- Chapter 276 - 276 276- Updated
276: 276- Updated* 276: 276- Updated* Morning came and sunlight pierced through the room falling on Lin Zhaoyue’s serene face yet she still woke up to a disaster.
The entire estate was currently abuzz with frantic whispers that the Azure Phoenix Kingdom’s army had pulled back from Coldwind City overnight.
And instead of pressing the Fang family barrier, they had marched south to focus on another city, one perched on a defensible hilltop.
Even more baffling, the Qin army that had been lurking in the distance was gone as well, vanished like mist beneath the morning sun.
“Ahhhhhhh!” Lin Zhaoyue’s scream rattled the windows when she heard wind of it.
The birds scattered from the rooftops as she stormed out of her chamber, only to be immediately shoved back inside by the family’s maidservants.
“M-Matriarch!
Please, at least wear some clothes first!” After a brief tussle, a flurry of fabric, and a bath, Lin Zhaoyue finally emerged.
Her robes were crisp and pristine, her hair tied elegantly but her scowl was murderous.
Felicia, one of the younger maids, trailed behind her, utterly exhausted.
She slumped against the doorway, looking as though she’d aged ten years in one night.
Lin Zhaoyue gave her a fleeting glance, flashed her a sweet smile that carried no warmth, then spun on her heel and stomped out into the courtyard.
“What do you MEAN they stopped their attacks?!” she roared, her voice booming across the estate like thunder.
“Are you kidding me!?” Her words echoed through the halls, and servants ducked their heads, scurrying like frightened mice.
Even the elders winced at the sheer force of her outrage, knowing that Lin Zhaoyue in a good mood was dangerous, Lin Zhaoyue in a foul one was catastrophic.
Fang Jingyi, who had just been passing through the courtyard, froze mid-step at the sound of Lin Zhaoyue’s thunderous voice.
“Ah… Lin Zhaoyue, you’re awake,” she said cautiously, forcing a faint smile.
Lin Zhaoyue whipped around, her gaze sharp as a blade.
“Is it you?” she demanded, eyes narrowing.
“Are you the reason they retreated their attacks!?” “H-huh!?
No!
No, of course not!” Fang Jingyi stammered, completely flustered, caught off guard by the sudden accusation.
“I don’t have such capabilities.” Lin Zhaoyue stared at her in silence for a heartbeat longer, then sighed and shook her head with visible disappointment.
“You’re right, Aunt-in-law… Arghhh, why did they have to stop?!” She stomped her foot like a child denied her favorite toy.
“I thought I’d wake up to a slaughter fest!” Her tone was sad, almost pitiful, as though she had been robbed of some great joy.
Fang Jingyi’s blood ran cold.
She kept her expression steady, but inside she was screaming in horror.
This… this woman is insane!
Lin Zhaoyue’s eyes suddenly lit up as an idea seemed to bloom mid-sentence and her face brightened into a mischievous smile.
“Oh!
Say, Aunt-what if I attack their army first?
Would husband be angry with me?” Fang Jingyi’s throat bobbed as she tried to answer, voice tight with caution.
“You know… your husband banished his own brother because he killed the man he had spared.” Lin Zhaoyue laughed, utterly unconcerned.
“So?
I don’t think hubby will spare any of the people who attacked us yesterday.…” She broke off, clapped her hands once, then spun toward Jingyi with an exuberant grin.
“Oh!
I’ll go out for a walk, Aunt.
Thank you for the suggestion-this is why I love you!” Before Fang Jingyi could find a word, Lin Zhaoyue flung herself forward and hugged the older woman so suddenly and fiercely that Jingyi had no time to react.
Then Lin Zhaoyue vaulted into the air and let out a sharp whistle.
From the courtyard below, her Saberfang leapt up to meet her as if answering a call.
One great hill seemed to shift as the massive beast sprang free, followed by three others, each half the size of the first and a hulking carriage-sized beast lumbering behind them.
The ground trembled with their arrival, and Lin Zhaoyue’s laughter echoed as she landed atop the lead Saberfang, already riding off toward the south.
Fang Jingyi stood frozen, watching Lin Zhaoyue vanish into the sky atop her monstrous Saberfang.
Her lips trembled as she muttered in disbelief, “What do you mean thank you for the suggestion?
What suggestion!?
What suggestion did I give!?” Her knees buckled, and she slumped weakly to the ground.
“Elder Jingyi,” Felicia’s gentle voice broke through, calm and steady despite her own exhaustion.
The maid quickly moved to her side, catching her before she fully collapsed.
“Please, allow me to take you to the resting area.” Jingyi opened her mouth to protest, but her body betrayed her, too weary and shaken to resist.
After a moment, she let out a soft sigh and gave a small nod.
“I’ll leave it to you, child… I need a break.” Felicia’s lips curved into a faint, reassuring smile.
“As you wish.” With careful strength, she lifted Jingyi onto her back and carried her away.
Lin Zhaoyue soared southward on Xiao Bai’s broad back, the wind tugging at her robes as the rumble of battle slowly rose in the distance.
The smell of smoke and iron grew heavier the closer they came to the warzone.
She leaned down, her fingers brushing through the beast’s thick silver fur, scratching affectionately at its neck.
“Say, Xiao Bai… how about we just walk straight through their ranks without harming anyone?
And if they dare to attack us, well… then we can politely counterattack.
My husband won’t be angry with me for that, right?” Xiao Bai threw back its head with a long, rumbling awoo, awooo, before tilting its massive head sideways.
Its eyes slid toward the smallest of the Saberfang pack trotting alongside them, the carriage-sized one.
Lin Zhaoyue chuckled, patting the beast’s mane.
“Uh huh, uh huh, yes yes, I hear you.
Don’t worry, I won’t let little Xiao Bai set a paw in battle.” Her gaze shifted to the smallest Saberfang, bounding along with an eager light in its eyes and its tongue lolling out.
She pointed toward the dense forest opposite the battlefield.
“As for you, little Xiao Bai, we’re going to play hide and seek.
Go on, hide in that forest and wait for me.” The young beast wagged its tail furiously, tongue still hanging out, before letting out an enthusiastic, high-pitched arooo!
With a playful leap, it dashed off in the direction she pointed, vanishing into the trees, branches snapping as it disappeared into the greenery.
