Chapter 287: In The Miracle City, Levina. Part-2.
If it was in the game, a sudden timer would have appeared on the monitor screen, representing that he had a limited amount of time to explore the entire city and leave.
Jareth hated this kind of mechanism, as it gave you barely enough time to even complete the quests, let alone explore the entire area properly.
In the entire game, exploring various places was Jareth’s favorite thing. When a time limit is placed on the thing that you like to do the most, everyone will feel irritated.
‘Forget it; let’s move. there’s no time to waste!’
*Ahhh… this nostalgic peaceful flow of mana… there’s really no place better than home indeed…*
Rororon’s voice was filled with happiness and excitement from feeling that familiar mana flow in the surroundings.
Jareth raised his head and glanced at the ruined city in front of him.
Every single bit of it was horribly destroyed, and every building was in a collapsed state.
There was only one building barely intact, and that was the central tower located in the center of the city.
The tower had many damaged areas, but it was still standing firmly on the ground, and it was so tall that it was piercing the clouds.
There was no ‘sky’ in this small isolated pocket of the spirit realm, and there were only raging void storms everywhere.
Many areas of the city were trapped in horrible spatial fluctuations, and several destroyed parts of the building were floating in random places due to that.
Jareth could not relate this place to the word ‘Miracle City’ at all; if not for that mighty tower standing in the distance, he would have mistaken it for some other place.
The massive tower was covered in hundreds of thousands of mana enchantments, and its mere presence was bending the flow of mana according to its will.
Jareth flew higher in the sky and noticed that the entire city of Levina was located on a massive island that was floating in this void storm-filled location of the spirit realm.
There was thick miasma in the air, and many places in the city were heavily corrupted; even the clouds were raining down liquid miasma in several places.
“No wonder you said that this is a city of ‘misfortunes,’ not the city of miracles… the place is completely ruined with nothing intact left except for that weird tower in the middle…”
*Sigh, back in its heyday, hundreds of fairies and spirits used to live in this place; unlike now, it was a prosperous city where everyone was happy and free…*
*Humans destroyed everything… They looted the entire area, and then this miasma completely eroded everything…. The main pathway here collapsed… if not for that alternate route you found, it’s impossible to come here…*
Jareth sighed at those words and flew towards the massive tower in the central area while avoiding all the bizarre twisted phenomena in the destroyed city.
The city that was famous for its beauty and for its fairies was now in complete ruin.
Everywhere Jareth looked there was nothing but broken debris of collapsed structures or miasma and corruption.
“What is that tower, by the way? How come it’s still intact?”
*I don’t know what that thing is either… just like that universe map and that portal-opening artifact, this tower existed here since time unknown…*
*In the legends it’s said that a great treasure is stored at the very top of this tower… but many fairies and spirits tried to find it, but they couldn’t…*
“Don’t tell me that human got a whiff of that legend and that became one of the main reasons why they attacked?”
*Yeah… you are kind of right… humans are greedy and selfish; once they found out about this legend, many tried to climb the tower…*
*It was impossible to climb from the outside, as the top floor were covered in void storms and spatial fluctuations from outside…*
“Yeah, even now the upper floors are covered in that; I can sense it… but there’s also miasmic clouds up there now…”
Jareth flew towards the tower with great speed and stared at the clouds above with a helpless look.
He can pierce right through those clouds, but spatial fluctuations and void storms are too much, even for him.
They can cause tremendous pressure on his mana shield, and if some real powerful strand of spatial fluctuation hits him, he will be killed on the spot with no time to defend.
It’s too risky of a method to climb from outside.
“So they must have tried climbing from inside, I guess…”
*Yeah, there were many powerful golems, traps and mechanisms inside the tower on each and every floor… they caused many such courageous people to die…*
*The fairies had to stop them and ban them from entering the tower, as that was causing too many deaths, but humans didn’t like that decision and they thought that fairies were stopping them from aiming for that grand treasure…*
“Ah, a classic human-like decision… it must have been some random a*s politician or minister of the king who must have instilled this wrong idea by spreading misinformation…”
“No matter the world, it’s the same story everywhere…”
Jareth could only sigh and shake his head in helplessness at that; he knew that people had a tendency of putting undeserving people in positions of power, which was very common in his previous world and is common in this world too.
Those types of people then create massive-scale troubles that end up escalating to the point that they are difficult to even handle anymore.
The same likely happened here, and fairies who had no knowledge about how human societies think and work became the victims of this situation.
*After killing and slaughtering many fairies, humans made it to the tower once again; they used powerful people to shatter and destroy every mechanism and trap inside!*
*This tower is very sturdy from outside due to its enchantments that protect it from damage occurring from outside, but it’s weaker from inside… All the damage you see on it now happened from inside!*
“So, after destroying every floor and golem, the human armies reached the very top of the tower…”
*Yeah, they reached the top… it turns out the grand treasure from the legend… it was referring to a stone slate placed on the very top floor. they forced a fairy to read it back then, and it had the following words written on it…*
…
{Congratulations! You have conquered all the floors and made it to the top!
This tower is designed to test your teamwork and make you a better person!
By working together and growing together with your friends on this difficult trial, you have grown better together!
Congratulations! With the power of ‘friendship,’ you have won!
The Greatest treasure and reward in the world are, in fact, the friends and friendships that you made along the way!}
…
“PFFFFTTTT!!!! What!?…”
Even someone like Jareth, who usually maintains a cold and calm demeanor, burst into laughter after hearing that.
Jareth was very familiar with this cheeky tone; the developer of this game liked tort*ring their players a lot!
They always liked to do things that would make players rage quit the game.
Those shrewd developers must have made the tower very difficult to conquer and then must have placed this slate at the end to troll the players who succeeded in conquering the tower.
In other words, the entire tower thing was actually just a massive prank made up to troll the players, and the human army ended up falling for it.
Not only did they slaughter the entire fairy race for this, but they also sacrificed thousands of lives to conquer the tower only to get pranked in the end.
Jareth could already imagine the facial expressions of the people who must have been the first to reach the upper floor and find the slate.
