Chapter 218: Is That… Unicorns?!
As he walked, the tunnel seemed to stretch on for what felt like forever.
The rhythmic thud of hooves ahead kept growing louder, until it reverberated in Noah’s chest.
He slowed, mana quietly flowing into his senses.
The air shifted, and the stench of damp stone gave way to something faintly sweet, and almost floral.
Then the tunnel opened into another cavern.
Noah stepped inside and stopped.
They stood before him. The unbelievable sight that was a small herd of unicorns.
Their coats shimmered under the faint light of the bioluminescent moss, white as snow, and their horns glowed with a soft silver luminescence.
Their manes flowed like liquid starlight, hooves gleaming as they pawed at the ground.
They were… beautiful. Too beautiful.
Noah blinked, lowering his hand slightly. “What the hell?”
He had never heard of unicorns being inside monoliths.
They were creatures of legend. Symbols of purity and peace. Not apex predators. Not… this.
The lead unicorn lifted its head, golden eyes locking onto him.
For a moment, it simply stared. Then its horn blazed with light, and it charged.
Boom!
Noah barely sidestepped in time.
The horn speared through the air where his chest had been, a beam of silver mana following it.
The attack struck the cavern wall, detonating in a burst of light that sent rocks flying.
He didn’t hesitate again.
“Alright,” he muttered, drawing mana. “So you do belong here.”
He slammed a hand into the ground.
Frigid Hunger.
Frost exploded outward, coating the floor in ice, spreading toward the herd.
The unicorns danced back, hooves flashing. Their movements were graceful and organized, like they were dancing on water.
Before he could press the attack, three beams of light lanced toward him from different angles.
Noah threw up a quick Devour barrier. The light hit and vanished, the spell eating through it like smoke.
But the next instant, two unicorns were already upon him.
He ducked, sweeping his leg low.
One leapt gracefully over it, twisting in midair, while the other lowered its head, horn cutting through the air toward his face.
Noah flash stepped backward, reappearing behind them.
“Fast,” he muttered. “Too fast.”
He cast Void Bolt.
The compressed purple sphere screamed across the cavern.
The nearest unicorn twisted aside, narrowly dodging, but the edge of the spell clipped its flank.
And in that moment, that part of its coat exploded into gore. The creature screamed, fury replacing elegance.
The rest of the herd charged.
They came like silver arrows, hooves striking the ice and shattering it, their horns glowing.
Noah met them head-on.
He moved like a shadow, weaving between them, his body flickering with bursts of Null Stride and Flash Step.
His tail whipped out, smashing into one’s side and sending it tumbling.
Another lunged. He grabbed its horn mid-thrust, planting his boot on its forehead and flipping over it, twisting in the air.
He landed behind it, already casting. Pillar of Judgement.
A beam of golden fire fell from the illusionary sky, engulfing the unicorn’s body.
It screamed as the flames tore through it, crumpling before disintegrating into motes of light.
But there was no time to breathe.
The herd circled him, eyes glowing. They were learning. Adapting to his moves.
Noah frowned. “You’re smarter than you look.”
They came again, this time in pairs, one attacking, and one feinting. Their coordination was nearly perfect.
He flash stepped, deflecting a horn strike with his forearm, wincing as it tore a shallow cut through his sleeve.
His free hand shot out, grabbing the unicorn’s mane and yanking it forward, right into his rising knee.
The crack echoed through the cavern.
Before he could pull away, another beam of light struck him in the side, hurling him back.
He hit the ground, sliding across the ice. Pain flared in his ribs.
“Alright,” he hissed, wiping the blood from his mouth. “No more playing nice.”
Mana surged within him.
“Eternal Cradle.”
The temperature dropped instantly.
The light in the unicorns’ horns flickered as life was pulled from the air around them.
The closest one stumbled, its strength draining away.
Noah lunged, driving his fist into its skull, then twisted to kick another in the chest, sending it crashing into the wall.
They retaliated with renewed fury, beams slicing through the air like a storm of light.
He dodged and weaved through them, each movement intentional. Devour ate through some, and Flash Step saved him from the rest.
The unicorns were elegant but relentless, their beauty now twisted into savagery.
Noah roared, swinging his arm in a wide arc.
His tail lashed out again, striking one through the throat. Blood splattered across the ground.
Another unicorn leapt at him and he met it in midair, slamming his fist into its jaw, shattering bone.
A beam grazed his shoulder. Pain seared, but he ignored it, his body already moving.
His mana crackled through the chamber like thunder.
“Die,” he whispered, his voice low and dangerous.
He flash stepped through the herd, appearing and disappearing faster than they could react.
Every reappearance was marked by a blow, a burst of dark mana, and a spray of blood.
And one by one, the unicorns fell.
When the last of them tried to flee, he caught it mid-stride with Frigid Hunger. Ice shot up its legs, freezing it solid. He closed the distance, raising his hand.
“Devour.”
The spell took it. The creature’s beauty vanished into shadow and dust.
Silence fell over the cavern.
Noah stood there, chest heaving, surrounded by bodies that were rapidly fading into motes of light as the dungeon claimed them.
His cloak was torn, with blood, his and theirs, splattered across the ground.
He flexed his fingers. Power hummed in his veins, Devour feeding him from the kills. His muscles ached, but he felt… alive.
He looked around once more at the chamber. The glow of the moss reflected faintly in his orange eyes.
“Unicorns,” he said quietly, almost amused. “Guess the abyss has a sense of humor.”
