Chapter 398: How To Impress Your Father-In-Law [I]
“He’s coming today,” Sybil said, sitting upright at the dressing table while four maids swarmed around her like bees around honey.

Brushes, combs, pins, powders… everything was deployed with military precision by the maids.

It made sense; with the way Sybil had been bragging about Azel to her family which was borderline worshipping him to them, the maids collectively decided she needed to be treated like a princess today.

Astra daughters were always well-kept… but Sybil was being pampered like an Empress.

“Yes, my lady,” one maid said as she carefully ran her fingers through Sybil’s long, vibrant green hair. “My lady, don’t you think this hair is too long for you?”

Sybil closed her eyes for a moment. She remembered Veyra… how stupidly long her hair was and how Azel didn’t seem to mind even a little.

If anything, he seemed to like long hair on his women.

“No,” Sybil said, firmly. “I think my hair is perfect. I just want you all to style it properly… y’know, so if we ever decide to get intimate, he can grab my hair while he’s doing it from behind.”

All four maids froze.

One dropped a pin.

Another dropped her soul.

“My lady…” Bella, the senior maid, said slowly. “I am not sure your father would permit that kind of… discussion.”

“Who cares what Father wants… oww!” Sybil hissed. “Bella, you did that on purpose.”

“I assure you I did not, my lady,” Bella replied with an exasperated sigh. “Your hair is simply very knotted in certain places. You don’t comb it properly. If we want you looking your absolute best today, we need to fix everything.”

Sybil slumped, cheeks puffed. “Ugh. Fine. Just be gentle.”

“And… my lady?” Bella asked. “Did you remember to tell Mr. Azel he has to arrive in time for breakfast?”

“…Breakfast?” Sybil blinked blankly.

Then the memory hit like a brick. Astra family tradition: the groom-to-be must arrive for the morning meal, no matter where he was coming from… even if it was the opposite end of the world.

“Shit. I forgot to include that in the letter…”

“I knew it!” Bella wailed dramatically, pressing a hand to her forehead like she’d been cursed. “I should have supervised when you wrote it!”

“I told him to dress properly!” Sybil argued defensively. “That should count for something!”

Bella shook her with both hands. “My lady! This is your first engagement invitation! The man coming for your hand in marriage must be informed of everything clearly! ‘Dress properly’ is not specific! What if he thinks ‘properly’ means something barbaric like casual noblewear?”

“I DON’T KNOW, BELLA, I PANICKED!”

The other maids sighed in unison.

…

Sybil sat stiffly at the far end of the long Astra dining table.

Her palms were sweating. Not from the heat though… Astra City was cold year-round but rather from the weight of everyone’s eyes on her.

Her father, the Clan Head sat proudly at the head of the table with his chin high and beard groomed to perfection.

Her mother was out of town, but her two older sisters had arrived, each with their husbands, and Sybil wanted nothing more than to punt each of them into the sun.

Her sisters were beautiful, mature women with overflowing chests, elegant curves, serene smiles… and Sybil hated them.

Not for normal sibling reasons… oh no.

She hated them because they had inherited their mother’s ridiculously large breasts while Sybil had… barely anything.

If her butt weren’t blessed, she’d look more like one of the boys.

‘I swear if I didn’t have a good ass, people would think I’m a guy,’ she thought bitterly. ‘What does that fucker see in me anyway?’

“I still can’t believe our little Sybil is actually bringing the Sword Saint’s son over,” her oldest sister cooed, swirling wine in her cup.

Her husband chuckled beside her.

Sybil’s jaw twitched.

That tone.

That mocking disbelief.

They didn’t believe her.

Not a single one of them truly believed that Azel Thorne, the Sword Saint’s prodigious son… the man with talent, fame, and the looks to break nations would want her.

They were here to watch her embarrassment unfold.

‘Just show up,’ Sybil begged silently, fingers tightening on her dress. ‘Just walk through that door and prove these bitches wrong.’

Maids moved across the table serving the first round of a dish.

“Well,” her second sister said with a pitying smile, “seems like your man isn’t going to show. Come on, Sy—”

The head butler burst into the dining hall, he was trembling.

“Clan Head! Mr. Azel Thorne is requesting to enter!”

The entire room froze.

The Clan Head shot to his feet with terrifying force.

“YOU FOOL!” he roared, jabbing a finger in the butler’s direction. “Why have you not let him in already?!”

“W-we had to verify his identity, sir,” the butler squealed. “We didn’t believe he was real until he presented—”

“LET. HIM. IN!”

The butler sprinted out like his life depended on it.

Moments later…

Azel walked in.

And the entire Astra clan audibly forgot how to breathe.

He stepped through the doors in a white noble suit tailored to perfection.

His silver hair was tied back and slightly tousled, and his eyes swept across the table politely before settling on Sybil.

He looked like royalty.

No… he seriously looked like the protagonist of the entire world.

“Oh… am I late?” Azel asked casually.

The women and several men, who were butlers and maids, nearly melted on the spot.

Maids rushed to guide him to his seat beside Sybil, and he followed with elegant posture, greeting them all with a polite nod.

As soon as he sat down, the Clan Head regained his senses and forced a shaky smile.

“W-Welcome to the Astra household, Mr. Thorne. My deepest apologies for the poor reception at the gate. The guards only wished to confirm your identity.”

“Of course, Father-in-law.” Azel said smoothly, sending shockwaves down the entire table.

Every feminine heart detonated.

Every jaw dropped.

Sybil squeaked.

“I actually appreciate that they checked,” Azel continued. “No one except me should be here for my darling.”

He placed a hand gently atop Sybil’s head and stroked her hair with surprising tenderness.

Sybil… Astra City’s resident menace shrank like a kitten and trembled bright red under his touch.

“I… y-yes…” she whispered, her voice embarrassingly soft. “I missed you.”
