Chapter 135: At last.
Chalice.

My body still ached from being fucked hard by Louis last night, so when Gavin barged into my room, looking as though he’d just run a marathon, I was royally pissed.

I seethed; “God, Gavin, what if I was naked?!”

“I checked in with Agnes first!” He snapped back, “…she told me you’d just finished dressing up so I knew beforehand that you weren’t!”

I froze.

I was surprised, not at his words but at his tone. Goddess, he’d never raised his voice at me before. Had never looked at me like this before, and right now, it was surprising that instead of the adoration he usually always accorded me with, all that was left now was a strange anger… and is that suspicion I see in his eyes?

My heart raced as I turned away from my vanity mirror to face him. I folded my arms across my chest and asked; “What is it this time?”

My tone was cool but it was a stark contrast to how I felt on the inside. And I became even more nervous when his eyes roved my body slowly before he spat; “Tell me Chalice, did you lie about seeing Leilani push grandma down the stairs?”

As soon as he asked that, I froze. I swear, my heart literally stopped beating in my chest too. Goosebumps spread across my body and an indescribable amount of chill spread through me. But trying to appear like I was unaffected by his words, I frowned. “Gavin?”

“Do not call my name. I asked you a simple question and I am hoping you will respond with an answer that’s just as simple.”

I lowered my gaze and shook my head. As if on cue, tears pooled in my eyes but when I looked up at Gavin, hoping to guilt trip him with my tears, he didn’t flinch. He snorted instead; “Chalice this is not the time to cry! What I ask of you is a simple yes or no question!”

“I know!” I screamed back, “…but I am hurt that you would even ask that. It sounds as if you never even believed me! Like you don’t trust me!”

At my words, he stopped and stared at me for a long time, his eyes softening for a moment. Seeing him like this made me somewhat happy, because I knew then and there that I had successfully avoided his question, as well as guilt trip him.

But I was wrong.

I was so so wrong.

He sighed, pulled me into a hug and pulled away just as fast to place his warm hands on my cheeks. And with a voice so low and so cold, he drawled; “Right now, you’ve successfully made it hard for me to believe you.”

“Gavin?”

“It’s difficult to believe you if you wouldn’t even answer the question straightforwardly. And gosh, Chalice, you sound like you have skeletons in your cupboard.”

“Gavin! You will not talk to me this way!” I cried now, more out of fear than annoyance.

His hands slowly dropped from my face and he nodded. “I will because I can. And that’s because I’m your elder brother.”

“You’re being disrespectful now.” I argued, trying and failing woefully to calm my raging heartbeat, but he only shrugged.

“Your wedding to the triplets may be in three days, successfully making you the new Luna of the pack, but if I find out that you had lied against Leilani for whatever reason, I personally will bring you down. I wouldn’t try to protect you anymore because all that’s ever done is make you spoiled.”

My heart fell. Goddess, it felt like I could feel it sinking into my stomach.

More tears spilled from my eyes and I could only watch through blurry eyes as he marched away from me, not once looking back at me even though I was crying so loudly.

It felt as though he didn’t love me anymore, and I couldn’t recognize this side of him.

The slamming of my door was what snapped me back to the present and with shaky limbs, I made my way to my bed.

Today, I had decided to come to my parents’ house. I had come here to be away from all the chaos happening back at the triplets’ mansion; But that had been a wrong idea because this house is just as bad… if not worse.

Despite the pain in my chest and the panic now clawing its way through my veins, I got under my bed cover and closed my eyes, whilst hoping desperately that this was a dream,

—and that by the time I wake up again, Gavin wouldn’t be mad anymore, and that he would return to loving me.

And again, I was wrong.

—

Kael.

“Mother, do you think there’s no other way to postpone the wedding for a bit?” I asked our mother who was seated across from me with her face buried under a newspaper.

She slowly folded the newspaper and placed it onto her lap, her eyes darting between my face and that of my brothers as she drawled;

“No.”

“But mom—”

“Prominent Alphas all around the continent have been invited already. Your ‘woman’ is pregnant too, and goddess, I love you three so much but I have to return to my mate— your father. He’s ill and alone on his island and has tasked me with this one job. Don’t ruin it for me!”

“But we’re your sons!” Zevran cried, “and we’re begging you for this one thing.

“Yes, you are!” She answered, her voice softening for a bit as she stared lovingly in Zevran’s direction. “But he’s my mate and he’s sick. I’m not like you three who abandons their mate. I love mine!”

That subtle insult made my head reel. I closed my eyes for a bit and sighed, ignoring my wolf’s voice in my head as he kept reminding me of how ‘he’d told me so’, and said to mother; “We just want to be sure that we’re not making a mistake.”

“Oh, you guys are!” She answered softly. “You’ve been making a mistake for over a decade, and trust me, it’s a little too late now to make amends. So please, if you love me, you’ll be smart enough to get married, inherit all your father wants you to because truthfully, I don’t know if he will recover from this illness and you’d be down to nothing if he dies before you get married.”

My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth as I turned to stare at my brothers who had bewildered expressions on their faces— which was no surprise— but do you know what surprises me?

The fact that Caelum hasn’t said anything yet.

The fact that he of all people was not against our idea of pushing our wedding to a later date.

I cocked my eyebrows at him in askance and he shrugged before muttering;

“Let’s just say that I’m conflicted too, just like you two. And I have my own suspicions too.”

And that was weird. It was very weird.

Because at last, it seemed as though he was finally snapping out of his obsession for Chalice!
