Chapter 300: 300- Updated*
Fang Yuan stared at the baby for a long moment before the corners of his mouth started twitching between both disbelief and amusement.
Then, with a flick of his wrist, the lingering flames scattered into harmless wisps of smoke.
He exhaled lightly and turned toward the trembling woman nearby.
“Aunt Yueyao,” he said, his tone calm and warm, “I trust you’ve been well?”
Fang Yueyao, just a step away from her child, forced a laugh that trembled at the edges.
“I–I’ve been well, Clan Head… well, at least until just now,” she said, her voice tight as she tried to compose herself.
Inside, however, her mind was in chaos.
What should I do? Even the Clan Head came personally… this is serious! Will he take my child away? I’m sure he will…. The whole area exploded after all… What to do.. what should I do?
Her eyes darted to her baby, heart twisting in panic, only to see the little one giggling up at her, eyes bright and innocent.
Straightening her back, she turned toward Fang Yuan and lowered herself into a deep bow.
“Clan Head,” she said firmly, “I am deeply sorry for the disturbance. But please… punish me if you must. My child doesn’t understand what he’s done, he’s young and innocent.”
For a breath, the courtyard was in silence before Fang Yuan’s laughter rolled out breaking it.
“Hahaha! Aunt Yueyao, there’s no need to be so tense.”
His voice was steady but carried authority, like a mountain that reassures even as it looms large.
“This was an accident, and let’s just say, children are unpredictable. But as need a precaution, just in case something like this happens again—”
Before he could finish, Yueyao blurted out desperately, “I’m willing to move into the woods with my child if I must!”
Fang Yuan blinked, momentarily speechless. He gave her a look that mixed both disbelief and faint amusement.
“…The woods?” he muttered, then sighed, shaking his head slightly before turning toward the disciples who had gathered around.
“Dear desciples, I’m very pleased that you all responded swiftly to this situation,” he said, his tone shifting to command. “That shows vigilance and I’m proud of you and those who has taught you.”
A few disciples exchanged excited glances as Fang Yuan continued, “Forgive me for this but I have a small task for you all. But of course, no one is forced to accept it, you can decline if you want. And for those who accept, I won’t treat you badly, each of you will receive a Bone Marrow Cleansing Pill as reward.”
Gasps spread through the group, and soon enough, one young disciple stepped forward immediately, fists clasped.
“Clan Head! Even without the pill, we’d gladly obey your command!”
The others quickly echoed him, voices filled with eagerness and pride.
Fang Yuan’s lips curved slightly before he gave a satisfied nod. “Excellent then. That’s the spirit I expect from Fang disciples..”
A wave of excitement rippled through the crowd, the disciples practically glowing with pride.
Finally, Fang Yuan turned back to Yueyao. His voice softened once more.
“Aunt Yueyao, from today onward, you and your son will live next to my chambers. That way,” he said with a faint smile, “I can keep an eye on the little one and make sure we don’t have any more explosive surprises.”
Yueyao blinked, her eyes glistening. She bowed deeply once more, clutching her baby close to her chest.
“Thank you, Clan Head… truly.”
The baby only giggled again, as if blissfully unaware of the chaos he had caused, his laughter echoing softly beneath the steady, protective gaze of Fang Yuan.
Fang Yuan gave one last glance at Aunt Yueyao and the child in her arms.
Then, turning slightly, he gestured toward the disciples still gathered nearby.
“Escort them,” he said evenly. “Make sure the mother and child are settled in the quarters next to mine. Make sure you handle everything properly and in case you have any troubles, you can always consult an elder.”
The disciples bowed as one. “Yes, Clan Head!”
Yueyao gave another deep bow of gratitude before being led away by the eager disciples.
Fang Yuan watched until they disappeared down the corridor and then he turned and also returned back to the altar.
The air around the altar still shimmered faintly with lingering spiritual energy.
With a wave of his hand, Fang Yuan released the protective formation; the runes dimmed and dispersed like fading stars.
He approached the center, where the smooth, faintly glowing egg rested, and lifted it carefully with both hands. It pulsed softly with warmth, Du Xin’s soul now safely resting within.
Fang Yuan carried it towards Du Juan and then without a word, he reached into his spatial ring and drew out ten crystalline pills, their surface swirling with dense spiritual energy. The faint scent of herbs filled the courtyard.
“These,” he said, his tone gentle, “are ten Nascent Soul Pills. You’ll nurture this egg to life with the help of these pills. I would have gladly done it but the one who does it will have their fate aligned with the one from the hatch. But nothing is free, in exchange, from this day forth, you’ll spend a thousand years protecting the Fang Clan. What do you say?”
Du Juan’s eyes widened in shock. The weight of those words struck her harder than the brilliance of the pills.
Without hesitation, she dropped to her knees, forehead nearly touching the ground.
“Clan Head,” she said, voice trembling but resolute, “this life is already yours. I will serve you and the clan until my death. You’ve given my sister a chance to live again, a life for a life. I will not forget this grace.”
Fang Yuan’s expression softened for a fleeting moment. He turned to Xiao Pei, who simply raised a brow and shrugged.
“If you want,” Xiao Pei said lightly, trying to break the solemn mood, “we can always change our surname to Fang too. ‘Fang Juan’ actually sounds quite nice, doesn’t it? Oh and I can be Fang Pei.”
Fang Yuan shot him a dry look before commenting, “I don’t have a problem with Fang Juan, but I don’t like the tone of Fang Pei.”
