- Chapter 692 - 692 The Young Slave Vivi
692: The Young Slave Vivi 692: The Young Slave Vivi Nermin’s question went unanswered, as Ryuji glanced at the young girl, who resembled Gretta in looks.
The oni were a special type of eastern demon skilled in either magic or physical abilities, different from the balanced western demons; they were closer to specialists who favoured one over the other.
“V….Vivi….
my name is Vivi.” A natural demon watched him with her big eyes that gleamed with a mixture of worry, fear and expectation. ‘It’s my first time meeting a natural demon.’ What confused him a little was her atmosphere, and the aura of her mana resembled Nerim’s, or rather, the Siren-type mana she taught him about.
It wasn’t raging or ferocious like a storm, but flowing and gentle like a river. Ryuji never considered the effect or the reason for this difference in mana before.
Instead, he extended his hand and gently nudged her plump, squishy cheeks.
“Do you wish to be free of this collar Vivi?” Because everything happened so fast, Ryuji didn’t ask or consider her opinion since they met and only now did he start to see his mistakes towards the spirits, and this young girl, not much older than his eldest daughter.
‘The way she’s so prickly reminds me of Tsukihana when hungry.’ Growl~ The girl’s stomach growled.
It was a long and exaggerated growl.
“Hauuu…” Vivi let out a cute groan as she turned bright red.
“Nerim, can you ask the innkeepers wife to make a soft, soup, preferably without cream and tell her it’s for someone who has a weak stomach?” “Of course I can, Ryuji.” Nerim glanced between Ryuji, the man she’d started to open up to, and the strange girl and shook her head.
She watched Vivi until she left the room, with the door slamming shut with a thud. “Jealous of a child….” “Vivi isn’t a baby!” He glanced down at her face, and the fierce thief glared back at him as if ready to enter battle with him.
To avoid such a situation, he reached for her collar.
“I made a promise, I will save you Vivi.” “Put it in words.
Can’t trust the scary Uncle!” The bizarre situation of a tiny girl knowing such phrases made Ryuji’s legs weaken as his attitude when dealing with her crumbled ever so slightly. Time slowly passed, as the second bowl of soup rattled on the table, Vivi burped and then closed her eyes with a content huff of garlic and chicken-flavoured air.
Not only that, but the years of dirt and grime now floated in the washing basket that Nerim purchased for herself, only to use it to scrub the little demon clean.
“Thanks, pretty sister and handsome Uncle!” “So, can you tell me now, why you were doing such dangerous things and where you come from?” “Hmm~~~” The girl tapped her cheek before grabbing the broken chain with her hand.
“Uncle seems to have forgotten something.” “…This little shit.” He coughed up blood.
“You better not run off when I do!” “Yes~ Vivi will be a good girl.” Ryuji’s patience, which appeared to be running thin on the outside, was actually not even tested; he found the way she moved, reacted and spoke just like his cheeky daughters when their mothers weren’t around.
Thus, he found it calming…
even the raging Abyssal energy in his limbs became soothed.
‘This girl is special!
I cannot let her suffer anymore.’ He planned to have Gretel take care of her, but there were obvious issues with this plan, and he wasn’t deluded enough to think there weren’t…
But before he could settle his mind, Vivi tugged at his sleeve with none of her earlier bravado on display.
“Uncle…
aren’t you going to help?” Once again, the little con artist fluttered her eyelashes.
‘This kid!’ The question dealt a significant blow as he paused for a moment, while caught off guard by her small and vulnerable voice.
She’d grown up in the slums and lived as a slave; if she couldn’t do this much, then even Ryuji might have given up.
She could use and control her emotions, and observing people so well was a huge selling point.
He closed his eyes and ignored her rude actions or her clear plotting.
The child wasn’t old enough to be judged or blamed for learning such methods.
“I’ll keep you safe, so don’t worry, little one.” Nerim shifted uncomfortably while watching the strange transformation of the man she thought she knew, his movements when saving her and the ability to fly, nothing compared to the level he showed in the dungeon. Ryuji also realised that using magic and his tendrils to form fake wings was a push.
“Can we really trust her words?” Nerim asked while glancing at the small girl sitting on Ryuji’s lap, although she wanted to save the child first.
The situation and how everything suddenly fell into place made her unsettled.
“Yeah, we are.” He glanced back at Nerim’s knowing look and shrugged his shoulders.
He knew the meaning and understood the party might not accept it. Ryuji clicked his tongue and ate a small dumpling.
“Eat up, it’s getting cold.” Nerim’s cheeks dyed slightly pink as he offered her one of his half-eaten dumplings, before quickly capturing it in her lips and swallowing it whole.
“Vivi, we’ll be entering the auction, but can you tell me how dangerous it is right now?” She tilted her head while fluttering her lashes.
“What do you mean, Uncle?” “Those evil men, do you remember how many of them assembled around the slaves and kept you together?” He observed her every movement, the flicker of her eyelids, the flare of her nostrils, to find out the truth.
Vivi didn’t flinch this time.
She watched him carefully, as if testing whether he’d break his own word before they even finished.
When he didn’t, her shoulders sagged in a tiny breath as she counted using her fingers.
Nerim, however, remained more pragmatic about the situation, which Ryuji really appreciated, because he understood he was being too soft.
Nerim crossed her arms.
“If someone wants her badly enough to cause issues in the market then we need to know why.
And who.” “They already called themselves the Black Hand Gang.” Ryuji returned to Vivi, who drew small pictures with a piece of charcoal.
The faces she drew weren’t a masterpiece, but after facing the enemies behind them, it made more sense. “Are these the bad guys?” “Mhm, the ones who put the collar on Vivi and beat up all her friends.” Ryuji leaned closer to the crude drawings.
The proportions were shaky, the details messy, but the expressions and features of the three men were bright as day.
One with a wide mouth, sharp teeth, and flat eyes.
Another with a lump the size of a fist on his head, while the final bandit lacked his arm. ‘None of them match the trash I killed today!’ He glanced at Nerim, who shook her head.
“Okay, since those men are still around you sleep in this room with the big sister and me tonight.” Vivi nodded while mumbling to herself.
“They weren’t strong, but big…
and grabbed Vivi’s hair and clothes while threatening the other children when she escaped.
This time Vivi will win and set everyone free!” This time, neither Nerim nor Ryuji corrected nor doubted her words.
To this, the young demon seemed to have lowered her guard and stopped resisting their help and food, and climbed into the second bed and asked Nermin a favour.
“Sister, please don’t turn out the lights.” The pitter-patter of rain tapped the window as the flame flickered weakly in the firepit, while the room remained warm, filled with the gentle snores of a child. “Phew, she’s finally asleep?” “Yeah, the girl seems to have endured a horrible time.” Nerim peeked at Ryuji’s face as embers crackled, changing the colour and shadows.
“I’m just happy that the place she needs us to go is part of our current plans.” He didn’t finish his sentence because even Nerim understood it would be difficult to help others.
Ryuji rested his back against the wall, watching the slow rise and fall of Vivi’s chest as her breathing became deeper and less fake.
The tiny demon clutched the blanket with both hands, as though afraid it might vanish if she loosened her grip.
Her horns barely poked from her hair, softened by the dim firelight.
“Well, since the girl begged for help let’s do our best.” “Mm.” Nerim smiled and sat beside him with a nod.
“If not for Vivi, we wouldn’t know how many enemies awaited us and that the Black Hand Gang were related to the auction house and its dirty deals.
“Those collars aren’t cheap, it seems there is likely a mage helping them too.” A silence lingered between the couple’s discussions, how to help, what to do with Vivi when they go to the auction.
In the end, the two leaned against each other with the background pitter-patter of rain accompanying them.
Ryuji sighed.
“Well it feels nice to be counted on.” “We should also rest, to avoid mistakes tomorrow…
right?” With a Yawn, Nerim covered herself and Ryuji with a blanket and leaned her head on his shoulder.
She was much like Vivi and took advantage of the situation to get what she wanted.
With the two women sleeping, Ryuji just closed his eyes with a deeper sigh.
“These girls just keep causing me troubles.” As if to agree, the sky outside rumbled with thunder.
He took it as a warning for him to prepare for the worst.
