Chapter 319: 319- Lin Zhaoyue [II]
Du Juan kept her composure, though her palms were starting to sweat.
Lin Zhaoyue resumed rubbing Fang Yuan’s head gently, her voice lowering to a disturbingly loving tone:
“Worry not, dear husband… I’ll make sure to eradicate every single person who dares covet our land.”
Du Juan quickly stepped forward again.
“A-about that, Matriarch Fang,” she said carefully, “there is… an issue.”
Lin Zhaoyue’s eyes narrowed.
“What issue?”
“It’s your cultivation,” Du Juan said softly. “We don’t know how it happened… but it is currently as if you have never cultivated.”
Lin Zhaoyue scoffed.
“That’s ridiculous. I would have sensed—”
She lifted her free hand and reached inward and tried to stir her qi only to move nothing.
Her breath caught and her eyes widened in horror.
“…What?”
She tried again, focusing harder, searching deeper yet there was still nothing.
Not even a flicker or a spark was produced.
It was like staring into a well and finding only darkness and no matter how deep you tried to reach, water was never reached.
Lin Zhaoyue’s voice trembled.
“…My… qi… It’s… gone?”
Her head lowered and her bangs hid her eyes.
But Xiao Pei, Du Juan, even the Saberfang could feel the temperature in the air drop sharply.
And then Lin Zhaoyue slowly lifted her head, lips curving into a smile that was beautiful and far too calm.
“Oh,” she said sweetly, voice dripping with dangerous calm.
“So… my whole cultivation had been erased, my cultivation.”
Her eye twitched.
“Hehe…”
Lin Zhaoyue stared at her trembling hands.
“…Useless…” she whispered.
The Saberfang nuzzled her shoulder gently, but she didn’t react.
“I can’t protect him… I can’t even protect myself…”
Her voice cracked.
“If danger comes… I’ll just drag him down. I’ll be dead weight… I’ll—”
Du Juan immediately stepped forward.
“Matriarch Fang,” she said quickly, “don’t say that. You can recover your cultivation. Even become stronger.”
Lin Zhaoyue didn’t look up.
Du Juan continued softly, reassuringly:
“I know it’s possible because… I did it myself.”
Lin Zhaoyue’s gaze flickered.
“I had my dantian shattered. I lost everything,” Du Juan said.
“I thought I was finished. Hopeless. I felt I was a burden too. But I rebuilt with the help of you, you saved me.”
She bowed respectfully.
“You can do it too. You’re even stronger than I ever was. Patriach Fang will also do his best to help you.”
Lin Zhaoyue stared at her.
For a moment… something in her softened.
But only for a moment.
Then she shook her head fiercely.
“You… are you.”
Her voice wavered.
“And I… am me. I can only be with husband as long as I’m useful.”
She looked down at Fang Yuan, asleep in her lap, and her face twisted with sorrow.
“My dear husband…” she whispered, brushing his forehead with trembling fingers.
“This one… can’t do anything for you anymore. I’m… I’m worthless now.”
Her voice broke completely.
“So… maybe I should let the other bitch take over again… she was far more useful, wasn’t sh—”
“STOP.”
Fang Yuan jolted awake, grabbing her wrist before she could finish.
His tone broke no argument.
“Zhaoyue. Don’t say that.”
She gasped, startled by the sudden movement.
Fang Yuan leaned up, cupping her cheeks gently.
“You don’t have to prove anything to me,” he said, voice low but intense.
“You’ve already been useful to me. Plentifully useful.”
Her lips trembled as his words sank in.
“And even if you weren’t—”
he continued, brushing away the tears forming in her eyes,
“—you’re still you. That’s enough. I don’t need you to be strong to stay with me.”
She stared at him wide-eyed, her breath quickened.
“Patriarch Fang… Wh-Why are you shouting…?”
Her shoulders shook.
“I… I didn’t do anything wrong… did I?”
Her voice was small, frightened.
Her eyes glistened, panic building.
“P-Please don’t be angry…”
she whispered,
“please… don’t hate me…”
The moment Lin Zhaoyue’s voice quivered, the Saberfang behind her growled.
It’s whole fur bristled and it’s massive muscles tensed.
Its golden eyes locked onto Fang Yuan with primal hostility.
It took one huge step forward before baring it’s fang at him.
Xiao Pei grabbed the crimson spear tight and Du Juan readied herself for battle.
The air trembled with killing intent.
The beast clearly wanted to maul Fang Yuan to pieces for “making mother cry.”
Fang Yuan raised a hand tiredly.
“…Not now, I don’t want to accidentally kill you.”
The Saberfang froze mid-step, claws digging into the ground.
Lin Zhaoyue blinked softly at Fang Yuan, confused and fragile.
Fang Yuan exhaled deeply.
“…Let’s go home for now,” he murmured, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek.
“We’ll talk later.”
He rose slowly, supporting her with one hand while placing his other calmly on the Saberfang’s enormous snout.
“Let’s bring your pet along first.”
The Saberfang rumbled approvingly, lowering itself obediently, completely tamed under Lin Zhaoyue’s presence alone.
Fang Yuan then turned to Xiao Pei and Du Juan, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Without moving his lips, his voice echoed directly into their minds,
“Before we figure out what’s really happening to her…
say nothing about today.”
Both of them stiffened and nodded frantically.
“Yes, Patriarch!”
“Understood!”
Fang Yuan flicked his sleeve and a void shimmered open.
He lifted Lin Zhaoyue gently into his arms, the Saberfang sticking to them like an overgrown shadow.
While Du Juan and Xiao Pei wait on the back.
And then the whole group stepped through.
SHOOOM!
And the world twisted around them.
On the other side of the void, they appeared in front of Mount Skyhowl’s courtyard.
It felt quiet and serene and a glance.
And then..
“Uu…uuu…—”
Lin Zhaoyue went still.
Fang Yuan’s eyes widened.
“Oh no—”
BLEEEERRRGH!
Lin Zhaoyue immediately vomited all over the ground.
The Saberfang whined sadly, gently patting Lin Zhaoyue’s back with a massive paw.
Lin Zhaoyue clung to Fang Yuan’s sleeve like a drowning person, tears leaking from her eyes.
“I… I think I’m dead again… Patriarch Fang… why can’t we travel normally…?”
“…I’m not killing you,” Fang Yuan muttered, rubbing her back, “You know, it’s for a quicker travel…”
BLEEEERRRGH!
She gagged once again.
