Chapter 260: Chapter 256 – The Buried Prayer and the Rampaging Chains
The sky above the valley had turned the color of blood.
Black mist and divine light clashed, creating a storm that tore the air apart. Every flash was like the spark of a collapsing world.
Sylvia stood in the center of the maelstrom, her black gown whipping wildly as the chains around her spun like living serpents. In front of her, the six elite paladins no longer looked human, their eyes glowed with a strange light, their auras no longer purely divine.
Darian, the shadow paladin blessed by Velgrath, was surrounded by darkness that devoured all nearby light. Cracks spread across his body like fractured glass, and from those cracks, divine light leaked out.
“You think we fear death, vile creatures?” His voice vibrated strangely two tones at once, human and something else. “We’ve given up our souls to stop you.”
Eryndor, the paladin of Nerys, smiled faintly. The water swirling around him was now crimson, reflecting the faces of the dead.
“We are the tide that will drown you, Queen of Death.”
Thalion raised his sword, now blazing like a miniature sun. Vaelric and Lysera radiated darkness and void that devoured each other, while Kaelthas laughed a distorted, broken sound.
“We’ll end in the same hell as you!”
Sylvia’s gaze remained cold, her crimson pupils narrowing.
“You were dead long before this war began,” she said flatly. “You don’t even realize you’re pawns for gods who don’t know you exist.”
“Even a pawn can stall the queen,” Darian retorted and vanished.
SWOOSH!
His shadow appeared behind Sylvia, his blade cutting through space toward her neck.
Sylvia spun around, black chains snapping outward. CLANG! Metal and energy collided in a burst of sparks but this time, Darian’s strike didn’t stop at the surface; he cut through Sylvia’s own shadow.
KRRAAACK!
Space cracked. Half of Sylvia’s body seemed erased, but Queen Flesh and Death Aura merged, reconstructing her form within seconds.
“Try again,” she said coldly.
Thalion dropped from above, his body burning like a star. BOOOOM! His sword slammed into the ground, triggering a fiery shockwave.
Sylvia countered with Chain Technique: Form 2 – Shield, her chains forming a layered black dome. The flames scorched the air but couldn’t penetrate the absolute defense of her chains.
Vaelric raised his hand, space itself trembling.
“Between life and death you belong to neither!”
Sylvia felt the weight pressing on her, but she countered with Void Steps, darting to the side and reappearing right behind Vaelric.
“Death Spiral!”
Chains whirled violently, forming a vortex that drained energy straight from Vaelric’s body. He screamed but laughed through the pain.
“You’re hastening my end… thank you.”
Sylvia stepped back slightly. Something felt wrong, their divine energy was increasing even as their bodies broke apart.
Eryndor stood upon his crimson waters, his eyes glowing faint blue.
“We traded our time for divine power… As long as we still have souls, we will not stop.”
The blood-water surged toward Sylvia, forming spears. SHRRRKK! One pierced her shoulder. She glanced at the wound her skin burned, then healed in an instant.
“I’m getting tired of your games,” she whispered.
She pressed her heel into the ground. BOOOM! The entire field shook.
Black chains erupted from her body, spreading through the ground, shattering stone, binding the rising roots of the Nether Wood.
“Death Aura maximum output.”
Black fog spread outward, devouring the world’s color. Everything within fifty meters decayed earth, trees, even the air itself vibrated with the hiss of death.
The paladins resisted, but their bodies began to fracture. Darian lost part of his face; Eryndor bled from his eyes; Thalion dropped to one knee, while Lysera and Kaelthas screamed as the aura’s corrosion tore through them.
Yet they did not die. Their flesh grew back, reattaching to broken bones but their forms were no longer human. The divine energy within them had merged with something darker.
“Are you… afraid now, Queen?” Kaelthas asked, his voice trembling under the weight of his own power.
Sylvia’s eyes burned with violet fire. “Afraid? No. Just tired of staring at fools who sacrificed everything for gods that don’t even notice them.”
ZRAAAAK!
She swung her hand Venom Reaper Claw erupted, spreading like a storm of poison. The toxic mist engulfed the battlefield, seeping through their divine armor. Their bodies swelled, cracked but kept regenerating unnaturally fast.
Thalion slammed his sword into the ground, fire exploding like a miniature sun. BOOOOMMMM! Sylvia staggered back, but the chains surrounding her held her steady.
Vaelric and Lysera combined their powers of illusion and void merging into a false dimension that pulled Sylvia inside.
The world turned white and endless, and six shadows appeared, attacking from every direction.
SWOOOSH! BOOOM! CLANG!
Sylvia deflected four strikes; the other two pierced her body. Black blood sprayed but her expression didn’t change.
“You really want to die with your blessings, don’t you?”
Chains burst from her body, spinning violently.
“Chain Technique Form 4: Guillotine Blossom!”
CRAASSSHHHH!
Barbed chains erupted from earth and sky, spinning into a vortex of blades. The black thorns cut through everything in their path. Two paladins were hurled into the air, blood and divine light scattering like shattered glass.
Eryndor tried to form a wall of water to protect them, but it evaporated the instant it touched the chain’s thorns.
Vaelric attempted to collapse the false dimension, but Sylvia’s chains tore straight through reality’s edge.
Sylvia appeared among them, face emotionless. “I’ve wasted enough time on you.”
She raised her right hand, violet light igniting.
“Unification activated.”
For a moment, the world fell silent.
Sylvia’s aura erupted like the death of a star. Her stats skyrocketed, Death Aura thickened until no light could pierce it. The chains vibrated, resonating like the toll of funeral bells.
The six paladins stared in horror for the first time, they weren’t looking at an undead queen, but an entity that transcended life and death itself.
“Now…” Sylvia whispered, “I won’t hold back.”
She took a single step and the air within dozens of meters collapsed. Chains struck Darian and Thalion simultaneously. BOOOOM! Their armor shattered, divine blood spraying across the field.
Eryndor screamed, summoning a wave of blood-water to block but Sylvia’s chains spun like a tornado, shredding it into mist.
“Phantom Bloom!”
Explosions of deathly flowers erupted, engulfing Kaelthas and Lysera. Their bodies exploded into fragments, but even then, the pieces crawled back together regeneration beyond reason.
Sylvia’s expression twisted in disgust.
“Regeneration without souls? That’s not immortality that’s torture.”
She summoned Decay Rain.
Black rain poured from the heavens, each drop disintegrating matter into dust. The paladins half human, half divine endured it, their near-bursting bodies writhing as the downpour ate away at them.
Kaelthas stood amidst the decaying storm, half his body gone.
“All we need… is time… enough time to hold you back…”
Sylvia narrowed her eyes. “So that’s your goal.”
A flicker of realization crossed her mind the faint image of Celes, Aurellia, Alicia, and Stacia fighting on the southern front. They were still holding the line. They were waiting for her.
Sylvia’s face hardened. “You’re trying to delay me.”
There was no answer. But all six paladins smiled together. Divine blood dripped onto the ground, and the symbols of their gods on their chests began to shine.
A sacrificial ritual.
They weren’t merely giving up their souls, they were erasing their very existence to create a seal around the valley, cutting off Void Steps and Soul Chain. Sylvia felt the pressure of immense divine energy pressing in from every direction.
“You dare ”
BOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!
The explosion of light consumed the field. The ground split apart, the air burned, and six massive pillars of holy light shot into the sky.
Sylvia braced herself with chains, though the pressure crushed part of her power. She growled a low sound that shook the earth.
“You want to die together?!”
A thick violet aura engulfed her form.
Chains of Abyss tightened, exploding outward in fury.
“I’ll show you what true death means you won’t reincarnate, you’ll vanish from every dimension!”
Her chains shattered the six pillars, but part of the seal held. Sylvia bled again, her face pale, though her eyes blazed like embers.
“I don’t have time for this…” she said, her voice trembling with rage. “Celes… Aurellia… they’re still fighting.”
She looked at the six paladins half-destroyed yet still standing, their auras unstable, their bodies trembling on the edge of total annihilation.
“Then…” Sylvia raised her hand, the chains whirling violently,
“I’ll finish you now.” The Nether Flame began to gather into a massive sphere of fire, and then Sylvia hurled it forward.
BOOOOOMMMMM!!!
The sky shattered. Violet light swallowed the valley, the screams of the paladins echoing briefly before fading into silence.
And even in their destruction, their divine auras refused to die completely.
The battle wasn’t over.
But one thing was certain Sylvia was no longer holding back.
Far away, beneath the crimson sky, the main battlefield still awaited the return of the Queen of Death.
Death’s dust slowly drifted down from the torn sky, blanketing the valley in a heavy, solemn silence.
Sylvia stood at its center, the black chains around her spinning slowly in the air as if still thirsty for blood.
The six paladins’ bodies were nothing more than glowing charcoal now, yet from their remains, faint traces of holy light still trembled a final prayer refusing to die out.
Sylvia looked at them without emotion. “Even in death, you pray to a god who cannot hear you.”
She closed her eyes for a moment, then turned away.
Violet mist swirled behind her as she whispered softly,
“Alicia… hold on. I’ll be back soon.”
