Chapter 400: Older Brother’s Test [I]
The man who had attacked him was Sybil’s other brother… and despite the fact that his two sisters were already married, he remained a dedicated bachelor who somehow took it upon himself to assess the quality of any potential man entering their family.
It was practically a hobby for him.
A calling, even.
And judging from the way he swooshed back his dark green hair and dusted off his shoulder like he had just finished slaying a demon, he took that calling very seriously.
Azel respected him for this, after all, he would be doing the same thing for his daughters but being on the receiving end of this was quite tiring.
“I must admit, I’m surprised,” Sylus said as he straightened up.
He was taller than Azel and his shoulders were broad, his posture relaxed in that arrogant way only gifted fighters always had.
He had a sharp, masculine chin and a stub of a beard framed his features. “Were you perhaps expecting me to attack?”
Azel dusted his suit calmly. “Well, I felt you waiting in the hallway for the past ten minutes, if that helps. So yes… I expected you to jump in eventually.”
He had been there since Azel had entered the place and seemed to have been restraining himself from dashing straight at Azel.
A slow grin spread across Sylus’s face.
He clapped a hand onto Azel’s shoulder with the enthusiasm of a man greeting a long-lost comrade. “Now that… that is the kind of answer I like! If the men my sisters married were even half as competent as you, I’d sleep far easier at night.”
Azel blinked and turned toward the two husbands quietly sipping wine. Both of them froze and their cheeks flushed red.
“Let’s take Jonah for example,” Sylus said, pointing lazily at the first sister’s husband. “He didn’t even sense me coming. I kicked him into a wall, he’s quite weak. I don’t know what my sister sees in him honestly.”
Jonah choked, coughing on his drink as his wife glared at Sylus.
“It’s true,” Sylus added cheerfully. “We had to fix the dent.”
Jonah looked mortified.
Sylus walked toward the second husband… the man instantly stiffened.
“As for him…” Sylus continued, tapping the man’s shoulder. “he reacted quickly enough to catch my kick. Impressive. But the wind force still sent him flying out the window.”
The poor husband turned pale, remembering the experience a little too vividly.
Sylus returned to Azel with a satisfied smirk. “This is the first time any man in this house has caught my strike without being hospitalized, so naturally, I’m very intrigued. And as such, I’d like to challenge you to a spar—”
“No.”
Sybil physically shoved herself between them with her eyes glowing. “Big Brother Sylus, just because you want to be a Great Mage doesn’t mean you get to fight everyone who breathes near the family! Azel traveled from really far away to see me today. Let him rest!”
Sylus raised a brow. “Oh? Since when did you defend a man?”
“That’s not—! That’s not the point!!” Sybil’s voice cracked cutely.
Sylus only chuckled. “It seems even perverts can change.”
She kicked him but he ignored it.
“I’m afraid this isn’t optional,” he said as his tone changed, he no longer sounded like he was joking.
He sounded completely serious. “This spar is part of the test.”
Even Sybil froze. When Sylus used that tone, everyone understood… the matter was completely decided.
“And,” Sylus continued, eyeing Azel’s white expensive suit. “change out of that. It looks expensive, and I don’t intend to ruin it.”
He turned to Bella. “Take him to my changing room. Prepare something suitable for someone fighting me.”
Bella bowed quickly. “Right this way, Sir Azel.”
As Azel followed her, Sybil dropped into her seat, groaning loudly into her palms.
“Please go easy on him,” she muttered toward her brother.
Sylus placed a warm hand on her head. “I’m honestly glad you found someone you care about. But if he can’t at least defeat me, he’ll never be able to protect you so I won’t be holding back at all.”
Sybil watched him walk away with a sinking stomach. Her brother was well-known for going overboard and she was very sure that Azel was going to be limited during the spar.
…
“I still can’t believe we get to watch two powerhouses go at it!” Jonah whispered excitedly as the Astra family gathered in the backyard.
Calling it a backyard was generous.
This was a full-scale martial arena, complete with carved stone flooring and neatly arranged spectator seats, even though it was just the Clan head, his daughters and their husbands that were going to be watching today.
Sylus stood on one end of the arena wearing a fitted green tracksuit, the Astra insignia stitched proudly into the chest.
He bounced lightly on his heels in a warm up while his eyes began glowing as he stared at Azel.
On the opposite end, Azel adjusted the black martial set Bella had dressed him in.
It hugged him perfectly… too perfectly. Sybil’s sisters whispered among themselves about how unfairly handsome he looked.
“You look good in that,” Sylus called out.
Azel cracked his knuckles. “Feels comfortable.”
“As it should. Now listen carefully,” Sylus said as he stretched. “For this fight, you will not use a sword or any kind of weapon. Only your fists.”
Azel rolled his shoulders. “I’m fine with that.”
Inside, he mused.
‘Another spar… but this one might actually tell me something. Sylus is near Grand Mage level. Perfect chance to gauge my current limits without using divinity.’
“I like your confidence,” Sylus said. “But confidence alone won’t help you.”
The head butler stepped between them, raising a hand.
“Begin!”
Wind tore through the arena as Sylus vanished… no, accelerated forward.
His body blurred with wind magic, and in the blink of an eye, he was in front of Azel with his fist cocked back and swirling with compressed air.
Sybil gasped.
The first sister whispered, “He’s using Second Windflow right away?!”
The punch came with enough force to break stone.
Azel parried.
It was a simple parry but it was enough to completely stop his attack.
Sylus’s eyes widened… That parry left him wide open.
Azel’s fist struck him squarely in the abdomen.
BOOM.
Sylus flew backward like a ragdoll, skidding across the stone floor and crashing into the arena’s barrier wall hard enough to crack it.
‘Is he that weak?’
