Chapter 142: Couldn’t live with that.
Zevran.

“SECURITY!”

The words sounded like a blow to my guts. I recoiled as if struck and turned to my brothers who also had bewildered expressions on their faces .

Goddess, this sick idea had all been Caelum’s. I had warned him profusely about how insane it would be to simply take gifts to Leilani when she doesn’t even want to have anything with us.

—that and the fact that she’d recently sued us to court.

But he’d been adamant.

In his words; “All women love gifts!” And apparently, Leilani was an exception. She was always an exception!

I had seen the horror in her eyes when she stepped into her office to find us in it… not just us but the several gifts we’d spent several hours pulling together as well. And I knew then and there that we’d crossed our boundaries again.

Gosh, we cannot seem to do anything right with her!

I was snapped out of these depressing thoughts when the door opened up seconds later and two burly men stepped in. Behind them was Leilani… and goddess, she was beautiful!

Too beautiful.

The way her beautiful silver hair cascaded down her slim body and her skin radiated brightly under the light made me want to swear that she was created on a sabbath day, probably on the moon goddess’s birthday as well.

My chest felt tight at the sight of her, and for a minute, I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. I simply was transfixed by her beauty, I was captivated by the ethereal greatness that was her presence.

Geez, I almost sound like Shakespeare right now…

She spat, and her words brought me back to the present; “They’re Alphas, John, so don’t lay your hands on them, they can beat you up, but help them out of my office. And make sure they take their gifts along.”

One of the security officers turned to her with eyes so wide, I nearly laughed. He didn’t need to say anything for us to know what his look conveyed, so I stepped forward, wanting to make his job easier for him and drawled;

“We’ll leave.”

“Please do so, Alphas… and your gifts; my lady doesn’t want them so you’ll need to take them with you.”

I smiled coldly at the guard then turned my attention to Leilani who stood by the corner, typing away at her phone and not sparing us another glance.

Seeing her like this, so distant… so beautiful yet completely out of reach, made my heart hurt in my chest. I nodded and then turned to my brothers who— even after the guards had come in— were still on their knees; and snapped;

“Stand up! Let’s go!”

But they didn’t move immediately. Caelum, out of all of us, looked the most torn. His eyes looked heavy as he begrudgingly rose to his feet, and then he whispered, but not low enough that we couldn’t hear.

He said; “Leilani, I can let you punch me in the face again. You can take ten teeth from my mouth this time and not one; just give us the opportunity to talk to you. Even for a minute.”

Goddess, I knew that it wasn’t funny but I almost wanted to laugh.

I almost wanted to laugh at his desperation, his regrets… and at the way he was looking at her like she was the fucking moon and sun and the stars out together.

Even Leilani couldn’t hold back her laughter as she chuckled darkly. She turned to him, stared at him long and hard, and then shook her head. “No.”

“Please.”

“We’ll speak about it later in court.” She drawled softly, “…and our first hearing is in two days, so be prepared. For now, I’ll have to file a restraining order against you three, so please do not come back here. Thank you.”

Her words, so softly spoken, hit me right where it hurt the most. I shuddered, but before I could speak, Kael beat me to it. He drawled;

“You’ll file a restraining order against us? Really, Leilani?”

“I’m already in the process of doing that, Alpha Stormborn,” she replied politely, her voice soft as she delivered the blow. “So please, leave.”

Fuck.

That hurt more than the one time I drew a tattoo on my spine. It hurt more than the times I’d seen her with Frostclaw. Dang, it was the most hurtful thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

Recoiling, I turned around and began to pick up some of the presents on the table, and my brothers, even though appeared distraught, began to mimic my actions.

We cleared out the office in no time and walked out, our eyes trained on Leilani who behaved as if she couldn’t see us. Like we were ghosts… unimportant.

And gosh, I needed to get the hell out of here before I died from a broken heart.

Kael left her office first, then Caelum, and by the time it was my turn to leave, I looked at her— like really looked at her— and my heart plummeted into my stomach when I realized something dreary… something that made my blood run cold.

Leilani wasn’t just cold to us, she didn’t care about us anymore. She didn’t love us anymore… and hell, I could hardly feel the mate bond between us anymore.

How’s that even possible?

As if noticing my scrutiny, she lifted her gaze and when her eye met mine, she sneered; “Stop looking!”

And I immediately did as told, my cheeks burning as I walked away from her.

—

If there is something I loved so much about this new version of Leilani then it is the fact that she always retaliates, and while my brothers and I were always on the receiving end of her infinite wrath, it helped that she was our mate, and that she was good at what she does.

Because tell me why exactly ten minutes after we walked out of Frostclaw. Inc’s building, we all received a text from Alpha Garfield, our newest investor, informing us that he would be pulling out of our corporation in order to work with a better company?

Kael and I tried desperately to talk him out of it but all our efforts proved futile, because according to him, Frostclaw. Inc’s team, headed by a woman named ‘Ms Sinclair’ had recently doctored a ground breaking prototype that was both faster and more efficient than our current model; and I needed no soothsayer to know that that was Leilani’s handiwork.

She had done this to us, maybe not directly, but as a warning.

And while I should be mad at the amount of money this would make us lose in a couple of hours, I was simply excited. Entertained even.

Because, how many times do you meet a woman capable of challenging you like this?

Kael was the most affected by the news. He picked up his phone, frowning as he seethed; “She’s taking this too far. I need to call her and find out why she keeps targeting our business whenever we have a misunderstanding.” He growled, and I watched in amusement as he brought his phone up to his ear and went quiet.

A minute passed and then two, and then—

His face suddenly fell and his skin turned ashen as he drawled;

“She blocked me…”

I froze.

Wait, what?

Caelum tried to call her too but after a couple of minutes of trying to reach her, he too frowned when it didn’t connect. He whispered; “I think she blocked me too.”

“Zevran, call her!” Kael desperately urged me. “I don’t know, but I doubt that she would block you and we need to talk to her concerning this matter!” He said,

But I didn’t try to call her.

I didn’t even want to join in this madness because my heart was too fragile at the moment, and even Hades from the underworld knew that it would break me completely if I called her only to realize that she had blocked me too.

No, never. I couldn’t live with that!
