Chapter 395: In Your Hands
“Ah… you’re leaving again?” Edna asked softly.
Dinner had ended not too long ago, and the last traces of warmth from it were still in the air.
The plates were stacked beside the sink, the table was still messy with cups and crumbs, and the house smelled of cooked vegetables and spices.
Veyra had wanted meat but there wasn’t any where she was currently interested in buying meat from in the town; their meat was soggy ss hell.
It was a peaceful domestic evening… the kind of moment Azel never truly had time to appreciate before.
Lunch earlier had been lively.
Rene had joined the family, sitting in a chair between Isolde and Medusa.
His so-called “bad luck curse” hadn’t shown the slightest bit all day.
There was no collapsing shelves, no dropped plates, and no sudden accidents.
It was peaceful, but as usual peace with Azel turned to stress.
“Yes,” Azel finally answered, straightening his coat. “I’ve been called over to Astra City to meet up with—”
“Oh?” Veyra cut in immediately, narrowing her eyes. “That girl who was clinging onto you at the Academy?”
Azel blinked, unsure which one she meant, but Veyra continued confidently.
“She can wait her turn. Right, Anya?”
Anya, who had been taking a sip of water, almost spat it out from shock.
“C-completely,” she blurted, red-faced.
Azel stifled a laugh as he moved around the table.
He kissed Edna on the cheek first; she smiled softly, happy but worried as well.
He ruffled Isolde’s hair next, making the little girl giggle as she reached out to grab him but he pulled away before she trapped his fingers with her tiny hands.
She was too cute to play with, he was stared of staying forever.
He kissed Meda’s forehead and rested his hand gently on her stomach.
Medusa flushed deeply.
He stopped before Veyra, cupped her jaw, and gave her a slow peck on the lips.
For a moment her jealousy melted entirely, replaced with a crimson blush.
“Please be safe,” she whispered. “And don’t get yourself killed again.”
“You’re talking like I die every week,” Azel muttered. “It was once.”
Still, he tugged at her cheeks gently before moving to Anya.
She sat up straighter, clearly expecting a kiss on the lips. But instead…
Azel leaned in and kissed her nose.
“My… nose?” she whispered, she was completely stunned.
“Hm? It’s cute.” He kissed it again.
Anya’s face went crimson.
Azel ran his fingers through her ponytail, removed the hairband, and let her hair fall around her shoulders. “You’re cuter with it down, Ani.”
Her breath hitched. “A-ah… I like it down too, my prince… I was trying something new.”
Azel patted her head affectionately before summoning Lillia with an outstretched hand.
“Don’t you want to give Daddy some good luck cuddles?”
Lillia appeared instantly on him, hugging him tightly around the neck.
“Be home soon, papa.” Then she vanished again, leaving behind sparkles.
Feng, who had been standing near the door, witnessed all of this with awe.
‘Master handles multiple women like he’s breathing,’ he thought. ‘He truly is the greatest man alive.’
Azel nodded toward him. “Feng. Outside. There’s something I need you to do.”
They stepped out into the quiet night.
The door shut behind them, muffling the sound of the women chatting inside.
The cool air brushed their skin and a few late insects chirped from the bushes.
Azel turned to him with seriousness in his eyes.
“I need you to take care of something important.”
Feng bowed deeply. “Your wish is my command, Master.”
“Are you aware of the Holy Church in this town?”
“Yes,” Feng said. “I know the general direction, but I haven’t—”
“The Priest must be there right now,” Azel cut in. “I want you to go kill him.”
Feng stiffened. “Kill… him?”
“Yes. He’s working on something… a disease that will kill everyone in the Empire if it spreads.”
The words hit Feng like cold water.
“A disease?” he repeated.
“Yes,” Azel said firmly. “Something on the scale of what happened at the Academy. Maybe worse. Tonight, I want you to stop it.”
Feng swallowed hard. “Yes, Master.”
“Hide your face. Kill the Priest. And if any Church members are there, they’re part of it too.”
Azel stepped past him. “Kill them as well.”
Feng nodded slowly. Azel walked off toward the road, heading for Astra City.
“Remember,” Azel said without turning back, “the fate of everything hangs on your shoulders.”
Feng looked down at his hands.
‘I’ve never actually killed someone before.’
But he had no room for hesitation.
…
An hour later, Inside the church, the Priest was humming softly to himself as he worked.
‘Just a few more weeks now,’ he thought.
He stood at the altar, admiring the large vial of gas resting atop it.
The glass glowed in the dim candlelight.
“If there were several mages in this town,” he murmured smugly, “I wouldn’t stand a chance.”
The altar itself was not holy.
It was the shaped corpse of a Rank 3 monster, carefully carved and wrapped with decorative cloth to disguise the grotesque surface beneath.
Worshippers knelt before it every day, offering prayers and placing drops of their blood into the bowl he provided.
The blood funneled through hidden channels, mixing into the giant bottle beneath the altar.
Human blood.
Monster blood.
Chemical agents.
Dark reagents.
All fused into a developing plague.
‘These fools will believe anything,’ the Priest smiled. ‘This formula can wipe out a great deal of the Empire. Once it spreads through the air, they won’t even know they’re infected.’
He gazed lovingly at the vial of swirling vapors.
‘And I have the antidote. I’ll survive. I’ll rise above the chaos. When the Empire collapses, only I will remain… and I will rule.’
He lifted a hand.
“Larry.”
One of his hooded assistants stepped forward. “Sir?”
“Get the cow bloo—”
SHICK.
The sound was clean and sharp.
Larry froze mid-step with his eyes wide.
A spear tip jutted out of his forehead.
His mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Then he toppled forward, making his skull split on the stone floor.
Brain matter splattered across the ground in a wet, horrific mess.
“L-Larry?!” the Priest gasped.
The other three assistants backed away in terror.
Behind Larry’s falling corpse stood Feng who was masked and wearing a cloak
He stared at the blood running down the blade and his hand shook.
‘This… this is my first time killing a human.’
