Chapter 214: Chapter 214: Lan Lan vs. Her Overworked System
Su Qinglan’s eyes sparkled the instant she saw the reward list.
“White flour… toilet paper… rain boots… and a cub talent pill??”
Her lips stretched into a huge grin. This was amazing. This was beautiful. This was finally something useful!
For the first time in days, her System notification didn’t look like it was bullying her.
She hugged Hu Yan’s neck a little tighter out of pure joy.
Finally! A mission! A real mission!
The last main quest had taken forever. And the system missions were so rare that she sometimes wondered if her system was… sleeping? On vacation? Dead?
But just as she was thinking that…
DING.
“Host, don’t worry. Now that your newbie period is over, missions will appear more frequently.”
Su Qinglan blinked.
“…Newbie period?” she whispered internally. “What newbie period? Why did no one tell me this?! I didn’t even get a beginner’s tutorial!”
The system responded with absolute calmness.
“Host, please work hard. More missions will come soon. More missions mean more rewards.”
“…Wait… what newbie period…?!”
“Now Xuyu will be going offline… bye host,” Xuyu said and became offline again.
He didn’t tell her that her missions were so few because of her ability. The stronger her ability is, the more missions she would get. So the time she had spent can actually be treated as a newbie period. He was not entirely wrong at all.
And she had to blame herself for finding out so late how to improve her ability. After all, in some things he could not interfere and could only give hints.
The connection was immediately cut.
Just like that. Su Qinglan’s eye twitched violently.
“Oi. Oi! You come for three seconds and just run away again! What are you even doing all day? Who gave you a job with such questionable work ethics?!”
Somewhere in the depths of her mind, Xuyu paused mid-task. He heard everything.
He stared into the void for a full two seconds.
“…”
But he still didn’t respond.
Because he really didn’t have time to argue with his host today. He had twenty-three system windows open, seven reports pending, and the mission-monitoring mechanism needed tuning again.
So he simply shut off all communication except the automatic mission tracker and reward dispenser.
Back in the real world, Su Qinglan let out a silent scream.
“Don’t tell me my System is busier than a corporate office worker?!”
Hu Yan, who heard none of this inner chaos, looked down at her worriedly.
“Lan Lan? Why is your face doing that?” He actually wanted to say why it was deforming in such a way… but he didn’t say it. After all, how could his cute Lan Lan make such strange faces? It must be his eyes that were malfunctioning.
Su Qinglan smiled stiffly. “Nothing. Nothing at all.”
Rong Ye, running ahead, glanced back. “Did your leaf coat get wet?”
“No,” she said flatly. “Only my soul,” she murmured in a very tiny voice.
But despite wanting to strangle her system, she still couldn’t stop her excitement.
A new mission. A clear goal. And rewards that would actually help her… ohh my finally flour… she could eat many delicious things… la~
And toilet paper… just thinking about it made her cry. Finally, she didn’t have to wipe her butt with leaves. Her eyes almost welled up with tears of happiness.
Her heart thumped with renewed energy.
“Alright,” she whispered to herself, eyes shining. “Three pregnant females. Twenty-four hours. Let’s do this.” She knew the system must be referring to the females in the rabbit tribe.
And with that, her leaf raincoat rustling softly, Su Qinglan straightened proudly in Hu Yan’s arms.
She held tightly to Hu Yan’s neck as the three of them hurried toward the tribe leader’s house.
The raincoat she made fluttered softly with every step Hu Yan took, and she peeked from his arms with happy eyes.
The tribe leader’s house was at the center just as usual and in a bigger tree. Several beastmen were already gathered outside, murmuring with restless voices. It seemed the strange dome and the news about the many tribes wanting to get inside had already spread.
As soon as they stepped inside, Su Qinglan saw her father, Su Mingxuan, standing in the center of the room. His sharp eyes were concentrated in deep discussion.
Several elders were also gathered, speaking in low urgent tones. Su Mingxuan looked tired, but the moment he saw Rong Ye rush in, followed by Hu Yan carrying Su Qinglan, his expression turned instantly somber.
“What happened?” he asked.
Rong Ye wasted no time. “Leader, something serious. At the foot of the mountain… we found a rabbit-mixed tribe. They looked exhausted and almost drowned. And among them… two pregnant females.”
The entire room froze.
Su Mingxuan’s ears stood upright, and even the elders turned pale. Beastmen protected pregnant females no matter which tribe they belonged to. It was a rule older than the mountains themselves.
Rong Ye continued, “They said their den is already gone. It was completely flooded. They’ve been wandering through the storm, hoping to find shelter for just a night.”
A heavy silence fell. The sound of the light rain outside felt louder than ever.
Su Mingxuan finally spoke, his voice steady and deep. “We beastmen must protect younglings. Even if they belong to another race, a pregnant female is sacred. We cannot ignore this.”
He straightened his back and his body lifted with authority. “Gather the warriors. We will go down the mountain immediately.”
Hu Yan nodded, and Rong Ye also shifted slightly, ready to move at any moment.
But Su Qinglan suddenly raised her hand. “I want to come too.”
All the beastmen in the room whipped their heads toward her.
“No!” Hu Yan said immediately. His arms tightened around her because he knew exactly what she was planning. “It’s dangerous.”
Rong Ye also frowned. “Lanlan, outside the mountain the rain is not like here. It’s harsh and cold. You should stay.”
But Su Qinglan shook her head stubbornly. Her large eyes held a gentle but firm determination. “If those pregnant females are sick or weak… I can help them. I am not useless. No matter how small I am, I can still help. And don’t forget I can treat females and some injuries.”
The room fell silent again.
Hu Yan clearly wanted to refuse, but he also understood the seriousness. Pregnant females traveling in such bad conditions… anything could happen. And what if it was already too late when they were brought to the upper mountain? But he also didn’t want to risk his own female who was pregnant.
But if something did happen, they would never forgive themselves.
She saw hesitation in their eyes and quickly gave Hu Yan her best pitiful look. “If you don’t let me go… then how will I help them? Don’t worry, I am very strong,” she whispered with wide, determined eyes… and thinking to herself she is not a weak female at all… if they allow her she could even lift a huge rock.
But seeing that Hu Yan was still not ready, she knew her strongness couldn’t conquer him, so she shamelessly clung to him and said, “Hu Yan, when we come back… you can warm me.”
Hu Yan’s ears turned bright red. He almost dropped her.
“Lanlan!” he hissed in a strangled voice.
Several beastmen nearby coughed and pretended not to hear. Even Su Mingxuan’s eyelids twitched.
But Su Qinglan continued innocently, “I should help them, right? Only by doing good deeds the beast God will favour us, and then after it we can cuddle in our home without any shadow that you didn’t help the females.”
Hu Yan’s face became darker and darker, a strange mix of embarrassment, protest, and complete surrender. In the end, his shoulders dropped helplessly.
“…Fine,” he muttered weakly. “But I won’t let you walk. I will carry you the whole time.”
Su Qinglan brightened instantly and hugged his neck tighter. “Good! I was planning that anyway.”
Rong Ye covered half his face with his hand to hide his laugh. “She is too spoiled.” But why did she never give him any offer? First Han Jue and now him.
Su Mingxuan sighed deeply but nodded. “If Lanlan goes, she stays in Hu Yan’s arms the entire time. No stepping on the ground.”
“Yes, Leader!” Hu Yan answered seriously, as if this was a life mission.
