Chapter 283: Burned Alive…
The cage closest to them began to rattle.
Azel turned his head just in time to see movement inside it.
The pale human within pressed both palms and feet against the floor and crawled out like an insect, spine bending at unnatural angles as it dragged itself forward… Azel couldn’t tell if it was a man or woman, that was how bad it looked.
When the creature’s head finally pushed past the bars, its neck cracked, twisting sideways in an inhuman angle and staring directly at them.
‘I see,’ Azel thought quietly.
He now understood why there were no gang members guarding the inner part of the lab.
There was no need for guards when the test subjects themselves were turned into monsters.
The creature stood up with it’s body trembling.
Its bones creaked as it took a step, and then another.
Its dull gray eyes locked directly on Ravik. With a shrill gasp, the thing ran… each step pounding against the ground and it’s bones snapped but it never stopped running.
It didn’t make it far.
Ravik’s tail slammed down like a hammer.
The thick fur-covered appendage crushed the creature against the floor, its skull bursting under the weight.
Ravik had used a partial transformation just for his tail.
But that one wasn’t alone.
More cages began to open with loud clangs, and countless pale hands reached through the bars.
Bodies crawled out… men, women, even children from what he could see.
They moved with a jerky broken rhythm like machines.
Azel could finally see the scale of it.
Hundreds of people filled the chamber, spilling from the cages like water from a cracked dam.
“Erblim,” Azel said, eyes scanning the crowd, “if you will.”
The crow flapped his wings from Azel’s shoulder. “Should I tear them all, Master?”
Azel raised his hand.
“No, wait.” He paused, thinking quickly. “Just knock them out. Hit them hard enough to keep them down but not dead. Someone’s bound to come here soon… these things can be our distraction.”
Erblim sighed in frustration. ‘I wish I hadn’t pressed that red button…’
He shot into the air regardless, his black feathers spreading out as his form blurred.
He moved faster than a bullet, smashing into the first few monsters and sending them flying.
Every time his wings struck, a gust of wind blasted outward, sweeping away rows of creatures.
They tumbled to the ground, unconscious but still alive.
Ravik handled the rest behind them, and he wasn’t killing them either… he was just knocking them aside, making a path.
Azel studied the map again, his eyes darting from one marked corridor to the next.
After a few seconds, he folded the paper and tucked it away. “Alright, let’s go. I know where it is now.”
He led the way forward.
Ravik and Erblim followed close behind.
The deeper they went, the more massive the lab seemed.
There were glass cylinders and tanks everywhere, glowing faintly blue from the strange liquid inside.
Each tank contained a figure floating in suspension… were they experimenting on something other than Exotin?
Ravik destroyed every machine they passed.
His claws tore through metal and glass alike making fluids splatter across the ground.
Erblim flew overhead, planting paper bombs on the walls and dropping bottles of resin at every corner on Azel’s orders.
Azel moved fast, but even then he could feel the tremors under his feet.
The alarms had gone silent, which only meant the lockdown was over.
Someone was already at the door.
He didn’t care though.
They had reached the heart of the facility.
The final section looked like any other wall but according to the map, this was the “vault,” where the main Exotin was stored, once he got this main one, he would destroy the lab so they wouldn’t get any more…
Azel turned to Ravik. “The arm.”
Ravik handed him Ranal’s severed hand. It was pale now and the blood had long dried.
Azel pressed it against the wall.
Immediately, cracks of light spread across the surface, forming a crescent pattern.
The wall rippled like water before crumbling away to reveal a sealed metallic box hidden within.
“So this is it,” Azel murmured.
He knelt slightly, tracing the strange marks carved along the box’s edges. “The heart of their operation.”
He grabbed the handle and pulled.
The box didn’t resist… it clicked softly and opened just enough for him to touch it. In a flash of light, the entire object vanished into his inventory.
Azel exhaled and straightened up, dusting off his hands. “Alright, we’re done here.”
Erblim swooped down to perch on his shoulder again, his feathers were ruffled a bit but he was still good.
Ravik joined them, tail fading as his transformation receded.
Then came the sound of growls from the monsters… screams followed next.
The noise of tearing flesh got closer and closer to them.
A shadow burst from the wreckage.
It slid to a stop in front of them with her claws scraping the metal floor.
Terisha.
Her body was unrecognizable.
Most of her crimson skin had been burned away, leaving only patches of red among black charred flesh.
Her right eye was swollen shut, dripping with blood. Of the five limbs that sprouted from her head, two were gone… melted into lifeless stumps.
The remaining three twitched violently as if struggling to move.
She looked like a monster trying to hold itself together.
“Ba… bastard…” Her voice was hoarse.
Each word she spoke sounded painful. “Because of you… Ranal died…”
Azel raised an eyebrow. “Who’s Ranal?”
He wasn’t being sarcastic, He genuinely didn’t know her name.
But then Terisha’s gaze fell to his hand… where he still held the severed limb of her colleague.
Rage consumed her entirely.
Her good eye glowed bright red as the limbs on her head extended outward, trembling with fury.
“AZELLLLLL!”
The entire room seemed to shake as she screamed.
The metal walls rattled, the ground trembled, and smoke curled from the tips of her extended limbs.
Azel sighed and gave her a smile. “Ready for part two?”
She hesitated, clearly confused by the calm in his voice.
Azel snapped his fingers. “Boom.”
For a moment, there was silence.
Then the world erupted.
The explosions began from behind her… massive blasts that tore through the lab.
The paper bombs ignited first, each one releasing a concussive wave of heat and then the resin bottles were next, coating the machines in flames that spread like wildfire.
The blast was blinding.
Fire raced across the walls and ceiling, turning the entire lab into an inferno.
Terisha’s scream was swallowed by the explosion.
The shockwave tore through her body, throwing her backward into the raging flames.
The limbs on her head ignited like torches.
She was being burned alive… for a second time today!
