Chapter 255: Chapter 252 – Fire and Space That Devour the Light
The first explosion shook the earth.
BOOMMM!
A wave of heat blasted outward, tearing through the mist, swallowing the world’s sound in an eruption that split the very air. Fire and white light collided in the heart of the fog, creating blinding flashes that reflected across the skies of Nocture.
Celes leapt forward, her boots striking the slick, cracked stone beneath the weight of raw energy. Her black sword, Void Reaver, quivered faintly, radiating a dark violet glow that swallowed all other colors around it.
“Frontline holds three rows! Vampiric vanguard, don’t let them breach the flank!” she barked without turning.
The synchronized thump of undead footsteps followed
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP.
Hundreds of undead soldiers raised bone shields and rusted blades, forming a dense formation.
Across the field, the Church’s forces emerged from the fog white robes layered over steel armor, the emblem of the sacred eye upon their chests, golden crosses glimmering on the tips of their spears. Holy light flared from the ground beneath their feet.
“Ready positions!” the Church commander shouted.
“For the Divine Light purges this darkness!”
WHOOOOSH!
Hundreds of spears of light shot forth like a meteor shower.
Celes crossed her sword before her chest.
“Dimensional Cut.”
The air froze for a heartbeat then space itself shattered like broken glass. Every spear of light halted midair… before disintegrating into fine dust.
The shockwave rebounded, flinging several holy knights backward. Yet from the haze of that disintegrating brilliance, a stronger, sharper light began to gather.
Aurellia stepped forward, crimson eyes blazing.
“My turn.”
Her spellbook spun before her, pages fluttering open as a circular sigil of blood-red light bloomed behind her.
“Infernal Art: Bloom of Thousand Flames.”
FWOOOOM!
Flowers of fire erupted across the sky, each petal the size of a house. As one blossom opened, the heat melted the earth; as the second bloomed, the air itself turned crimson.
The Church soldiers raised their shields in panicked prayer.
“Blessing of Light! The second layer holds formation!”
CRASHHH!
The wave of heat swept over the frontlines. Holy barriers cracked. Several knights dropped to their knees, their faces blistering even before the fire touched them.
Aurellia snapped her fingers.
“Detonate.”
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
A chain of explosions tore through the battlefield. The hiss of melting metal and the screams of burning men blended into a single chaotic roar.
Celes slashed the air, opening a rift of space before Aurellia to swallow the excess heat.
“Control your aim or you’ll burn our own troops.”
“Relax,” Aurellia replied coolly, though sweat trailed down her temple. “I know the limits of my blast radius.”
The space before them rippled again. From the Church’s side, a new spell formed the Pillar of Grace.
White light descended from the heavens in the shape of a colossal column, striking the battlefield. Within it, a tall priest cloaked in radiant robes stepped forth.
“The sins of flame and space,” he thundered, voice echoing like lightning, “shall be cleansed this day!”
Aurellia scoffed. “Pfft… how cliché.”
Celes narrowed her eyes. “High Priest. Advanced level.”
From the man’s body emanated waves of spiritual pressure so intense that some undead froze in place, their bones fracturing beneath the weight of his light.
Celes stepped forward, lifting her blade.
“Undead formation holds position. I’ll handle the priest.”
Aurellia glanced at her sharply. “Don’t go alone. That much holy energy can distort the space around you.”
Celes turned slightly, a faint smirk curling her lips.
“Then make sure you patch the hole I leave behind.”
She vanished.
SHHH CRACK!
The air folded in on itself, leaving faint fractures behind. In the next instant, Celes reappeared right before the High Priest, sword already descending.
CLANGGG!
Steel met sanctity. The pressure of the clash struck the air like a giant hammer.
The High Priest held firm, golden staff raised, face unmoved.
“The shadows of the underworld cannot defy the light.”
“Your light,” Celes whispered, pressing harder, “is too weak to pierce the darkness that loves death.”
ZRAAAKKK!
Space around them shattered, vomiting shards of black and white energy. Chunks of earth rose, suspended, then crumbled into dust.
Aurellia, watching from afar, moved her hand swiftly, drawing intricate circles in the air.
“Flame Vector – Redirect.”
The wild inferno curved into a controlled spiral around the battlefield, steering away from the undead lines. Several zombies narrowly avoided incineration as the redirected firestorm devoured the Church’s right flank instead.
FWOOM! KRAK!
The roar of flames consumed the Church’s white banner.
A knight screamed, “Protect the holy standard! Don’t let them ”
The next explosion silenced him.
Aurellia flicked her wrist, opening five magic circles at once. Her gaze lifted to the sky now deep violet from Sylvia’s distant power.
“If the sky’s changed color,” she murmured, “then our Queen has allowed us to stop holding back.”
She closed her book; the final page trembled.
“Infernal Code: Third Bloom – Crown of Ash.”
The ground quaked. Fire turned to burning ash, rising to form a massive crown in the air. The crown spun slowly, releasing bursts of embers each time Aurellia moved a finger.
Celes, still in combat, felt the heat. She glanced sideways, parrying a surge of holy light as she raised her left hand.
“Don’t destroy the field too soon.”
Aurellia smirked. “Then move faster, or my crown will burn everything first.”
“As always,” Celes muttered, “you prefer destruction over victory.”
The High Priest roared, the light from his staff blazing brighter.
“Divine Verdict!”
A sword of light descended from the heavens.
Celes twisted her body, swinging upward.
“Spatial Reverse!”
The air flipped inside out. The sword of light reversed direction and fell upon the Church’s own ranks.
BOOOOOMMMM!
The explosion obliterated three entire layers of their formation.
Aurellia laughed sharply. “Ha! Look at that you even made them smite themselves with their own light.”
Celes didn’t reply. Her gaze stayed locked on the staggering High Priest, his face pale. She approached slowly, each step fracturing the air itself as though space rejected her existence.
“I don’t enjoy killing humans,” she said softly, “but you’re too noisy.”
Her sword pierced his chest with a quiet SHHHHK!
The holy light within him went out like a candle in the wind.
A single heartbeat of silence then
KRAAAAKK!
The priest’s body shattered into hundreds of shards of light that dissolved into the air.
Celes exhaled and lowered her blade.
“The center line is clear. Aurellia finish the right flank.”
“With pleasure.”
She snapped her fingers. The crown of ash above spun violently, breaking apart into thousands of burning fragments that rained down like a meteor storm.
TSSSSSHHHHH!
Flames poured from the heavens.
The Church’s soldiers scrambled to raise shields again but too late. The embers fell mercilessly. Armor melted, weapons burned, prayers drowned beneath the hiss of devouring fire.
Within seconds, the entire right flank was a field of smoldering ash.
Aurellia watched her handiwork in silence.
“You know,” she said quietly, “I’ve never liked war. But every time they come waving the name of holiness and call us demons… these hands just refuse to stop.”
Celes sheathed her sword, eyes scanning the flames.
“Because humans only blame the darkness when their light begins to fade.”
Silence fell. Only the crackle of fire and the hiss of blood evaporating filled the air.
From afar, an undead hawk descended, carrying a black banner Sylvia’s signal. Magic rose from the ground, forming glowing letters in the air:
Southern front stable. Maintain pressure. Do not let them retreat. Form a pincer and focus all remaining energy toward the center.
~Sylvia
Celes read the message without emotion.
“Orders received.”
Aurellia smirked faintly. “Seems our Queen really does intend to erase them all.”
“No,” Celes replied flatly. “She intends to end the gods’ old game.”
Both turned westward, toward the remnants of the enemy hundreds of knights still standing, scorched, trembling, yet still praying. The holy light above them flickered, refusing to die.
Aurellia raised her hand. “I could erase them now.”
Celes shook her head slowly. “Let them watch a little longer. I want them to see… what happens when they face death without true faith.”
She stepped forward. One step and the air split. Two steps later the fog scattered.
On the third step, her blade rose.
“Space close.”
SHHHHHH KRAAAK!
A thin violet line cut through the air. Everything it touched stopped moving.
In a heartbeat, hundreds of knights froze like glass statues then shattered all at once.
CRRRRSHHHHH!
White light scattered like snow mixed with blood.
Aurellia watched in silence. Slowly, she lowered her head and closed her book. The flames around her dimmed.
“Western front… complete,” she whispered.
Celes surveyed the now-silent battlefield. Nothing remained but ash, bone, and blackened fragments of holy shields. The wind carried the scent of scorched iron and vanishing flesh.
She took a long breath. “Finally… quiet.”
Aurellia stepped beside her.
“Think they still have reinforcements?”
“They must. But now it’s their turn to wait in fear.”
The sky above them trembled again. Sylvia’s violet light expanded westward, weaving new mist across the battlefield.
Aurellia gazed at that sky with a faint smile.
“The sky cracks, the earth burns, and in the middle of it all… only the Queen remains.”
Celes glanced at her, then back at the field now swallowed by violet fog.
“Yes… the first step has begun.”
WHUUUMMM
A deep, resonant sound echoed across the air, like the heartbeat of the world itself.
The war was far from over
but on the western front, victory was already certain.
