Chapter 363: Reasons To Love
It hurt Sybil’s heart to do it.
To look him in the eyes and tell him not to see her again.
She’d done it to “set him free” but now that the words had left her mouth, she felt like she’d broken something sacred inside her.
She pressed a hand to her chest as the ache grew.
‘But what if I was forcing myself on him?’ she thought. ‘Did he ever even like me back?’
“Hey calm down… There must be a reason you like Azel other than his body and power, right?”
Her mind drifted to his rare genuine smile… The one that made her stomach flutter and her chest feel warm.
“Yes…” she whispered to herself. “But I can’t describe it.”
She turned to Esme, who was still seated beside her bed, listening patiently.
“I need to do more research,” Sybil said.
“Good,” Esme replied, her expression growing softer. “Even if you plan to use him to escape your marriage with Reinhardt… you should at least tell him the truth.”
That made Sybil pause and her eyes lifted toward Esme.
“Hey, Esmeralda.”
“Hm?”
Sybil smiled… a real one, small but bright. “Thank you. You’re a great friend.”
The sunlight pouring in from the window caught in her green hair, turning it into a soft halo. Esme blinked, caught off guard by the sight.
“Uh… sure,” she said awkwardly.
“Can you help me do one last thing?”
Esme tilted her head. “Sure, but classes aren’t over yet.”
“Settle things with the nurse,” Sybil said as she stood. “I need to go do research.”
Before Esme could respond, Sybil opened the window.
“Wait—what are you—”
Sybil spread her wings of compressed wind, smiled one last time, and jumped.
The gust that followed rattled the curtains.
Esme blinked. “Did she just… leave?”
…
Sybil landed gracefully in front of the Resonant Library, the largest building in the eastern wing of the Academy.
She took a deep breath.
‘I know I love Azel… but I can’t explain how..’
Her eyes burned with determination.
‘I hate the way I talked to him… but as long as I can find the reasons… the real reasons… I’m not wasting his time.’
A maid standing by the entrance looked up at her and whispered.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in class, young lady?”
“I…” Sybil froze, unsure what to say.
The maid sighed and waved a hand. “Never mind. I’m sure you have a free period or something. What kind of book are you looking for? Or are you here to lounge around again like last time?”
Sybil leaned forward, lowering her voice. “I want a book… on love.”
The maid blinked, then smiled as she noticed how the girl’s fingers were trembling.
“Novels?”
Sybil shook her head. “No. I want to know what love is.”
That made the maid smile even more. “Come with me.”
She guided Sybil through the tall shelves to a smaller section near the back.
“These are the good ones,” the maid whispered, pulling several volumes down from the shelves. “Try these first.”
“Thank you.”
As Sybil took the stack, the maid tilted her head. “You’re trying to get that boy you came here with last time?”
Sybil hesitated. “Yes. My emotions are… complicated. I don’t want to waste his time.”
The maid smiled knowingly. “Then I hope these help.”
Sybil sat at one of the empty tables and spread the books out.
She opened the first book.
[You’re probably a girl picking this up because you want to understand love, right? Maybe you want to win over the guy of your dreams.]
Her eyes widened.
‘It’s crazy how accurate this is,’ she thought.
She flipped to the next paragraph.
[Well, I hope you haven’t buried your relationship yet—]
Her throat tightened.
‘I told him I didn’t want to see him again…’
Tears stung her eyes and she bit her lip hard enough to taste iron.
‘No… I can fix it.’
She turned the page again.
[Love is not attraction, nor admiration, nor desire. Love is understanding. It’s the willingness to see another person’s flaws and still find peace in their presence. It’s the ache that pushes you to want their happiness, even when it hurts you. It’s a language spoken through small actions, through patience, through care.]
Sybil’s hand trembled as she read.
[Love is not in appearances or strength. It’s in kindness. In the way someone looks at you like you’re enough. In the way they stand by you, not above you. It’s in the moments between words… where silence feels safe.]
Her breath caught.
‘So… that’s love?’ she thought with her heart pounding. ‘Then what I feel for him… that’s it. It has to be.’
Her hands shot up suddenly. “Excuse me…”
The maid hurried over with an alarmed face. “Is the book not good?”
Sybil shook her head quickly. “Please, can I have some paper and a pen? I want to write something down.”
“O-of course.”
The maid fetched them.
…
Hours passed and the sun sank behind the towers of the academy, casting golden light through the high windows.
Students had long gone home.
Her table was littered with open books, notes, and little scribbles.
Every few minutes she would pause, staring out the window with a soft smile before writing again.
She was no longer confused.
By the time the moonlight replaced the sun, Sybil stood and gathered her papers.
‘I know why I love him now,’ she thought.
She ran through the corridors, the only sounds that could be heard were her shoes clacking against marble.
The night breeze whipped at her hair as she burst out the main doors and took flight toward the dormitory area.
The first-year dorms were quiet, most students already asleep or buried in homework.
Sybil landed softly in front of a small mansion… the residence of the first-year representative.
She clutched the papers tightly against her chest.
‘Please be Azel. Please be Azel…’
She knocked on the door nervously.
Moments later, the door opened but it wasn’t him.
A silver-haired woman in a black maid uniform stood there instead.
“Yes?” she asked calmly. “What reason do you have for knocking this late? My prince didn’t mention any visitors.”
The word “prince” made Sybil’s head spin.
“M-my name is Sybil Astra,” she stammered. “I’m Azel’s… friend from school. I really need to show him something. Please.”
There was silence.
Then, from behind the maid, a familiar voice spoke.
“Thanks, Anya. I can take it from here.”
Azel stepped forward.
Anya gave him a slight bow and retreated back inside as he closed the door behind him.
The night air was cool and Sybil’s heart thudded in her chest.
“I thought you said you didn’t want to talk to me anymore,” Azel said with a smile.
“I… I…” She swallowed hard, her nerves shaking her voice. “I love you.”
Azel blinked. “…Weird.”
He crossed his arms. “What kind of girl tells someone she loves to never see her again?”
“I—” Sybil stuttered and fumbled for the papers she’d been holding. “I can explain!”
Her hands shook as she unfolded it.
“I wrote down the reasons I love you,” she said quickly. “I spent the whole day trying to find the right words. I couldn’t memorize everything, so I’ll just read—”
Before she could finish, the paper vanished from her hands and appeared in Azel’s.
“Hey! No fair!”
She hovered slightly off the ground, trying to grab it back, her face red as a tomato.
Azel turned away from her attempts, using his shoulder to block her while scanning the page.
His lips curved into a grin as he read the messy handwriting… they were bullet points mixed with scribbles and crossed-out lines.
He chuckled.
“Cute,” Azel said.
