88: Pesky little mate bond.

88: Pesky little mate bond.

Leilani.

I watched Kael struggle for words, and to be frank, it was the funniest shit I’ve seen today.

He opened his mouth and closed it… and then did it all over again like a drowning fish, his face now stained a bright shade of red.

I folded my arms across my chest, glaring at him, and when he still wouldn’t speak, I drawled; “I guess we’re done here then.

I think you should take your leave no-” “Wait, Leilani!” He called out quickly, but I didn’t miss the way he blinked at Maya in confusion.

His eyes darted between both of us for a millisecond and then he continued; “We’re not done.” “What else is there to talk about?” I snapped, “…you just said you’re sorry for ‘almost killing me’.

What else?

Were you expecting that I’ll jump to forgive you.

After everything?

After the shit you all have put me through?” He lowered his head, his voice dropping into a whisper as he drawled; “But what else can I say besides sorry?” “Maybe you should try leaving me the fuck alone for a start.” That made Kael pause.

He turned to look behind me again and then turned back to me, his voice soft… hoarse.

He drawled; “You know I’d never do something like that if it wasn’t for the fact that you kept targeting Chalice.

And while I’m here now to seek your forgiveness, I also want to ask that you let her be too.

That you stop targeting her.

None of what happened is her fault.” If I was pissed before, then now, I was fully mad.

My blood rushed in my ears and to put as much distance as I could between us, I took a step back.

“You didn’t just say that.

Did you?” “Leilani…?” “You know what, I’ll tell you this now, but only now.

I’ll never repeat myself again.

Go home, talk to Chalice.

Ask her to stop targeting me.

Ask her to tell you the truth about everything, and tell her I said I no longer wish to have anything to do with you all, that she has you all to herself, and she should leave me be.

Okay?” He frowned in disbelief… or was that hurt.

And then muttered; “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.” “Oh, you wouldn’t.

You’ve been lied to for so long, so you wouldn’t.” I snapped.

“But say that to Chalice and she would understand.

Trust me.” He looked like he had more questions to ask.

Like he had more things to say to me.

He opened his mouth slowly, stared at me for a long time and then shook his head.

“I’ll do that.” “Good.

Also make sure to inform her that I’m not dropping the case.

If she wouldn’t take me to court, I will.

This nonsense needs to end once and for all.”  And as soon as I said that, he froze.

His eyes thinned into fierce slits, and just like that, stupid Kael was back into play.

He growled; “You can’t be serious!” I smirked.

“I am dead serious.” “Do you know what that will do to you?” He yelled, grabbing my arm forcefully.

“Do you know what it’ll do to your reputation?” For a minute, I swear I couldn’t believe my ears.

My blood rushed into my ears, my heart fluttered like a crazed bird in a cage.

Even my breath came out in short harsh pants and goddess, I felt frozen in place.

Is Kael… Kael Stormborn worried about what a court case will do to my reputation or has he been struck in the head?

His anger should be what it would do to Chalice, not me!

What the hell happened to him?

My heart raced when his hand holding my arm loosened.

But he didn’t let go.

Instead, he began to trace slow circles along my arm, his breath fanning my face as he whispered; “Chalice isn’t willing to take you to court because she knows that the evidence against you is damning.

She cares.

She doesn’t want you to rot in jail… hell, I think I don’t either.

So let it go.” The laugh that wrenched free from my chest was loud and dark.

It tore out from the deepest parts of my soul, squeezing all the way through as tears slipped out of my eyes.

I took another step back to clear my head of the haze that was his sweet masculine scent mixed with a hint of blueberries and pine.

And I scoffed; “I don’t care what she has against me, and I don’t care how long you guys will try to stop the court from taking up this case.

But even if it’s in a million years, I’ll take you all to court… starting with my family, then you three.

And I’ll top it off with Chalice.” “Leilani…” “Now, get out!” “Leilani…” “Leilani?” Another voice called from behind Kael, causing me to still for a second.

And then… “Alpha Kael?” My breath hitched when a familiar mane of auburn hair came into view.

It was Gavin.

I rolled my eyes.

What the hell is he doing here?

Rage coiled in my guts when he strode words us like he owned the place, his eyes occasionally darting between I and Kael suspiciously.  When he came to stand beside us, he asked; “What’s happening here?” I frowned at him.

“What are you doing here?” “I came to talk to you.” He answered with a shrug, and then turning to Kael, he asked; “And you?” “I came to talk to Leilani too.” However, seeing both of them like this, standing above me with prideful expressions on their faces, filled me with more disgust than confusion.

Their faces brought back memories I tried to forget, and the sneer on Gavin’s face- even though subtle- reminded me of all the times he’d hit me with that smug smile on his face.

I sighed and shook my head to dispel those heartbreaking memories, my voice coming out steady- way too steady for someone about to have a mental breakdown- as I drawled; “Well, you’re both here now and I do not wish to talk to any of you.

However, there’s a bright side, you can both talk to each other while you rot away on my porch.

Have a nice day!” I said, and with that, turned to return back into the house.

However, I’d just taken a step forward when Gavin’s voice called out.

He snarled; “I’m not here to talk about whatever you think I’m here for.

I know your hatred for Chalice would never allow you to grant her that job so I wouldn’t waste my time talking to you about it.

I just want to know about my mate.” Hearing that, I froze.

Even Kael too looked like he couldn’t quite believe his eyes.

He turned to Gavin so fast, it nearly made my head spin.

He rasped; “Your mate?” “Yes, my mate.” God, I didn’t want to respond.

I didn’t want to say shit to him and do something respectable by simply going into the house.

But I was far from respectable.

I turned around and smirked at him.

“You remember how four years ago, you told me that the mate bond was some pesky thing, and that it isn’t enough reason to come between Chalice and, you know, them?” I drawled, causing his eyes to widen as realization set in.

“Yes?” “Well, you see… My friend has a relationship going on at the moment, so to that effect, I’ll throw your advice back at you.

You shouldn’t come between her and her spouse because of some pesky little mate bond.” His face fell.

He yelled; “You-” But before he could finish the words, I walked into the house and slammed the door shut, blocking out whatever he had to say.

And goddess, I didn’t feel the least bad about it.
