- Chapter 51 - 51 Newsflash
51: Newsflash.
51: Newsflash.
Leilani.
I woke up to a strange sight.
I was on my bed, in my room, under my duvet with a bottle of painkillers on my bedside table and a note reading; ‘I hope you’re better by the time you wake up.
I’ll come visiting later today to see you.’ I frowned.
“Who the hell is this?
And why am I in my room when I could remember fainting at the door last night?” I slowly rose to my feet, wincing against the searing headache at the back of my skull.
My throat felt dry, my lips were chapped, so I quickly made my way downstairs to the kitchen.
However, I had just helped myself to a glass of water when suddenly, strange images began to flash across my mind like pages from a destroyed book.
Images of things I’d seen, things I’d done… but I couldn’t remember doing any of those.
I could see myself running through the woods, the earth underneath my feet, the smell of grass in my nose.
The wind had been in my face, my hair flowing with the air like a silver curtain behind my head.
The moon had been overhead, playing a game of hide and seek behind large stormy clouds, its silvery rays bearing down on me like shadows of my hair.
And it all felt… oddly strange but familiar.
Very very familiar.
The glass of water slipped out of my hands before I could stop it, crashing against the floor with a loud deafening bang.
But I wasn’t stirred by it.
Instead, I looked down at my hands, inspecting my palms and realizing to my utmost shock that my scars from yesterday were gone.
The several fresh scars I’d obtained from tearing through the bouquet of roses like a mad woman had disappeared, and in the place of the large cuts I’d gotten was a smooth creamy skin.
Skin that looked like it had never been touched before.
Skin that looked beautiful- too beautiful.
A gasp slipped past my lips and I rushed upstairs in a daze to my vanity mirror.
I then peeked into it to stare at my reflection, but strangely, I looked normal.
I looked fine. There was nothing wrong with me.
There were no voices in my head talking to me like the way I’d heard of people’s wolves talking to them.
So what the fuck happened to me?
Rinsing my face under the faucet, I went back downstairs only to freeze mid motion when the doorbell suddenly rang.
But I wasn’t expecting anyone.
‘I hope you’re better by the time you wake up.
I’ll come visiting later today to see you.’ The words from the letter earlier flashed across my mind and I gulped, walking shakily towards the door.
When I finally pulled it open, I nearly tumbled to the floor when I came face to face with… “Zevran?” “Last time we met, you called me ‘stupid’.” He answered with a smile, winking at me as he lifted a decorated hamper containing some fruits and chocolates up to his head, as if like a peace offering.
The words immediately died in my throat.
I rapidly blinked up at him in surprise and maybe… just maybe annoyance.
“What the hell are you doing here?” “Didn’t you see my letter?” He asked innocently, and for a moment, I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole.
I wanted to disappear from the surface of the earth, never to be seen again. Because my saviour, the person who had helped me up to my room last night was… Zevran?
Of all people… out of all my neighbors and delivery people; Zevran?!
Oh, fuck me!
I rolled my eyes.
“That isn’t the question I asked you.
What are you doing here?” “I came to see you.” He answered softly- too softly, and I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes.
“You weren’t so good last night so I decided that I have to come see you today to be sure you’re better…” I frowned, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Huh?” At that, Zevran sighed.
Maybe it was frustration, maybe it was something else but he stopped to drop the hamper on the floor in front of me.
His expression was a mixture of frustration and anger as he drawled; “Last night, I felt bad for what happened at the restaurant so I followed you home, only to find you sprawled on the floor, barely breathing and… and…” he trailed off, shaking his head as if to dispel the thought.
“And are you here to hear me say thank you?” I butted in, looking up to meet his brooding gaze with a steely one of mine.
“If so, then thank you.” I added sarcastically; “Now, you can leave.” For a moment, Zevran simply stood there as if in a daze, and then his composure cracked.
His expression morphed from one of utter calm into one of frustration… of confusion, and then… regret.
He sighed; “Leilani, is it bad if I only just want to see you?
To know how you’re faring?” That stunned me.
I looked up at him as if seeing him for the first time, the ghost of a smile playing on my lips.
But when I remembered the years of torture, of neglect, and of tears that I’d suffered in their hands, my smile faded.
I frowned.
“I don’t want it.” “Leila-” “Do your brothers know you’re here?
Does Chalice know that you’ve been sneaking around my house these past few weeks?” His eyes widened infinitesimally before he dropped his gaze.
His tone was flat.
Cold.
Emotionless.
He spat; “No.” “Then you should better run along before she finds out and accuses me of trying to seduce one of you.” I responded sarcastically, not missing the way his eyes darkened.
Or the way he had now pushed so close, he was literally standing in my face.
And then he dropped the bombshell: “I know you never seduced Caelum.” Those words echoed like a bell at the back of my skull.
It made angry tears burn at the corners of my eyes.
Made my heart begin to beat erratically against my ribcage.
The day I’d been slutshamed, accused of seducing Caelum because I was against Chalice’s happiness, I’d wanted someone to come to my aid.
I had half expected Caelum to tell the truth… and maybe that day, I’d have been satisfied if Zevran had uttered these words.
But he didn’t.
What’s with them and doing things too late?
Why were they all suddenly trying to right their wrongs after over a decade of abuse?
I looked up to him with tears blurring my vision and snapped; “News flash: I do not care any more!” An emotion akin to frustration fleeted across his face before he quickly pulled up his usual indifferent mask.
His fingers brushed against the curve of my chin, his eyes boring into mine as he whispered; “I know.” I gritted my teeth.
“Step back.” But he didn’t listen to me.
If anything, he even pushed himself closer to me.
His warmth burned through the fabric of my blouse, igniting me with a kind of fiery spark that I’d rather die than admit to feel.
He bent his head just low enough that his breath now fanned the top of my head and nose.
And then he drawled; “I want to make it up to you.” I froze for a moment, my eyes slipping close against my better judgment.
“I don’t want it.” “I want you to come back to the pack please… we can right our wrongs.
We can help you.” His words annoyed me rather than console me.
I planted my hands on his chest and with as much strength as I could muster, I pushed him off of me.
Usually, as a runt, every werewolf was stronger than me.
I had no strength to push anyone off, especially not an Alpha wolf like Zevran.
However, that was not the case as my push ended up sending him flying several feet away from me.
My eyes widened.
Even Zevran looked like he’d just seen a ghost.
My hands trembled in both surprise and confusion.
I backed away slowly, my heart racing in my chest.
“Stay away from me!” I spat with conviction.
“Do not come here ever again.
I don’t want to ever see you lurking around my house and if you do, I’ll save the footage and send it off to Chalice!” “Is that supposed to scare me?” Zevran muttered, whilst slowly pushing himself to his feet and wiping the dust off his clothes.
“You think I give a shit if you send it to Chalice or not?” “I’ll send it to your brothers too.
Wonder what they’ll think when they realize you’ve been frolicking with the enemy!” I spat back.
“That’s crazy…” “What’s crazy is you coming here!
What is crazy is the fact that you-” I began to say before Zevran flashed me a grin, but before I could decipher what it meant, he cupped my face in his hands and slammed his lips against mine, shutting me right up.
Causing the words to immediately die in my throat.
Oh, how I hate him.
And how I hate hate the way my body instantly melted into his arms.
