Chapter 280: I Have A Mouth… Yet I Cannot Scream
‘I knew the spells I got from Nyala would come in handy.’
Azel thought as they followed behind the demon lady.
He never really thought he would be able to use the grimoire he got from the Saintess so soon but then again… Fate operated in different ways.
The spell not only cloaked them but it also muted their steps, making even the crunch of stones beneath their boots vanish into nothingness.
As long as they didn’t move enough to make the rocks slide, they were fine… for now at least, he was ready to fight if they were found out though.
‘But I’m wondering… why would they use the explosives?’
His mind couldn’t let that go.
They were underground… deep enough that the air felt very cold.
Weren’t these people supposed to be careful not to make the whole place collapse?
One wrong vibration and the earth itself could bury them alive. A lot of miners had died that way.
Still, he wondered where this woman had come from.
And what he did to her and her sister? Why did she hate him so much…?
The three-eyed woman walked in front, she was completely silent except for the small sniffles she let out.
She reached the far end of the corridor… the same wall where Ravik had thrown the door earlier, the door laid buried under some rocks now, The demon pressed her hand against the stone.
A glowing crescent mark spread all over the wall and it pulsed… as if it was alive.
The wall glowed, then began to fade, dissolving into thin air until a long hallway stretched beyond it.
She walked through it without hesitation.
Azel, Ravik, and Erblim who was on his Master’s shoulder now, followed close behind, and as soon as the last of them stepped through, the wall solidified again… sealing them in.
Azel looked ahead.
This corridor was completely different than the other.
It was bright and torches lined the walls.
Dozens of people were moving around… the gang members, some were carrying guns, others loading crates or cleaning their weapons.
The chatter of so many people here at once was really loud.
‘So this is their main base…’
Erblim’s voice sounded in Azel’s mind.
‘I can sense two powerful presences in this place, Master… One feels like Ravik, so it might be a werewolf and the other one is a human.’
“I see…” Azel whispered and his eyes narrowed.
The demon woman continued forward, not once looking back. “Let’s keep following.”
The hallway twisted and branched in multiple directions, wide enough to hold small carts and piles of supplies.
Azel couldn’t help but wonder how long it had taken to build a place like this beneath the town.
It must have taken years… and thousands of hands. Plus, they were pretty far away from the Empire too so the Empire couldn’t be aware.
Pipes lined the ceiling, and from them, it seemed water came from above. This place was really well thought out.
‘I wonder if I can take it over as a bunker or something.’
Somewhere up ahead, someone was laughing.
“Oho, if it isn’t our Head Manager of Exotin.”
A mocking voice sounded through the air.
Azel and Ravik slowed down immediately.
From the opposite end of the hall, another woman appeared.
At first glance she looked human but as she stepped closer, that illusion fell apart.
Her skin was a deep crimson, glowing under the torchlight, and from her head sprouted five small limbs, twitching like hungry snakes.
‘Are demons actually this easy to find?’ Azel thought.
In the game, demons were rare… you couldn’t encounter one outside the Demon Realm or during one of the calamities caused by them.
But right now… they were showing up one after another.
“How’s your sister?” the red-skinned woman sneered.
Her voice had a playful tone that made the insult worse. “Hehe~ oh wait, I forgot… she was killed in the explosion.”
The three-eyed woman froze.
Her lip trembled.
“Terisha… there’s no need for this,” she said quietly with her teeth clenched. “It’s all that man’s fault… Azel’s fault but he’s dead now. I’m better.”
“Are you?” Terisha’s smile faded into a thin line. “I really hope you are.”
The demon brushed past her, her crimson tail flicking lazily behind her.
The three-eyed woman inhaled sharply and continued walking.
Her pace was faster now and her shoulders were completely stiff.
They trailed her through another turn, then down a longer stretch of hallway that ended at an ornate door… it was one far larger and more polished than the others.
She pressed her hand against it.
Like before, the surface glowed and melted away, this time, revealing a large office within.
They stepped inside and the door closed once again.
The office was surprisingly elegant for a gang hideout… tall shelves stacked with files and bottles, a desk carved from real wood, and a rug with foreign embroidery covering the floor.
The woman sighed and began removing her coat. But before she could finish, a cold blade kissed her neck.
“Alright,” Azel whispered in her ear. “Start speaking, or I’ll cut off your head.”
The illusion of safety shattered instantly.
The cloaking spell faded, and the three of them… Azel, Ravik, and Erblim appeared behind her like ghosts emerging from air.
Her body stiffened.
“Are you… Azel?”
Her eyes began to glow… and mana was gathering in them, if she had a few more seconds, she would be able to cast a spell that could disorient him.
However fate was not on her side as he moved first.
The bon knife flashed once.
Steel met flesh and the tip buried itself into one of her three eyes.
The moment the blade pierced it, she convulsed.
Her scream tore through the air but the sound was gone before it left her throat.
She dropped to her knees, twitching, clutching her face as dark, inky blood spilled from the ruined eye.
Her body trembled violently…
She had a mouth… It was working properly… If she managed to scream, she could get help yet no matter how hard she tried to scream, her throat failed her and there was no noise.
It was like something straight out of a horror drama.
