Chapter 246: Bloody mistake.
I creaked the door open, and her sisters turned to me immediately.

“Sophia, please…” That’s was what I managed to say before her face lighten up.

“Leon!” She gasped, rushing into my arms. She wrapped herself around me tightly, her voice trembling with relief. “I knew you would come. I knew it.”

She turned to her sisters, smiling brightly. “Please excuse us. My husband and I are about to have our first time.”

Her sisters shrieked excitedly and hurried out, giggling as they went.

“Close the door behind you,” I said quietly.

The door clicked shut, and the room fell into silence.

I took her hands gently. “Sophia, there’s something I have to tell you.”

Her expression softened, eyes glowing with affection. “What is it, my love?”

I hesitated. My voice faltered. “I’m not sure how you’ll react to this… because it’s a bit much.”

The light in her eyes dimmed almost instantly, as if her instincts were warning her before I even spoke.

“What happened, my love?” she asked, her tone trembling.

“First,” I said quietly, “you have to stop calling me that.”

Her smile vanished. “You are my husband. You are my mate. Why can’t I call you my love?”

“I’m sorry, but you have to stop it. And second…” I took a slow breath. “I’m not your mate.”

She slapped me. Hard.

The sting shot across my cheek instantly.

“Why would you say that?” she screamed. “We’re married! You marked me!” She pulled her collar down to show the mark on her neck. “This! This is proof! So please, stop spewing nonsense and do what we’re supposed to do!”

“Please, don’t do this,” I said quietly, shaking my head.

“Stop saying nonsense!” she yelled.

“I’m not saying nonsense!” I shouted back, my voice cracking. “All of this—it’s not my fault! It’s all a lie! The mate bond between us was forged! The demons did it—to distract me with you so they could take Aurora. And it worked.”

Her face paled, disbelief washing over her.

“This—” I pressed a hand to my chest “—this isn’t real, Sophia. None of it. That’s why there’s no true connection between us. Don’t you feel it? There’s nothing there. No bond. No pull. No spark.”

I swallowed hard, my voice breaking.

“Because I don’t feel a single thing for you.”

“I’m feeling everything for you!” she screamed, her voice breaking as tears gathered in her eyes. “Every thing, every emotion—from love, to lust, to pain. You are my mate. I can feel it in my heart!”

I shook my head slowly. “No. All of this is just delusion. You needed someone to pull you out of that prison you were trapped in—and I was the nearest hand. That’s why you forced this bond, Sophia. Deep down, you know there’s nothing real in your heart.”

“Is this what you think a mate bond feels like?” I asked quietly. “Because it’s not.”

She took a trembling step back. “Stop it.”

“I don’t want my mark to keep you from speaking your truth,” I said. “But I’m not your mate. I’ll do nothing but ruin you. Can’t you see that?”

I tried to reach for her hands, but she slapped mine away.

“You’ve marked me publicly!” she cried. “No one will take me now. No one will accept me as their mate! And now you come here telling me some stupid lie about demons forging the bond between us?”

Her voice rose, shaking with fury. “This is because of her, isn’t it? That witch! You want her all to yourself. You still love her—so you lie! You lie on those bloody demons’ names just because you can’t stand that fate chose me and not her!”

“Stop it,” I growled, my voice low and dangerous.

“You need to accept it,” she said, jabbing a finger into my chest. “I am your mate. Not that bloody damn witch!”

I clenched my jaw. “Aurora is not a bloody damn witch,” I snapped. “She never was—and you will never call her that again.”

Sophia flinched but didn’t stop. She stepped closer, her anger shaking her voice. “So you defend her? You defend her over me? You defend that useless witch over your own wife?”

“You’re not my wife,” I said coldly.

Her eyes widened with disbelief. “Don’t forget—you didn’t only mark me publicly. You wed me publicly! In front of everyone! So when you still had feelings for her, why did you pick me? Why?”

She started hitting me, her fists weak but relentless. “Why did you mate me? Why did you marry me?! Because now no wolf wants me! No wolf will ever want me—all because of you!”

I caught her wrists, holding her still, but she kept shaking, her voice breaking.

“You damn monster,” she spat. “I won’t allow this to end. You’ll stay in this. You’ll impregnate me. We’ll live like a normal family. Because I am the Beta’s wife—not some damn witch!”

The council are going to be the judge of it,” I said quietly, forcing myself to stay calm. “And I’m just asking—no, I’m begging you. If the council ever asks whether you want to end all of this, please… accept. So both of us can go our separate ways. You deserve peace. You deserve a happy life.”

“A happy life?” she snapped, her voice rising with disbelief. “I am living a happy life currently! I used to be in jail, Leon! My father is dead, my mother and sisters— they’re only living happily today because I got married to a Beta!” Her voice cracked. “How do you think our lives will turn out if I become a normal she-wolf again? You think they’ll let us live? They’ll throw us back in prison, Leon. Hazel will see to that. They’ll ruin us all!”

I took a step closer, trying to steady my tone. “Nobody is going to harm you. I’ll make sure of that.”

She let out a bitter laugh, trembling as tears filled her eyes. “No! You can’t make sure of anything! All of this is your fault!”

She started crying harder, her hands shaking as she pointed at me. “I am not leaving this marriage—or this bond you created! If you’re just looking for some cheap excuse to run back to that witch, then go! Go be with her! But I’m not ending this. I won’t!”

“Sophia—”

“If you cheat on me,” she hissed, “I’ll report you to the council. And you’ll pay the price—legitimately.”

She spun on her heel, storming out of the room and slamming the door so hard the sound echoed through my bones.

I just stood there, frozen.

“Damn it,” I breathed. “I’ve made a mistake. I’ve made a damn mistake.”

I slammed my fist into the wall. The stone cracked beneath the impact, shards scattering across the floor. Blood trickled down my knuckles, but I barely felt it. My whole body was trembling, my vision blurring as tears pricked my eyes.

“No,” I whispered, biting my lip hard. “No, damn it—no!”

But I was right. I had to be right.

The council had to see the truth—that the mate bond was forged, unnatural, a curse.

I couldn’t give up now.

Aurora… Aurora was my witness.

Darius said it in front of her.

I rushed down the corridor to Aurora’s chamber, my heart pounding in my chest so hard I could hear it echo. My palms were slick with sweat as I raised my hand and knocked on her door.

The door opened, and I found myself face to face with her sister. She looked startled—confused—and our eyes locked for a brief, tense second.

Then I heard her voice.

Aurora’s gentle tone floated from inside the room, soft and familiar. My heart clenched, a thousand emotions storming through me at once.

Before she could step into view, her sister quickly slipped out, shut the door behind her, and grabbed my wrist.

“What are you doing here?” she hissed, her voice sharp with panic. “Do you know you’re not supposed to be here, right?”

“I know,” I said breathlessly. “I know, but please—I need to see Aurora. It’s important. It’s very important.”

“No,” she said firmly. “You can’t see her. She’s busy.”

“She can’t be busy! This is about my marriage—about the mate bond!”

Her brows furrowed. “What does Aurora have to do with your marriage or your mate bond? Haven’t you caused enough trouble?”

“Sister, is everything alright?” Aurora’s voice called softly from behind the door, sensing the tension.

“Everything is fine!” her sister called back quickly, forcing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. Then she turned to me again, her expression hard. “You need to leave. My sister has nothing to do with your marriage or your bond. She’s been through enough. I don’t care what the two of you went through together—she is no longer your concern. She is not your plaything, or whatever you called her before.”

“I respect Aurora,” I said, my voice low, desperate. “I just need one word with her. Please. This could save both my life and my wife’s.”

Her sister narrowed her eyes. “My sister has nothing—”

“Your sister has everything to do with this!” I cut in. “It was because of her that they forged the mate bond between me and that bloody she-wolf downstairs! They wanted Aurora out of the way. They knew she was bonded to me—so they created a fake mate bond to distract me. That’s what this is all about! They wanted to separate us—to leave her alone!”

Her eyes widened slightly, but she didn’t back down.

“Even if that nonsense you’re spewing is true,” she said coldly, shoving me back a step, “then good. Aurora is better off alone. Better without you. Whatever you had with her—it’s over. She deserves peace, and you can’t give her that.”

She took a deep breath, glaring at me with tears glinting in her eyes.

“Please,” she said quietly but firmly, “leave Aurora out of your mess. Leave her alone, Leon. Let her be.”
