Chapter 140: The beginning of the end.
Chalice.

By the time I finally came to, I wasn’t so surprised to discover that no one had stayed by my bedside all through the time I was out.

There were no drugs on my side table, no chairs close to my bed. No nothing. It felt as though everyone had finally decided to get rid of me. Like they all didn’t care if I lived or died anymore, and it was all Leilani’s fault.

This is what she’d been after from the onset. To ruin me. To hurt me just as much as I had done to her. It was the reason she had attended my wedding today.

She hadn’t come to celebrate but had come with the sole aim of ruining everything.

A shudder ran up my spine at the thought. However, something still felt weird to me. Something about what she’d done earlier still felt strange;

And it was the fact that she’d waited until the triplets and I said our wedding vows and then marked me before she had come up with those pieces of evidence.

It was as if… she wanted me to be with them.

Like she wanted them tied down to me for all of eternity… and that didn’t sit right with me.

Tears slipped out of my eyes, and I couldn’t help but decide then and there that I’d been so foolish to not see through Leilani’s plan from the get go.

I mean, she had told me about a gift and I had shrugged it off, thinking that she was all bark and no bite. But I was wrong.

“When you’re done slipping in amd out of your thoughts, you will tell me why you killed Grandma Aurora and framed Leilani for it.” A voice suddenly said from the door, snapping me out of my train of thoughts and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Gavin leaning against the door frame, his usually bright blue eyes now dark with barely contained fury.

Seeing him like this made my heart race. I dropped my head, squeezed my eyes shut slightly and drawled; “No.”

“No, what, Chalice?” He snapped irritatedly, “No, you didn’t know you framed her for a crime or what? Or are you suddenly forgetting that you admitted to committing the crime earlier?”

“I know…” Goddess, I didn’t even know what to say anymore. My chest felt like it was being squeezed hard and breathing felt like one of those tedious sports you would see at the Olympics.

I sat up slowly, my hands shaking slightly when I met his dark gaze one more time. I drawled; “It was an accident.”

“I know that. I saw it… my question is why did you frame Leilani for it?”

Again, I lowered my head in shame and shook my head. “I’m sorry.”

But that didn’t do it for Gavin. He rolled his eyes at me, and when he looked at me again, there was not even a trace of affection in his eyes. He looked at me with disgust… regarded me like I was as important as the sand under his shoes.

He shook his head and stepped away just in time for Caelum to step in, and as soon as I saw his dark eyes, stormy and pissed, my body stiffened.

I trembled, I stuttered; “Caelum… I-I can explain!”

But he didn’t talk right away. Instead he tilted his head to the side, watched me for a minute or two and asked; “Why?”

Why what?

What was he asking for exactly?

“Why do you hate Leilani so much? Why did you watch us punish her for crimes she didn’t commit? Was there some kind of high you derived from doing it? Huh?” He asked, but I didn’t respond.

I couldn’t bring myself to.

I bit my lips and looked away, only to wince when a sudden sharp pain tore through my skull. I closed my eyes and groaned; and it didn’t take me long to know what it was.

Caelum was using his Alpha aura on me. Again. All because of that wench.

I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping that I could fight off the effects of his aura. But I couldn’t. Tears slipped out of my eyes and down my face.

I trembled slightly, gripping hard on my bed cover. I muttered; “I did it because I didn’t want her to be loved by anybody. I wanted to get her thrown out of the pack and out of my father’s house…”

“Shit!” He growled, interrupting me. “So all these years, you were the devil? You’ve been the one behind every misfortune and you’ve ensured that your sister took the fall for you.”

His words, his tone tore at my heart. It made my heart feel like it was breaking into a thousand different pieces.

“You made me do…” his voice trailed off and he squeezed his eyes shut as if in physical pain before he continued; “…horrible things to her. You watched us— me— punish her like she was a criminal, and you did nothing?!”

I pushed myself out of the bed and my knees hit the floor before he could think of turning away from me. I cried; “Please, hear me out Caelum… baby. It’s not as bad as all of these make it sound.”

“Chalice, it is bad.” He drawled. “It is very bad. Not just for you but for us too. And do you know what just happened a few minutes ago?” His voice trailed off and I shook my head quickly.

“Leilani sued my brothers and I.” He answered slowly, making my eyes go wide. “She sued your father too and Gavin for domestic violence and battery… and as for your mother, she was sued for negligence.”

It felt like my entire world was crashing right before my own eyes.

My tongue felt swollen in my mouth. Even my vision blackened around the edges as a loud cry tore through the back of my throat.

I shook my head, trembling as I drawled; “No…”

“What’s no?” He seethed, his voice cold. “No, you cannot believe that Leilani would sue, or no that it all didn’t turn out the way you expected it to?”

But I couldn’t respond right away, and could only cry even as he took some steps away from me and called out to someone by the door.

“Jonah, she’s awake now. Take her to the holding cells and make sure that she’s unable to see anyone but my brothers. We’ll decide on what to do with her later!”

I froze.

“Caelum…!”

But he wouldn’t even look at me. He wasn’t even looking at or listening to me!

“Caelum please, I am pregnant and ill. Condemning me to the cells will only make things worse. Please, I am sorry. I really am!”

His eyes finally met mine after a long moment. He sighed, shook his head and drawled; “You should have thought about all of that before doing what you did?”

“Please… I’m sorry. No! Please baby, I am pregnant with your child!”

At that he paused. His eyes darkened and he tilted his head to the side, watching me with piercing eagle eyes. He spat; “How am I even sure that the child is mine?”

And as soon as I heard that, I froze. His eyes flashed with malice and I knew that it was only a matter of time before he would try to use his Alpha aura on me again, so I did the one thing I knew I could to get myself out of this mess.

I closed my eyes and let my body go limp, pretending to faint.

From somewhere in the room, I heard Kael saying to Caelum; “She’s pregnant. I don’t think the holding cells would be safe for her and the baby.”

But Caelum scoffed. “The child is mine,” he said, “… at least that’s what she said. So now, I think I know the best place where she and the baby can be… and that’s the holding cells.”

“Make sure she’s chained up with silver chains.” Another voice added in, and I didn’t need to open my eyes to know that it was Zevran. “We need to make sure that she doesn’t escape, and I still have some questions to ask her.”

Before everything finally dissolved into silence for real, I smelled a familiar scent:

Louis.

I froze.

And goddess, my heart literally sank. It sank into the bottom of my stomach, causing me to immediately start to feel nauseous before I fainted for real.
