Chapter 193: The bodyguard.
Chalice.
Today is my fifth day of being locked up in this godforsaken dungeon and ever since yesterday when a pretty young soldier came to feed me nothing but some pieces of dried meat and some weird tasting water, I have not been fed anything else.
I haven’t even seen another soul, and Zevran, my heartless husband who had promised to come on my fifth day, still hasn’t shown up yet.
My hands were stiff, raw and bloody from being clasped behind my back for so long with silver chains and every other part of my body had gone numb from being in so much pain for many days now without care.
My aching stomach had long since stopped aching but that didn’t dispel the panic surging through me and the fear that the only hold I had over the triplets— my child— may have been lost.
Goddess, please save the child. Help it… Do not allow me to lose to Leilani like this!
Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably and I do not know for how long I sat there listening to the sound of water droplets dropping from the spot in the leaking ceiling which has been my only hobby these past few days; But then to my utmost surprise, the metal doors suddenly creaked open and a dark silhouette stepped in.
For a moment, my heart began to race in fear, but that is until I caught a whiff of the visitor’s scent. And as soon as I did, my stomach rumbled and my eyes, once heavy, snapped open with glee. I rasped; “Kael? Zevran?”
“Caelum.” The person hissed back and I froze for a nanosecond before an inexplicable amount of relief surged through my veins.
“Caelum?” I called back slowly, half thinking that this was a prank of some sort. On the other hand, I feared that I was probably finally going crazy, and that this was my own way of coping with the isolation.
“Turn on the lights.” The person said and this time, from the way the voice washed over me, I instinctively knew then that I wasn’t hallucinating. That this was indeed Caelum, and my thoughts soon came to fruition when the lights were suddenly turned on and a person I never hoped I would see today stood in front of me with his hands buried deep into his pockets.
Behind him, his two brothers stood, glaring at me with open contempt. Something about the looks in their eyes had my breath hitching and my body going stiff. Goosebumps sprouted all over my skin but I shook it off and tilted my head up to meet their dark gazes, squinting when the lights seeped into my eyes.
I smiled. “You guys finally came for me?”
I hope they did. Goddess, I really hoped they did.
My eye snagged at Caelum’s again, and it wasn’t until that moment that I realized how slimmer he looked. How deep his eyes now seemed… and how he was hunched over slightly, his brows twisting in pain whenever he tried to move.
—And that was all Leilani’s doing.
This was all her!
“Have you thought about the answer to the question I last asked you?” Zevran’s voice snapped me out of my reverie, and for a moment, I contemplated ignoring him.
I contemplated spreading my legs instead to give them a clear view of what they’ve been missing out on; But upon the realization that I was too filthy right now to catch their attention, I pressed my knees together, lifted my eyes once again and muttered;
“Yes.”
“And your answer now is…?” He drawled, his voice sending chills down my spine— not because I was scared or anything, but because I was horny.
And I shouldn’t be horny.
Forcing tears into my eyes, I dropped my gaze and said in a feigned shaky voice, my tone soft and pitiful as I muttered; “I really do not know anything besides what I told you.”
“Which is?”
“I do not know if you guys were really responsible for Jennifer’s rape and death. I have no idea what must’ve transpired between you all… but I know that Leilani told my parents and some elders that you three were responsible. She said you had bullied her for months nonstop and when a DNA test was carried out to find out who the owners of the semen found in her corpse was, it was traced back to you three and everyone then began to put two and two together.”
The room went still and dead silent as soon as I poured out my well crafted lie. Gosh, there was a reason I have been practicing it for days now.
Zevran looked at me one more time with confusion and suspicion lacing his features, and after a while, he turned to his brothers and said loud enough that I could hear, his voice dripping with disdain and something else that sent chills down my spine as he snarled; “I think she’s lying.”
“But I am not!” I cried, forcing myself to sound hurt and betrayed.
However, what he said next had me snapping my lips shut. It made my heart flutter in my chest. He said; “But for the sake of the child, I think she needs to see a doctor.”
“I think so too.” Caelum added but he wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at something over my head, his face twisted into a deep frown as he seethed; “…can we ask the doctor to treat her here?”
And goddess, those words riled me up to no end! Those words made me see red and made my body tremble until I feared I would convulse.
I opened my mouth and yelled; “If you were treated in a place like this when you were shot, would you recover?!” before I could help myself, and I saw the embarrassment stain his face a bright pink before he turned away.
Kael was the last to speak, and I couldn’t help but wonder how the man who used to dote on me like I was his entire world now couldn’t bring himself to look at me anymore…
—But not for long.
Let me get the hell out of here first.
His eyes roved my filthy body slowly and I had this urge to hide away. To bury myself alive. He said; “We can’t treat her here. The doctors will want to know why she is locked up in a dungeon… and someone might find out…”
“And we can’t let that happen.” Caelum added,
“…especially with Micah and Uncle Damien around.” Zevran finished.
My heart leaped with joy when I heard those words, and I was even happier when a guard was asked to unclasp the chains around my wrists and ankles.
However, as soon as they finished, another entity slipped into the room and my breath hitched when I was met with the familiar dark eyes belonging to… Louis.
I froze.
“His brother is quite indisposed at the moment so he would have to be your bodyguard until it’s time for you to return to your cells.” Kael informed me.
“He would follow you around every time to watch over you and you’re to respect him at all times.” Zevran added, but I didn’t know whether to be scared or grateful.
I didn’t know whether to smile or not; because as much as I liked the turn of events, I couldn’t help but fear that this must be some sort of trap… I couldn’t help but think that this was some twisted way for them to test me.
And I wouldn’t allow it.
“Merry Christmas.” Lou said slowly, snapping me out of my reverie, whilst bowing slightly at me and I rolled my eyes in annoyance before snorting;
“It’s not Christmas until tomorrow… and you three, I do not wish to have a bodyguard!”
