Chapter 378: Coming Clean
“They’ve already infiltrated the underground…” Luke’s voice was tight with frustration.
“The underground?” Rain asked, blinking. “What’s there?”
She’d never even heard of this place before… even in her past life.
“It’s a vault,” Luke said, frowning. “A place where the Empire stores artifacts too dangerous for the Royal Treasury. Only the Principal and a few others know about it.”
Another voice came from the corner of the room.
“It’s already too late,” Torrent said.
Rain turned toward him and froze.
He wasn’t a child anymore.
His body had grown and his features were sharper now, his once-boyish face maturing into something closer to her own age.
“It’s usually guarded by a group of elite soldiers and mages,” Torrent continued, his voice sounding grim. “But my guess? They’re all dead and the Perpetrator has the cursed band.”
Luke exhaled slowly. “You’re growing again… that means your mana’s returning.”
“Yes,” Torrent said, “though it probably won’t mean much. The woman who attacked the residential sector was Vera… we used to date a long time ago but it seems that she doesn’t remember me anymore.”
Rain frowned. “Vera?”
“She was a swordswoman once,” Torrent said. “Now her arms and legs are cursed. She’s powerful… too powerful right now. Her clones managed to take out one of mine.”
“I see…” Luke muttered.
He rubbed his temples. “This is worse than we thought. There are more attackers than expected.”
Torrent nodded. “Much more.”
Luke straightened his robes and turned toward the door. “We’ll gather the rest of the professors for a meeting. We need strategy, not panic.”
He paused at the doorway, glancing back at Rain.
“It’s late. The main barrier is still stable, so you can rest for tonight. We’ll regroup at dawn.”
Rain nodded slightly, though her eyes stayed on the glowing orb.
Before he left, Luke’s voice softened. “Rain…”
She looked up.
“Don’t blame yourself for what happened,” he said. “If not for your warning, we’d have lost the entire residential area. You saved lives today.”
Then he left with Torrent.
Rain stood still for a moment before letting out a long breath.
The office felt suffocatingly quiet now. She left the office and closed the door, watching magic glow around it as it sealed shut.
She turned and walked down the dim corridor.
[How did they even find out that you came from the future?] Nyala asked Rain, her voice was full of irritation… she had been searching everywhere for Azel’s soul but she hadn’t found it.
Rain pressed her lips together. ‘The person leading this attack figured it out from how I acted. I wasn’t careful enough.’
[So basically, your fault.]
Rain sighed. ‘Yes.’
[You really are dumb.]
She couldn’t even argue… Nyala wasn’t wrong but wasn’t she being a lot harsher than usual?
‘Now they all know,’ she thought miserably.
[Why does that matter? Weren’t you and the other girls all… what’s the term again? The hero’s girlfriends?]
Rain’s eyebrows twitched. ‘We weren’t girlfriends. We were rivals.’
[Rivals?]
‘We were all competing for his affection. Even when we were friends, it was still a competition.’
[And you lost?]
‘We all lost,’ Rain whispered internally. ‘Every single one of us.’
[So what now? Planning to come clean?]
‘They deserve to know,’ Rain said, turning a corner toward the alchemy wing. ‘And maybe, if I’m honest, they’ll stay away from Reinhardt too.’
[Reinhardt, huh. You still care about him?]
Rain didn’t reply.
She reached the end of the hall and stopped before a wooden door.
‘I think I finally understand him now,’ she thought. ‘Why fix a problem when you can destroy it? Why try to save people when someone else can sacrifice themselves for you?’
Her hand twisted the knob.
She stepped inside.
The alchemy classroom had been cleared out and the desks were pushed to the sides.
Everyone was already there, waiting for her.
Esme stood near the front, fidgeting nervously. Her eyes flickered toward Rain the moment she walked in.
Charlotte leaned against a table with her arms crossed.
Sybil floated lazily in the air as if reclining on invisible wind, her legs crossed as she tried to sense Azel’s mana.
Flare sat with her arms folded.
And beside her stood Sylvia who looked as elegant as ever.
Rain’s eyes narrowed.
‘Fucking elf bitch,’ she thought as she shut the door behind her.
Everyone turned.
“Thanks for coming, Rain,” Esme said, clearing her throat. “We… need answers. This time, no half-truths.”
The room quieted.
All eyes were on Rain.
She sighed and brushed a strand of blond hair behind her ear, her fingers trembling slightly.
“What Velkin said… it’s true,” she said. “I’m from the future.”
Charlotte straightened immediately. “You mean… you actually came back from the future?”
Rain nodded slowly. “I died there. And then I woke up here.”
Before anyone could speak further, Sybil zipped through the air, landing right in front of her.
“Wait. Forget all that time-travel stuff for a sec.” She pointed a finger at Rain. “Do I marry Azel in the future?”
“Huh?” Rain blinked.
“You heard me,” Sybil pressed. “Do. I. Marry. Him?”
Rain blinked again, trying to process the question. “I… don’t think I saw Azel in my past life.”
Sybil’s mouth fell open. “You what?”
“The Sword Saint only had a daughter,” Rain said. “I never met Azel in the past.”
“Maybe you were blind.”
Rain frowned. “That’s not—”
Sybil floated a bit closer. “Because if you’re saying I didn’t end up with him, that means I picked someone else. So who was it?”
Rain groaned softly. “This isn’t what we’re here for—”
“Who was it?” Sybil repeated, eyes narrowing.
Rain exhaled. “…Reinhardt.”
The air left the room in an instant.
“HUH?!”
The synchronized outburst shook the windows.
Flare nearly fell off her seat, Charlotte dropped her calm entirely, and even Esme’s jaw dropped open.
“You mean that Reinhardt?” Flare asked, her voice was dripping disbelief. “The one who talks like he’s a goddamn prince every time he opens his mouth?”
Rain nodded quietly. “That one. We all dated him…”
Sylvia crossed her arms. “You’re saying we… all dated him?”
Rain’s shoulders tensed. “Yes. Every single one of us in this room.”
There was a stunned pause.
Sybil’s floating stopped completely. “You’ve got to be joking.”
“I wish I was,” Rain said softly.
“Okay, wait.” Charlotte rubbed her temples. “How? When? Why would I… no, we… date that idiot?!”
Rain didn’t answer right away.
She looked at each of them.
She swallowed. “Because in that life… he was the hero.”
The room went quiet again.
“The chosen one. The man destined to save the world,” she continued. “We followed him because we believed in him. Because he made us believe in something.”
Her eyes lowered. “But in the end, he used us for our bodies and led us to our deaths.”
