526: Captives IV 526: Captives IV Abject pain caused Athena’s eyes to brighten with unshed tears as she watched Zane take a seat on the chair that the standing guard had brought for him.  And yet she wondered that if she felt this hurt, what then would be Ewan’s fate?

How was he taking this betrayal?

Zane was one of his closest friends, oldest too, since they had been friends since they were kids.  She turned aside to look at her lover, her jaw tightening in pain afresh when she noted the sorrowful shock clouding his face, one mixed with disbelief and muted anger.

“Why?”  She heard the pain clearly in Ewan’s croaked voice, one that caused her heart to twist.

She wanted to hug him, wanted to comfort him, but her arms were tied, and so was his.  She looked at Zane, expecting an answer.

Yet, when he finally spoke, it was void of the bitterness that had been present in Antonio’s voice and Herbert’s.

It was resignation, like he had no choice.  But everyone did have a choice, right?

And Zane had made this, unpalatable as it was.

“Family, Ewan.

I’m sure you understand that.

Family first.”  Just that.

Nothing more.

No explanation or pleas for understanding.

No smirk even-just concrete aloofness.

“I do, Zane.” Ewan muttered, his brows drawing low.

“I just thought I was your family too.” Not a flinch or indication that Ewan’s emotion-ladened words had pierced the armour that was Zane.  In the course of the events that had happened since her return to the state, Athena had seen that behind the façade he presented to the world as a playboy, Zane could be as ruthless as a gangster when it called for it; he was just like Ewan, stone when they needed to be.  And now, she could see that version of it, that version that had been pruned by the gang.

Phantom was his code name.

And really, he had deceived them, made his real intent a ghost.

“Yes, but you are not blood, Ewan.

Never has been.”  Herbert looked over the moon, looking proud over his son’s words, when all Athena felt was disgust.

“Since when…” Ewan asked, masking the tremor in his voice.  What was the use of having his feelings out on display?  Yet, he couldn’t mask the pain overshadowing his heart.

How could Zane?  He had hated himself for thinking of the latter in terms of a traitor just days ago, yet here he was.  This Whitman family, that was out for him, for reasons he couldn’t understand.

What had he ever done wrong to them?  Their families had been close friends for a generation or thereabout.

What could have happened?

Herbert’s greediness, his mind readily supplied to him.

“Some days ago, before the court case, and the revelations that came with it…” Zane answered in that robotic voice of his.

“Yes, I told my father all about it.” Athena and Ewan shut their eyes, as if on cue, opening them later to glare at Zane.

“So, you know all about his evil deeds, and yet chose to side with him?” Athena.

“If your children did something bad, won’t you cover for them?” Zane asked, his expression flat.

Athena scowled, her lip curling.

“If they did something as evil as your father, I wouldn’t!

I would rather they face the consequences of their actions!

Have you considered the millions of lives lost?

Millions of families displaced because your father decided to play god with his greed and covetousness?” Zane shrugged, leaning back uncaringly.

“We make mistakes.

Surely, you didn’t think that my time at the gang, Ewan’s too, was to sing all day?

We killed, Athena.

What’s the difference?” Athena spat toward him, but the weak spittle that was more blood than anything else didn’t make the full journey.  She sucked in a sharp breath as she was rewarded with Ewan being belted twice on his back.

She clamped down on the rage, glaring at Zane’s unmoved face.

“Repentance is the difference.

I’m disappointed in you, Zane.

Reading the diary you wrote as a teen, I thought…” “Don’t finish that, Athena.

I’m not Ewan.

I’m not deluded by your beauty, nor do I want to get in your pants like Antonio and my father.” Sheer disgust wouldn’t let Athena speak.

He knew of his father’s fantasies?

“So, you were sent then to toy with me?” Zane shrugged, his face a dead mask.

“I believed you knew that.

If you didn’t, you are a fool, and I must have respected your intelligence too much.” “Zane!” Ewan screamed, straining against his binds, but Zane didn’t even spare his old friend a glance.

Instead, he asked his father about Kael.

Herbert pointed to the refrigerator, just beside Athena.

Athena’s brows furrowed, and when she connected the dots, she felt nauseous-so much so she bowed her head, but vomit wouldn’t come out, probably because there was nothing in her stomach.

If anything her bladder was crying for mercy and release.

If she didn’t use the restroom soon, her kidneys will suffer from it.

Well, that’s if she made it out of here alive.

“He was getting too rascal.

He released the memo about Ewan because he thought his father wasn’t alive, that Ewan was joking… that fool… imagine when I realized that was not so.

I had to kill him, and cut off his loud mouth.

Already I have buyers for his kidney.” Athena tried forcefully to maintain steady breathing, to make her mind stray from the truth before her.

Kael had been butchered and put into the refrigerator next to her.  Nausea rose up again-yet nothing came out.

And there was the way that the males were talking like it was nothing… it only served to inform Athena that really her time was near, that she might not see her family again, just as John wouldn’t see his son again.

John.

Was he still safe?

She hoped so.

She hadn’t checked on him for a while, on the agents that she had assigned to him.

“Well, I guess he deserved it.

He did talk a lot, and would have been a liability in the long run.” Zane spoke, drafting Athena’s attention to himself.  He paused, looked at Ewan then.

“Maybe, this will teach you to be humble, that you aren’t indestructible…” Antonio laughed, leaning forward with dark amusement.

“I agree with you, Zane.

He has always felt like a god among men, even back in college.” Athena frowned.

Even Zane turned to look at his colleague in crime.

“You knew him, even then?” Antonio sneered at Ewan, lips curling.

“Of course I did.

He stole my girlfriend.” Book 2 in DR series is out!!!
