102: Stupid Caelum, stupid Gavin.

102: Stupid Caelum, stupid Gavin.

Leilani.

I slowly turned back to Maya, my voice barely above a whisper as I asked; “How do you know her?” She scoffed, rolling her eyes with a kind of irritation that I’ve never seen her exude.

Now, it almost seemed as if she disliked Chalice a lot more than I did, and that was funny.

She said; “We met once when I went to shop for some bags and she was an absolute bitch.

I would have given her a blue eye if she didn’t look so much like you.” Her response made me laugh despite myself.

I snorted.

“Don’t do that!” “Girl, just scolding her that day made me feel bad.

It felt as though I was scolding you!” I chuckled so much that tears filled the corners of my eyes.

But after that, we managed to forget all about Chalice and the triplets who were presently glaring holes into the back of my skull.

We ordered our food amidst chatter and we had just finished and were munching into our desserts when suddenly, a familiar sugary vanilla scent filled my nostrils.

I rolled my eyes.

“Yeah, right!” Maya snorted, letting her fork drop into her plate of strawberry cheesecake just as Chalice approached us.

“Hi!” Chalice muttered with a smile- a smile that even blind people could see was fake.

I turned slowly to acknowledge her and then let my eyes rove along her body with exaggerated intensity.

She cowered slightly at my glare but quickly fixed her posture and said; “I saw you from afar, sister, and decided to come say hello.

Who’s the pretty woman with you?” That was the tactic she usually always used to steal my friends when we were kids.

It was the way she’d tried to befriend Agnes and failed… and how she’d gotten Amy and Dawn… and then Jennifer who then died shortly afterwards from unknown causes.

I frowned at the memory and turned to look at Maya who now looked like she was about to burn down the whole world.

She had a deep scowl etched into her face, one that she didn’t even bother to hide as she turned to glare at Chalice.

She spat; “Do you have a short-term memory?” I froze.

Chalice blanched.

“Huh?” “Oh, I learned that you were in an accident recently so I’d like to know if you hit your head or something?

So now, are you suffering from amnesia or you just plan to be stupid?” Maya asked, and goddess help me, I couldn’t stop my jaw from dropping.

My eyes widened so much, I feared it would bulge out of my skull.

But that wasn’t the funny part.

The funny part was Chalice’s face.

She looked so pink, and her eyes were so red, she looked like something straight out of an animation.

Her usually smug face crumpled as she glared at Maya.

“Excuse me?” I fought against the urge to giggle and failed.

I failed so badly my chewed cheesecake almost came out through my nostrils.

And after practically spluttering so much, I finally struggled to speak.  I snickered; “What Maya?

Are you good?” Chalice butted in just then.

Her eyes brimmed with tears as she asked softly; “Have we met before?

Or do you just have a personal vendetta against me?” Maya’s eyes darted from my face to Chalice’s and then she scoffed.

“Oh no, sugar.

I don’t.

You’re not that important!” And then turning to me, she continued; “Is she always like this?” I frowned.

“Like how?” She shrugged defensively, then turned to a red-rimmed-eyed Chalice and muttered; “I don’t know… does she always feign innocence like this?

Because I can swear that she wasn’t this soft with me when we met outside fifth street!” I chuckled at Maya’s words saying nothing, because frankly, what was there to say?

Chalice was a self righteous bitch who got high from making people think she was some delicate little flower.

And while I was already used to it, obviously Maya wasn’t.

Chalice wiped her face with the back of her hand and turned to face Maya with an apologetic look.

She muttered softly, not stopping to cast a pointed look around us, as if beckoning for public attention.  She drawled; “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “You don’t know what I’m talking about or you’re just trying to act dumb?

How can you possibly pretend not to know me?

Me, from Fifth Street?” “I go to fifth street a lot, so I don’t know-” Chalice began to say but stopped when Maya waved her off in irritation.

“Do you quarrel with everyone there?

Yikes!

You must be such a bitch then.

But since you’ve decided to ‘forget me’, I’ll remind you.

We met when I went shopping for bags, and then your friends and you tried to bully me.

I then said that you were broke for wearing a fifty dollar dress, and that seems to not have changed one bit because the one you’re wearing now is from SHEIN, and it’s about 37 dollars and 60 cents.” My jaw dropped… like quite literally.

In fact, anyone could pick it up with a shovel due to how low they hung.

I stared between a satisfied looking Maya and an embarrassed Chalice in surprise, and you may call me a bitch for this but it was the most satisfying sight I’ve seen in a long time.

Her face darkened.

Even her voice dropped a few notches as she snarled; “Oh, that was you?” “Yeah, it was me cupcake!

Now you don’t have to pretend to be sweet to me anymore.

So shoo!” Maya retaliated with sass.

And again, like a completely entertained idiot, I chuckled.

I guess henceforth, I’ll just let Maya take care of Chalice.

However, I had just opened my mouth to speak, to probably tell Chalice off and ask Maya to back down when a deep baritone came from behind us.

It drawled; “What’s going on, babe?” From the sentence and voice, I didn’t even need to check to know that it was the dumbass Caelum.

I rolled my eyes.

Yeah, of course, babe!

Go on and spew more lies!

And as if hearing my thoughts, Chalice spun around quickly, her face morphing into a look of mortification as she cried; “Oh Caelum, thank goddess you’re here!

I only came over to say hello to Leilani and her friend.

I don’t know why they’re being so mean to me all of a sudden!” Caelum’s face darkened.

He growled; “Leilani!” “Oh please, don’t call my name.

I’m at my table.

You should scold whoever left their table to others’ just to create chaos!” I hissed at him.

His eyes thinned into slits but just as he lifted his hand as if to strike me, I swiftly rose to my feet, glaring straight into his eyes with just enough rage as I could feel.

I hissed; “Do it.” “Don’t dare me.” “Oh, please… I dare you.

And trust me, you’ll be losing more than a tooth this time!” The rage on Caelum’s face was palpable.

He grabbed my shoulders, his breath fanning my face as he growled; “You’re pushing me, wench!” “Just like you’ve pushed me all my life!” I bit back, “… so deal with it!” That had it for Caelum.

He raised his hand to strike me but before the blow could land, another pair of large hands clamped around his wrists, stopping him.

“Caelum, stop!” My gaze tore upwards to find Kael and Zevran looking down at me with stormy expressions in their eyes.

But I didn’t thank them for stopping him.

If anything, it only reminded me of how alike they all were, and how better suited for Chalice they were.

They were all birds of a feather.

However, I couldn’t help the way my heart raced, or the sudden tremor coursing up my spine or the heat searing across my flesh from where Kael’s skin lightly grazed against mine.  I shrugged away from him, turned to Chalice and seethed; “My friend and I came here for a peaceful dinner, and I’ll not let you ruin it.” Then to Caelum, I added; “…and Caelum, if you hit me, I’ll hit you back.

I don’t give a shit if you’re an Alpha or if you’re stronger than I am.

I’ll strike you without regrets.” “Leilani..” this time, it was Zevran who growled in warning, but I didn’t turn to him.

I was too enraged to.

Now, even Maya had risen to her feet.

She stood beside me protectively, her fingers lacing through mine as she glared pointedly at Chalice.

And then, she bowed curtly-because culture demands it- and seethed through gritted teeth; “Alphas, with all due respect, teach your woman some manners.” Chalice’s face colored a bright pink.

She cried; “You-” But before she could finish that sentence, a new voice joined the ruckus.

It snarled; “That’s enough, sister!” And I didn’t need to turn around to know it was Gavin.  However, what stunned me was the fact that he’d just scolded Chalice.

That he wasn’t jumping into conclusions and taking her side.

And I immediately understood why when his eyes met Maya’s, and when I felt her stiffen beside me.

My eyes snagged up to his face and I frowned when I saw the look in his eyes.  Goddess, the absolute fool had the nerve to look torn.

He had the effrontery to look at me and allow his gaze soften.

Then he looked away and drawled; “Chalice apologize.” I froze.
