A all the way down to a D.

The next time I visited my mother and stared through the window of her door, I was reminded of the due date of her treatment coming up in a couple of weeks—$10,000.

A payment for every couple of months.

It was a tremendous amount of money, something that I never once even managed to enjoy as I asked the banks for loans. But, it would be worth it if my mother could one day be cured…

I knew it was wishful thinking, but that was all my father and I had to keep on going.

But then, during another one of my visits…

“At the end of this month, we will be stopping any treatment towards your mother for your sake.”

Why…

What did they mean for our sake?

Hadn’t they been the ones bleeding us dry?

This… This was such bullshit.
