Chapter 257: Feminine Assistance
It was completely dark.

No sound. No pain. No time.

It felt like a heavy, endless void.

Then—

GAAAAAASP

Scott’s chest heaved. His eyes snapped open.

『What the hell happened to me—!?』

Gasp… exhale… gasp.

The first thing he saw wasn’t light. It was her.

A face—so close he could feel her breath.

Wide brown eyes filled his entire view, lashes trembling, lips parted just a few inches away from his own like she’d been leaning in… about to maybe kiss him?

Her wide brown eyes took up his whole view.

The lashes quivered a little.

Her lips stayed parted, only a few inches from his—like she’d been leaning in… maybe about to kiss him?

“AHHHHH!”

Scott screamed.

“AHHHHH!”

Judy screamed back at the exact same pitch.

They both jolted in opposite directions.

Scott shot backward into the pillow and Judy nearly fell off the edge of the bed.

For a second, it was just awkward silence and the sound of two hearts panicking.

Scott blinked, dazed.

“Wh-, What the hell—?!”

Judy’s cheeks flushed red instantly.

She sat at the edge of the bed as she frantically fixed her hair and stared at literally anywhere else.

“I—I wasn’t doing anything weird, okay?! I just—uh—I was just checking if you were breathing!”

She said quickly, twirling a strand of her hair nervously.

『Why did I lean in that close?! Why couldn’t I just check his pulse like a normal person?! Now he probably thinks I’m some shameless perv who wanted to kiss him in his sleep or something! Ahhh, stupid! STUPID!』

She was losing her mind inside.

But then—

“Thank you…” Scott muttered quietly.

Judy blinked, surprised. “Huh?”

“For saving me…”

He looked up at her with a smile.

“If it wasn’t for you, I’d probably be dead by now.”

Judy was stunned.

He didn’t even mention what just happened.

Her fingers fidgeted with the ends of her hair.

“Oh—uh… no problem.”

Scott tried to sit up properly. “I need to—”

“Hey, hey, hey, don’t!”

Judy panicked and pressed his shoulder down gently.

“You haven’t even recovered yet. You need to rest.”

Scott shook his head firmly. “No. Cobra was right.”

Judy’s eyes widened. “What?”

He clenched his jaw.

“He was right. I can’t be calm while they’re out there. I can’t sit here like some pampered prince while the women I care about are being held by that monster. I’m always the one on the receiving end, I can’t continue to act like some dumb reactive hero!”

His breathing quickened.

Panic spread throughout his tone.

“What if they’re hurt? What if—what if they’re—”

“Mister Nightwatch!”

Judy’s voice broke through his frantic haze.

“That’s not the way to go about it!”

He looked at her, angry and confused.

“You don’t under—”

“I DO!”

Judy shouted back.

“Maybe Cobra’s just trying to get in your head. Or what if he wants you to panic and lose focus. If you rush in now, you’ll die—do you get that? You’ll die.”

Scott’s frustration boiled over.

He slammed his fist against the bed.

“It’s better to die than sit around doing nothing while the women I love are taken!”

Judy didn’t know what to say.

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Her feelings wouldn’t let her give the right answer.

Her eyes lowered.

A small, sad smile formed across her face.

『Of course there’s someone he loves.』

She shook her head quickly.

『No. That’s not why I helped him.』

She stared at her twitching fingers.

『I brought him here because he’s a hero.』

Not because she was attracted to him.

Judy straightened a little.

“Mister Nightwatch…”

Her voice was pillow-soft and oddly charming.

“You’re a good hero. But more than that—you’re a good person. That’s why people care about you. That’s why no corporate-made hero will ever have your kind of respect.”

Scott exhaled as he shook his head.

“I really don’t have time for speeches right now—”

Before he could finish, Judy grabbed his shoulder.

Even with her soft hands her grip felt firm.

He froze as she leaned in close.

“Everybody thinks they’re a good person until life actually tests them. Honesty is easy when lying costs nothing. Loyalty is easy when there’s no temptation. Kindness is easy when the world’s kind to you.”

She pulled him even closer until their noses touched.

“You can’t be the type of hero whose morality depends on circumstances. True morality’s proven when it hurts… when doing the right thing costs you everything.”

Scott had no comeback for that.

He just stared at her.

The words hit deep—so deep they left him silent.

Finally, he sighed.

“Guess… you’re right.”

“Of course! I’m Judy Cho after all!” (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

“Heh. Fair enough…”

When he replied, pain flared across his jaw.

His face was still swollen so every word hurt like hell.

Judy noticed instantly.

“You’re still in pain!”

She scrambled to her feet.

“Wait, I’ll get the first-aid kit!”

She darted around her apartment as she frantically checked drawers and shelves.

“Where did I put it—? God, I’m so careless! This is not the time to be stupid! What if he’s bleeding internally?! Or he dies from something stupid like that—”

Scott groaned and sat up weakly.

Then a gentle hand touched her shoulder.

“Hey, hey…”

He said slowly and softly.

“You don’t have to worry so much.”

She turned around—and immediately froze up.

Scott was standing there.

Bare-chested. Bandages half-torn.

But it wasn’t his hardened chest or rock-hard abs that left her jaw loose.

It was the snake between his legs.

Something long… was definitely dangling.

It was girthy enough to make any woman blush.

Judy blinked once. Then twice. (⊙_⊙)

“Well… that’s quite the… equipment.”

Scott’s eyes went wide.

“Wha—!? H-, HEY!”

He quickly yanked the bedsheet around himself.

“Did you—did you take my armor off?!”

Judy kept her eyes suspiciously level. “Maybe.”

“That’s not funny!”

“It wasn’t supposed to be.”

An impish grin tugged at her lips.

Before their banter could go any further—

A smooth voice spoke from the doorway.

“I was the one who took it off, actually.”

They both looked.

It was Vixen leaning casually against the wall.

She smiled at him with her sly, half-lidded fox eyes.

Scott blinked.

“Vixen—? How—when did you—?”

She smiled elegantly as she gave her shining claws a slow, sassy once-over.

“I saw the news and came straight here.”

She felt so proud of herself.

“The things I do for you…” ╮( ˘ 、 ˘ )╭

Before he could say another word—

Knock, knock.

A soft voice came from the hallway.

“Um… Scott? Are you decent?”

That voice. He’d know it anywhere.

His heart nearly stopped.

“Fortress?”

There was a pause. Then a nervous squeak.

“I—I uhm… I just wanted to check if you’re okay but I don’t want to walk in on you naked! You’ve already seen me naked, so if I see you naked, it’s kinda like we’re taking turns! And that’s basically—oh god—that’s basically sex! This is so awkward!”

Scott just blinked.

“What…?”

He looked at Vixen and Judy.

They both had the same reaction. ╮( ˘_˘ )╭

Lady Fortress kept rambling.

“I mean, not that I want to see you naked… I’m not saying your body is weird, I’m sure you have a strong body and your privates are tempting… it’s just… I don’t want to make it weird… but it’s already weird…”

She covered her tomato-red face in shame.

“Oh no this is weirder…”

Her voice came out like a whining squeak.

Scott couldn’t help it. He laughed.

A low, broken laugh that actually hurt his ribs, but he couldn’t stop.

Vixen folded her arms, unimpressed.

Her golden eyes narrowed at the doorway.

『When I got here, Lady Fortress and this reporter chick were already by his side. I wanted to be the one to reach him first. To help him first.』

Her fluffy tail flicked irritably.

『But I was a step behind. Again.』

She eyed the door with so much contempt.

『I can’t stand how fake she is. On camera she’s all ruthless and stoic—this cold-hearted warrior from another planet who never smiles. But the second she’s around him… she turns into some shy, sweet girl.』

She clicked her tongue loudly.

『Tch, shameless tactic.』 (눈_눈)

Scott rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.

“Guess the whole gang’s here, huh?”

Vixen just gave him a look.

“Oh, we’re definitely going to talk about that later.”

Judy sighed and covered her face.

“Yeah. After I find pants for you, maybe.”

Scott looked down at himself.

“Uh, righ—”

Judy interrupted him with a slap and grip on the butt then walked away.

“Nice penis, Mister Vigilante~” („¬ᴗ¬„)

“Yeah, whatever…”

Scott quietly looked away. (ー_ー゛)

Some moments later…

Countless holographic panels were all on display.

There were maps, data strings, faces, and profiles.

Lady Fortress stood in the center with arms crossed over her flat chest and pink lips pressed tight.

She swiped through layers of data.

The high-tech monitors were projecting a sprawling 3D map of the South District — the entire industrial grid glowed in translucent blue light.

Red dots scattered across the map like infected cells.

『Where did he spawn all this tech from…』

If she remembered correctly Scott didn’t have anything on him when she flew him here.

To the left, an enlarged holographic profile of King Cobra rotated slowly.

[Name: Osamu Adeleke]

[Alias: King Cobra]

[Age: 34]

[Nationality: Benin Republic]

[Notable Kills: 47 confirmed]

They were mostly corporate execs, military officials, and five registered meta-humans.

[Abilities: Venom assimilation, cellular regeneration, super strength, and neurotoxic secretion]

[Origin: Ritual exposure to the great spiritual essence of Dahomey’s Snake Deity in the city of Ouidah, known for its ancient voodoo lineage.]

[Supplement: Cobra Serum Type-Z]

It was a mutagenic enhancer injected into the body.

That would explain why his veins were glowing like that.

“He seems dangerous…”

Lady Fortress murmured quietly.

Her calm, composed face reflected in the hologram.

“But I’ve never heard of him before.”

Vixen leaned against a console.

Her tail flicked lazily as she smirked.

“Because you’re too busy shooting dumb ads and smiling on dumb talk shows.”

Fortress blinked. “Excuse me?” (O.O)

“Don’t ‘excuse me’ me, Miss Public Image!”

Vixen said irritatedly then rolled her eyes.

“Half the time you’re shaking hands with politicians or reading cue cards on talk shows.”

Fortress didn’t even flinch.

Actually, she wasn’t even offended.

She could never really tell when someone was angry at her or offended by what she said.

“Those are necessary. They help me form good relations with the people of this planet.”

Vixen arched an eyebrow.

“Yeah. Like I said — dumb things.”

Fortress nodded at her with a very gentle smile.

『I did well…』 (o˘◡˘o)

Fortress thought proudly to herself.

『I communicated my purpose clearly.』

But Vixen was still giving her the stink-eye.

『Why does she look so mad, though…?』 (⊙.⊙)?

Vixen turned away before her patience imploded.

“You’re SO annoying.”

She walked over to Judy’s corner.

“Alright, reporter girl, what’s your board of weird look like this time?”

Judy didn’t even glance at her.

She was in full investigative mode.

Her wall was plastered with printouts, strings, and snapshots of faces like—

Trickshot, King Cobra, Kaede Kazama, and Grave.

But at the bottom of the board were two faces that looked very out of place.

Cat Lady and Isaac Volkner.

Vixen tilted her head. “What’s with those two?”

Judy turned, marker in hand.

“Oh, those two? I suddenly remember reporting on Cat Lady a few months ago. She stole a lot of Mutagenium from AETHER Labs — nasty, expensive stuff. But here’s where it gets interesting…”

She underlined Isaac’s photo with a sharp stroke.

“According to a close friend of mine who’s big in the science field, Volkner Industries is the only company with the centrifuge capable of processing Mutagenium. So that reminded me of something.”

She grabbed a remote and pulled up a clip — a freeze frame from one of Nightwatch’s streams that showed masked intruders inside Volkner Labs.

“This. Last month, Nightwatch stopped a break-in at a facility under Volkner Industries.”

Vixen yawned. “Okay, so what are you saying?”

Judy smirked and theatrically drew a red circle around Isaac’s photo.

“I’m saying he wanted that break-in.”

Vixen blinked. “Wait—what?”

“Think about it…”

Judy paced as she gestured animatedly.

“Isaac’s not some dumb executive. He’s a billionaire genius with an army of private security. You really think he wouldn’t know Mutagenium got stolen and that one of his facilities would be next? He knew. And he let it happen.”

Vixen’s eyes widened a little.

“So you’re saying…”

“He wanted them to take the centrifuge?”

“Oh no…”

“Exactly.”

For the first time, Vixen actually looked impressed.

She leaned in closer with a sharp grin.

“Oh… you’re good. You’re really good.”

Judy smirked and spun the marker in her hand.

“I know.”

Lady Fortress, who’d been quietly observing, suddenly spoke up.

“I’m not sure that’s it. Because Isaac is—”

She stopped herself immediately.

Her lips tightened.

Judy narrowed her eyes. “Because Isaac is… what?”

Fortress laughed awkwardly. “Nevermind.” (¯▿¯)

“No, no, no. Don’t you dare nevermind me!”

Judy pressed, pointing her marker like a weapon.

“You were definitely about to say something big.”

She poked Fortress enough to tickle her.

“Tee-hee! Stop that—it’s kahaha!”

“Spill it.” (ꐦ ಠ皿ಠ )

Fortress turned away. “It’s classified.”

“Oh, don’t give me that!”

Judy leaned in closer and shouted like an addict.

“You know something! You so know something!”

Fortress laughed nervously again.

“I don’t! Really, I—haha—”

Then Judy froze mid-sentence.

Her eyes widened when it finally hit her.

“Wait… what if Isaac is actually a pro hero?!”

Fortress blinked.

“Wha—no, that’s absurd.” (⁄ ⁄>⁄ ▽ ⁄<⁄ ⁄)

Her voice cracked a little.

Judy’s grin spread wickedly.

“No use hiding it now! That’s why you didn’t want to say anything, isn’t it?”

Fortress’ lips tightened again.

Then she sighed and muttered under her breath—

“Damn… you’re good. Really good.”

Judy chuckled proudly. “Heh. I know.”

That’s when the door slid open.

Everyone turned.

Scott walked in as he stretched his arms.

His body was unbandaged, his face was smooth, not a single scar or bruise left.

He wore a black-and-blue fleece jacket over a loose white tee and denim pants.

The holographic lights reflected in his eyes.

He looked serious.

“We can’t waste time focusing on Volkner. What matters right now is saving the hostages and stopping Grave once and for all.”

The girls all stared.

Vixen blinked. “Whoa, hold up.”

Fortress’s eyes widened as her cheeks reddened.

“Your face… it’s—”

Vixen tilted her head.

“How’d it heal so fast? Before I couldn’t even recognize you and now… well… this.”

Scott blinked.

『I can’t tell them about the System…』

He wore a mild smile.

“That’s really not important…”

Fortress looked away quickly and unconvincingly acted like she was studying a screen.

But her mind was far from composed.

『I didn’t even see him naked and yet I’m picturing his wang hanging out! This is so inappropriate.』

Her face flushed redder. (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)

Vixen noticed, of course.

She clicked her tongue quietly.

『Tch. Acting all innocent again, huh…』

It ate her on the inside.

She didn’t want to lose her chances of getting closer to Scott because of this blonde girl scout.

『Miss Perfect Hero my ass…』

Meanwhile Judy just stood there, completely stunned.

Her mind spun as she stared at him.

『Wait. Wait. WAIT.』

Then reveal almost struck her down like lightning.

“YOU—!”

She shrieked and pointed at him.

“You’re HIM! Scott McQueen is Nightwatch!”

Scott froze.

Before she could say another word—

“SHHHHHHHHHH!”

Vixen, Fortress, and Scott all slapped their hands over her mouth at the same time.

The trio exchanged frantic looks.

“Judy…” Scott hissed. “Quiet!”

“Mmmf—mrrph!”

Vixen sighed and pulled her hand away first.

“Jeez, reporter girl, ever heard of an inside voice?”

Judy stepped back, eyes wide and hands up.

“Sorry! Sorry! I’m just— I mean—wow. Think of this from a civilian’s perspective. The Nightwatch! And Lady Fortress! Working together!”

She threw her arms out.

“This is like—like my career highlight!”

Vixen frowned a little. “Heyy, what about me?”

“Come on, Vixen… come on…”

“Fair enough.” (ー_ー゛)

Judy straightened her blouse, trying to act composed.

“Okay, okay. I’ll behave.”

Scott exhaled. “Good.”

He turned back to the hologram with a stern look.

“Because I’ve got their location.”

Fortress blinked. “Already? How?”

“When Cobra was pounding my face in, I managed to slip a tracker on him. It just registered.”

He pointed to the holographic map.

A blinking dot zoomed in on an old building labeled IRON MILLS FACTORY — an abandoned industrial site at the far edge of the South District.

“Right there…”

Scott said chewed on his pen.

“That’s where Grave’s keeping them.”

The entire team crowded around the projection.

Judy pulled up thermal imaging data.

A red heat signature overlay lit up the factory with clusters of dots.

A startled Vixen tilted her head.

“Damn… he’s got a whole army in there.”

“About forty-seven heat signatures…” Judy said.

Fortress nodded. “Maybe more underground.”

Vixen grinned and patted Lady Fortress on the back.

“We don’t need strategy. Fortress can take out Cobra and half those grunts herself.”

The smallish blonde shook her head like a teacher when you got something wrong in class.

“Underestimating opponents leads to failure. I think it’s safer if we verify every entry point.”

Vixen rolled her eyes for the hundredth time today.

“Oh, sure. Why don’t you write that on a fortune cookie while you’re at it.”

That was why she didn’t like high-profile heroes.

They couldn’t take a joke or a compliment.

They’d rather school you instead.

Fortress blinked.

“I don’t understand. I’m not a baker.”

Vixen’s eye twitched.

『I swear she’s doing this on purpose.』

Scott exhaled through a grin.

“Alright, girls, focus.”

He swiped across the hologram.

“The drone I sent earlier’s still transmitting.”

He pointed at one dot.

“Grave’s at the main control room…”

He pointed at another.

“King Cobra is near the upper mezzanine.”

He zoomed in closer.

“We’ll go in silent. Vixen handles outer perimeter and recon. Fortress, you’ll have to draw King Cobra away from the main floor. Judy, you’ll stay here and maintain comms to guide us with thermal updates.”

Judy saluted dramatically.

“Copy that, Mister Vigilante.”

Scott couldn’t help a small smile.

A team of beautiful women didn’t sound so bad.
