Chapter 1630: Split in Darkness
The message from Harvey spread across the Underside like a shockwave. His voice had reached every corner of the underground world, echoing through the metallic speakers mounted high on the walls. For the Dark Guild members still engaged in the chaos, the message arrived at the worst possible moment, right in the middle of the intense battles against the Guild members who had descended to wipe them out.

The fighting everywhere was fierce and unpredictable, conflicts clashing back and forth like waves smashing against stone. Some Dark Guild members were barely managing to hold their ground. Others were struggling far more, especially when facing opponents who had taken powerful pills to boost their abilities. The enhanced strength of those individuals made them move like monsters, and even Dark Magic users found themselves pushed to the edge.

But strangely, in certain pockets of the Underside, the intensity of the battle had lessened. The Dark Guild fighters started noticing that the attackers were thinning out, fewer waves of enemies crashing against them. It almost felt like they had overcome the worst of the assault, that the most dangerous part was behind them.

But the war wasn’t over. Not even close.

And that was the moment Harvey’s message reached them, turning their temporary relief into dread, or, for some, into opportunity.

They suddenly had new orders.

“Things are getting intense!” one of the Dark Guild members shouted as he dodged an incoming strike. “Right, right, it looks like we’re finally able to fend them off. But there are a few stubborn ones left!”

“We have our answer though,” another Dark Guild member replied, excitement creeping into his voice. “If we take out the Underside, our Dark Magic will grow. Things will be different. We won’t ever need to hide under here again!”

For those who were struggling, Harvey’s order felt like a lifeline, a way out. A way to become strong enough to survive. A way to prove themselves worthy in the twisted hierarchy the Dark Guild lived under.

Some of them immediately broke away from the battlefield, turning their backs on the remaining attackers and sprinting toward the Shelters. They didn’t care how strange or suspicious it looked. They had a new purpose now. They attacked recklessly as they withdrew, cutting down their own enemies just enough to break free.

The people around them, dark mages, guild fighters, and Underside residents, stared after them in confusion.

Why were the Dark Guild retreating?

However, what many hadn’t realized was that every person in the Underside, even those who worked for Gizin, had also heard Harvey’s announcement. They heard it, but they didn’t expect the Dark Guild to actually follow through. They didn’t think they were that insane.

But they were.

And proof came sooner than expected.

Certain things began to change in horrific, unexpected ways. There were still small groups of Underside fighters who were helping the Dark Guild against the attackers, struggling together to survive. In one such group, an Underside resident and two Dark Guild members fought side by side. The Underside fighter blocked a strike meant for one of them.

But in the next moment, everything snapped.

One of the Dark Guild members lifted his hand. Dark energy coiled around his fingers, swirling with twisted intent. And then he fired directly into the back of the Underside ally who had just saved him.

A single dark pulse pierced straight through the man’s chest.

He collapsed to the floor without even a cry.

Almost instantly, the Dark Guild member felt his power rise, small at first, but undeniably there. The sensation of growth was intoxicating. Addictive. The feeling of his affinity strengthening, rising higher than it ever had in his life.

It wasn’t enough.

He needed more. Much more.

The hunger bloomed inside him like a living thing.

Elsewhere, something even more tragic unfolded. A group of Dark Guild members and a group of Underside residents had fought off a squad of attackers and survived together. They had protected each other, built trust in the middle of chaos, and were walking side by side toward safety. They thought they were done. They thought they had earned a moment of peace.

Then Harvey’s message reached them.

The Dark Guild members stopped walking.

They looked at each other. Their thoughts raced, their expressions shifting between fear and outrage.

“This is crazy,” one of them finally burst out. “We can’t just kill everyone in the Underside for the sake of our goal! If we go this far, then when does it stop? Even if we reach the top, even if we get the power we want, there will always be another excuse to do worse!”

“You have to st, ”

He never finished his sentence.

Hands rose around him in unison, hands belonging to his own comrades. Dark pulses fired from several angles, striking him all at once. His body fell silently to the dirt, consumed by the darkness he had once embraced.

A Dark Guild member who had just taken part in killing his ally shook his head.

“Having doubts now means you’ll have doubts later. And we’re doing everything we must for our future.”

Small rifts were beginning to form among the Dark Guild members themselves, tiny fractures between loyalty and morality. But these cracks were quickly sealed in blood. Every mage witnessed the consequences of speaking up. They saw what happened to those who hesitated.

Anyone who doubted the order would be eliminated.

So even if some of them were terrified… even if their conscience screamed at them… they had no choice but to follow. They could not afford to become the next corpse lying on the ground.

And so a massive flock of Dark Guild members began racing toward the shelters. Smaller groups merged with larger ones until they transformed into a swarm of robed figures, a sweeping, growing tide that rolled through the Underside with deadly intent.

Up ahead, the very first shelter came into view, along with Alen and his men standing guard outside.

They were ready.

Earth magic had been used to build thick barriers and short defensive walls around the entrance, forming a protective ring. Alen’s men stood behind them, gripping weapons, their eyes locked forward with grim determination.

As the Dark Guild horde came into view, Alen stepped forward and raised his voice so everyone could hear.

“I knew it! I knew this would happen!” he shouted. “But now we must fight harder than ever!”

His voice deepened, filled with purpose.

“We’re not just fighting for revenge! We’re not just fighting for the truth! Right now, we fight for what makes us strongest, we fight to protect the people behind us!”
