Chapter 478: Culling of the Beach? [2 – END]
His species was born with the ability to think, a blessing granted by the Beach God. And because of that, with their combined might, all monsters that may stumble upon their village were inevitably deterred.

However…

This—… These threats were different!

Whatever kind of monsters they had deterred before were in no way comparable to what they were facing now!

They tore through their line of men in an instant, decimated their homes with a single charge with their horn that pierced through several of their companions or with a single swing with their weapons, which swept everyone away.

The Crabman flinched and hid behind a torn-down sand mound, watching as a fearful creature in the distance devoured his brethren. It had multiple legs and was clearly wounded… But the thing was, these wounds didn’t look like stab wounds…

With its seemingly impenetrable exoskeleton, all attacks made against it were useless! It was also the one who began the attack on their village!

The crabman hid and watched as this fearsome abomination slowly passed by, dripping in blood as its eerier voice cackled in the cold winds, who paused and looked in his direction.

Crimson blood coated its teeth and dripped through the gap in them, while sizzling from its saliva. It grinned broadly, taking a step towards the mound of sand, sensing something hiding.

The crabman shook terribly. He was afraid. He was scared. Please don’t come over here!

He listened to the vibrations through the ground, his heart gripping at his chest as foam began to froth at his mouth from the overwhelming fear.

But then… he felt the vibrations no longer approach him. Instead, it seemed to be moving away, getting farther away.

Quickly noticing this, he braved himself and looked around the sand mound and found that the nightmarish creature was indeed moving away… Why?

It had sensed him, didn’t it? Why was it moving away?

As he was thinking this, an undeniable chill shivered through its muscles. The feeling was colder than any wave that came from the sea!

With his instincts spiking, he looked forward and was face-to-face with a tall creature with black skin and a frail body, whose hands were covered entirely in blood.

And in its hands were two humongous stone weapons that were dripping in warm blood…

He looked up and stared into the monstrous creature’s eyes and found them to be hollow; replaced with two white glowing orbs that flickered at him, as though it was blinking.

He couldn’t stop shaking… It was like he was standing before death itself…!

The glowing orbs in the monster’s eyes then slowly shifted to a dark greenish light as it lazily raised the tip of its spear.

With his experience as a spearmen, he knew that the way the monster angled his spear told him everything he needed to know… It was going to skewer and kill him with a single thrust…

Was he… Was he really about to die…?

He looked towards his large claw, which was commonly used as a shield in his tribe, and looked down at its crushed appearance. His eyes shook and shivered terribly, looking at the spear that was about to descend upon him.

But then!

SWIP! DUNG.

One of his brethren arrived, saving him from certain death by knocking away the spear with all of his strength.

His brethren were in tatters, his shell was cracked, and blood leaked out like he was a broken storage unit.

More and more of his wounded brethren arrived, engaging with the enemy, who didn’t seem the slightest bit bothered by the arrival of his tribe members.

At first, he wanted to fight. He wanted to get up and keep fighting.

He wanted them all to live through this… Through this nightmare!

But then, he caught a glance of the brethren who saved them, who made a gesture with their half-broken claw. He was telling him to run away and that he was no longer fit for combat.

His heart clenched when he was reminded yet again of his condition, the moral from seeing his brethren fighting dissipating inside his chest.

He knew his companion was right and yet… he couldn’t help but feel guilty as he ran away with tears in his eyes that wobbled through the air.

It was even worse when… The person who saved him was someone he had known since the moment he was born!

The moment he was born, he had been the weakest in his tribe, a failure of their species. His body was the softest, and his claw hadn’t been the strongest.

Even a single scratch to his claw would cause him to bleed profusely. And yet, he kept pushing on to become a warrior of their tribe… Just so he could get some level of respect instead of the pity he had throughout his entire life!

And yet… What was he doing? He was running away!

He couldn’t even look back as he ran away, his legs skittering as fast as they could, trying to get farther away from the screams of his brethren behind them.

‘I’m sorry… I’m sorry…!’ He apologised over and over in his mind.

What kind of sick trial was their god putting him—… Them through…?

Why couldn’t he do anything right?! Why was he born so pathetically weak? WHAT HAD HE DONE IN THIS LIFE?!

The crabman, no longer being able to hear the screams of his brethren, dropped as he grasped his head with his fingered hand, screaming through the foam bubbling out of his mouth.

He was such a disappointment…

“KEEE!”

At the sound of a screech that sounded feminine, he looked up and pushed around a corner. And that was when he found a woman of his tribe clutching onto her child, hiding them behind one of the destroyers of his village.

They were small, smaller than them and the destroyers they came with and had white hair…

And yet… his instincts told him that this one was as fearsome or even more dangerous than the other two that he had met!

He watched as they raised a hand towards the woman and children, watching as something began to magically manifest in their hand.

He… He needed to do something!

He can’t stand on the sidelines… His injuries aren’t an excuse! He was a warrior, a proud warrior of their tribe that was meant to protect everyone!

The crabman looked around and found a bloodied spear nearby, held in the hand of his half-eaten brethren. He couldn’t stay to mourn for their loss… But he could avenge them!

Grabbing onto his spear and dashing from behind the corner, he rushed towards the attacker, intending to defend the mother and her child!

Although he knew that he wouldn’t be able to do much, he hoped with his death that the two could escape…

Raising his spear, he aimed the tip towards the attack.

The world became slow, dangerously slow as he watched the destroyer slowly turn in his direction, staring at him with saddened eyes, similar to his.

But why… Why was she sad?

What did she need to feel sad about!?

He watched as the destroyer aimed their hand towards him, smiling. He then heard something come out of their mouth that sounded like words:

“Facing the issue head-on even when you’re scared… You’ve earned my respect, Cruscan of the Kakra Tribe.”

In that exact moment that he heard them speak, he watched as something leapt over the destroyer.

The thing was large and had multiple legs; its face and glossy black shell were covered in blood and gleamed at the sight of him, as though he had fallen into some kind of trap.

It opened its jaws, intending to crush and devour him whole.

However.

He couldn’t care.

He knew he was already going to perish on this very night…

And yet, despite this fear of death clutching his heart like a vice, he felt a warm sense of comfort permeate through him—a feeling he felt the moment he heard the destroyer speak.

He didn’t understand them, and yet, he could feel their intentions of respect behind their words.

Was this what feeling respected feels like?

SNAP! Crush…

Soon enough, after his death, one by one, everyone was devoured, and his village was left in ruins. The only thing that remained was the Lord of the arena below, who had noticed the disturbance in the village above.

But that wasn’t the only thing it noticed for… It had felt something step into its arena. Was it another participant aiming for the position of Lord?
