Chapter 476: Depression Is Not an Simple Matter?
“While they were said to be human, their nature towards humanity and strength were anything but that and their control encompassed over one of the four cardinal seas in this world.

“But tonight, I shall only talk about the Drowned King, who is the youngest out of the four and said to have the pressuring presence equivalent to the Flood King, the oldest and the strongest out of the four.”

Viesta raised a hand, but was then shut down.

“Questions at the end, matey!” The Captain said, watching as Viesta lowered her hand before beginning, “Now then! It was said that the Drowned King appeared from the deepest depths of the south sea—the Sinking Sea—after a gigantic storm caused by the Storm King himself.

“Although the name Sinking Sea wasn’t its original name, the people of this world quickly adopted it as most ships that travelled through this sea were ultimately sunk by ship-eating leviathans and also from an unknown pressure they call it.”

He then went on, talking about a few details about the Drowned Lord before coming to a topic that caught everyone’s attention, except Lillian.

“The Drowned Lord had once reached the 5th Tier; a Tier only a handful could ever reach, while many dream of reaching. But during the Drowned War against the Storm King, the Drowned King sustained a dreadful blow to his Mana Core that knocked him down to the 4th Tier and caused him to be somewhat of a shell of what he used to be.”

Lillian looked down at the Captain’s hand, which was tightly gripped into a fist; so tight to the point where Lillian could see his white knuckles.

He was obviously holding something in, something relating to the Drowned King, which Lillian obviously knew about.

‘The Captain that he speaks so much was killed by the Drowned King.’

This confrontation happened after the Drowned War, which the Captain spoke about. And despite the Drowned King’s state, he still won over the mysterious captain, who was of the same Tier.

Lillian sighed internally, ‘He must be hurting inside talking about the Drowned King. I remember he saw the death of that captain before his very eyes.’

Viesta, seeing as the Captain seemed to be hiding some sort of anguish inside his eyes behind a smiling facade, raised her hand and asked:

“Could I ask about the Drowned King’s name? I’ve heard of the Four Mighty Sea Kings before, but I’m still unsure why they are called that.”

“Oh? Their names? Well, their names derived from the God who assisted them in their times of need. In this case, the Drowned God assisted the Drowned King during some turning point in his life.

“What it was… No body knows besides the Drowned God and the other gods that helped him along the way.”

After possibly an hour, everyone left to return to their respective tents, tired and resting for the day tomorrow… The awaited day when Lillian promised to get them out of this Trial, despite their doubts and scepticism.

Everyone who was… Viesta.

Lillian poked at the fire with a stick that had blackened at the tip before looking to the side and finding Viesta doing the same, sitting beside her.

Lillian smiled a bit and asked:

“Aren’t you going to sleep, Viesta…? Tomorrow is going to be an extremely long day, you know?”

Viesta side-eyed Lillian and smiled as well, placing the stick aside as she adjusted her hat, “I’m aware, Lillian… But ya seemed rather stressed today.”

The corners of Lillian’s lips twitched. Was it that obvious? She chuckled self-deprecatingly and thanked the woman for her company, even though it wasn’t needed; it felt nice.

Viesta nodded, glad that Lillian wasn’t intending to push her away and looked up towards the sky, holding the edge of her cowboy hat and muttered with an amazed look on her face:

“To think today is the first of May…”

Lillian paused her prodding of the fire and nodded a bit.

She had been so focused on tomorrow that she had completely forgotten what day it currently was back on their own world…

Viesta, noticing Lillian’s strangely forlorn expression, sighed and hunched over a bit, leaning against her thighs as she watched Lillian poke at the campfire.

She then asked:

“Lillian… What’s troubling you? You’ve been like this since this morning, it’s concerning, ya know?”

“H-huh? I’m like what?”

“Well, you’ve been lost in your own world, or… I guess just have this aggravated look on your face that made it seem as though you failed in something important.”

Lillian widened her eyes and rubbed the back of her neck.

She put aside the blackened-tip stick and gave a sigh that was filled with stress, “I suppose… I’m nervous about tomorrow. I promised you guys that I would get you all out, but… Now… I’m now feeling the weight of our situation…”

Since this morning, the weight of whether they can escape or not caused her mind to feel heavy; she could even feel her heart clenching in fear…

Viesta listened closely to what Lillian had to say and nodded, “I understand what you mean… The day when that destined day comes, you can’t help but feel scared or anxious. But that’s the way life is… The most expected things are always followed by fear and anxiety.”

She took off her hat and placed it beside her on the log bench, then Viesta turned back to Lillian with a serious expression.

“However… What I want to understand right now is… Why is it that you keep wanting to do everything by yourself and not rely on others?” Viesta raised an eyebrow, “If it’s a matter of how close you are to them, why don’t you share and depend on me? We’re friends, right? Or do you just not depend on me because I’m weaker than you? Are you that foolish—”

“It’s not that! It’s not because of your strength!” Lillian shook her head rapidly as she heard that, refusing such an assumption instantly before letting out another sigh, falling into a momentary, deep thought.

What Viesta said was true… She tried her best to avoid scenarios where the thought of depending on others was the recommended solution. If possible, she would rather face things alone…

“I just tend to like doing things on my own…”

It was a foolish preference… And she knew that very much.

“Mainly because, if it was only me on one team, then…” Lillian slowly raised a hand towards her face with a self-deprecating smile, “Wouldn’t that mean if I were to fail, I would only be failing and disappointing myself rather than having others feeling disappointed in me?”

She hated disappointing others. To the point where it had become a fear that trumped even the fear of death…

Viesta, hearing this, widened her eyes a little at what she heard. She felt something inside her chest boil at what she heard, “That’s an idiotic reason, Lillian! What about the people who depend on you secretly, then? What about them? What if one day, you die to some fiend and leave them behind—?!”

“I KNOW I’M AN IDIOT, I GET IT!” Lillian abruptly shouted, interrupting Viesta, who flinched away; this was the first time she had heard Lillian shout before…

Lillian hunched over and held her head with both of her hands, hiding her face as her eyes and lips trembled.

Despite having the mental age of a 24-year-old and the maturity and knowledge gained throughout her past life, she was immature—childish, even… She knew that.

No matter how much she may try to be or was hailed as smart by her peers, she was still a fool at the end of the day… She knew that.

She was a fool with a foolish reason for her behaviour; she knew that better than everyone!

And yet…

“I-I’m an idiot… I’m an idiot who is so scared to face even the slightest bit of disappointment directed at me…”

Lillian suddenly lowered her hands from her head as she sat straight up, facing Viesta, and grabbed the centre of her chest with a pained and grieving expression.

Drip. Drip.

Viesta watched as tears streamed down Lillian’s face with a shocked expression before stiffening at Lillian’s words:

“But am I so wrong to feel this way?! To be scared this way!? B-because of me… Because of a promise I made… Someone I loved so much died…” Lillian’s eyes wobbled again, spilling out more tears as she recalled the blurry sight of her sickly mother in her hospital bed.

“Do you wanna know what they said to me? They said I was a disappointment for not getting them the treatment they needed… Hahaha—” Lillian laughed a bit with pain in her voice, “H-how do you even respond to that? How do you even live on from that, huh?”

The hand gripping her chest tightened, while she began to wipe off the seemingly never-ending tears.

“No matter what I do… I just can’t seem to stop disappointing people… Is it so wrong for me to want to please everyone I know and love? I know it’s impossible but…”

“I-it’s not entirely impossible for you to—”

“WELL, IT IS FOR ME!”

Viesta, having tried to interject, was interrupted again by Lillian, who had even more to say.

“PHONE CALLS! JUST SOME PHONE CALLS! I JUST NEEDED TO CALL ONE PERSON EVERYDAY, AND YET I SOMEHOW MESSED THAT UP! HOW MUCH OF A SCREW-UP DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO FORGET SOMETHING LIKE THAT?!”

Unable to say anything to that, Viesta kept quiet with her hand still raised in the air towards Lillian, silently listening.

Lillian’s body shook, her body growing hotter, her throat parched, and her lips dry. And yet, she continued to speak with a shaky breath:

“How bad of a person do you have to be that you can’t even keep a promise to save someone who depended on you…? How bad of a person do you have to be that you can’t even keep a simple mental note to contact the love of your life—who trusted you—every day, huh…? HUH!?”

Lillian clenched her jaw and gritted her teeth as she stared down at the shaky hands. She then immediately stood up and summoned the Jungle Lord, who stared down at her.

Viesta, seeing the appearance of the Wendigo, instantly held up her arms as the Jungle Lord disappeared a moment after its summoning, leaving behind a fierce gust of wind that blew out the fire.

***

Quickly setting up the fire again with a lighter, Viesta found that Lillian had disappeared! Had she gone off with the Jungle Lord?!

Immediately getting up, she went to wake up the others, alarming them of Lillian’s disappearance.

Since entering this Trial, Viesta felt a weird feeling about Lillian… Now she knew why.

She knew the reason why Lillian kept doing things on her own, the reason why she kept putting herself in danger without asking for help, even when her life was at risk!

“SHIT! WAKE UP, EVERYONE!”

Viesta’s eyes wobbled as she remembered the look in Lillian’s eyes. She knew that look; anyone would if they were around people long enough!

‘To think she was secretly suffering from depression!’

Could it be that all this time, when Lillian intentionally put herself in harm’s way was… Her unconscious way of wanting to commit suicide!?

***

The Jungle Lord carried Lillian with gentle, but swift speed—fast enough to get where she wanted them to be, and slow enough for her to calm down.

His hooved feet thunderously stomped throughout the forest, disturbing the sleep of countless monsters, which awoke from their slumber. And due to his current speed, they were able to intercept him and Lillian’s path.

But…

To prevent his master from focusing on other matters that weren’t calming down, the Jungle Lord immediately eviscerated the dangers—ploughing through them like a bulldozer.

Not even a splatter of blood reached Lillian, and yet… Blood was spilt everywhere.

Soon enough, the two of them exited the jungle and stumbled onto a beach, where they were met with a massive temple off in the distance, settled on top of a large hill of stone in the water.

And right below it was a deep hole where the Beach Lord’s arena would be.

Lillian was intending to kill the Beach Lord and tear down the Beach God’s Temple…

By herself.

And…

She was going to do it with the cutlass.
