Chapter 299: Star of Ruination.
Within the grand chambers of a high-tech ship, wandering silently through the boundless void of space, a girl slowly opened her golden eyes.
Her body was drenched in warm blood, still pouring as if it refused to stop and her flesh screamed with damage as her nerves were torn and bones were strained… but she didn’t care for any of it.
The only thing that mattered was the crushing truth that she had failed and how she had failed to pull her brother out of that cursed world.
Behind her, a man was seated in deep concentration, one hand firmly pressed against her back, channeling power to fuel her connections with Alden.
Before Caera could say anything at all, his body shuddered.
Hack—!
He coughed violently, splattering crimson blood across the pristine floor.
“Grandpa…?” Caera whispered, her voice trembling as she turned her head. “Are you okay?”
This man was no ordinary existence.
He was Eidon Thalyros.
The Duke of the Stellar Expanse, an entity revered across countless systems, feared by enemies and worshipped by allies. One of the strongest beings to ever walk the stars.
And yet…
Even he was coughing blood.
He slowly opened his golden eyes which had long since lost the radiant glow they once held.
The first thing he did wasn’t to check his own condition but to look at his granddaughter.
When he saw that she was still alive, he let out a long, trembling sigh.
“Thank god… you’re fine.”
At this moment, he was not a cold and distant supreme, not a Duke feared across the Stellar Expanse.
He was just a failed grandfather, one who couldn’t even protect his own grandchildren.
He lifted his hand and waved it once through the air and in an instant, every wound on Caera’s body vanished. The blood soaking her clothes disappeared as if it had never existed in the first place.
Caera didn’t even bother looking down at herself.
Instead, she asked softly, her voice tight with unease, “What was that, Grandpa…?”
She wasn’t talking about the healing.
She was talking about the unknown entity that had interfered at the very last moment, just as she was about to sever Alden’s fate from the world of Eryndor and pull him free.
She could have pulled him out without severing his fate, just like the time he had entered the Flux Dungeon but doing so would leave the thread of fate intact.
As long as that invisible connection to the world’s will remained, Alden would never truly be free and no matter how far he ran or where he hid, the world would eventually summon him back.
It was inevitable.
That was why she had to sever his fate and it should have been easy especially since she even asked for her grandfather’s help.
But…
Even with the help of one who had gazed closer to fate than almost any other, she still couldn’t sever it.
Nor could she pull Alden out.
Eidon looked at his granddaughter in silence. His expression was calm but even that composure couldn’t conceal the crushing weight behind his words.
“We were too late, Caera.” His voice was low and filled with resignation. “The Star of Ruination is already close to Alden.”
Caera’s breathing turned rough.
“Alden…” Eidon continued slowly, each word striking like a verdict, “…has already been pulled into the twisted play HE decided.”
“No…” Caera shook her head weakly, golden eyes trembling. “Mom would have foreseen this. She would have known.” Her voice cracked, desperately grasping for hope. “She wouldn’t have left Alden on that planet if there was no path for his survival.”
For a moment, Eidon said nothing.
He wanted to deny it. He wanted to comfort her and more than anything, he wanted to give his granddaughter hope but he knew better than anyone.
“Lucia…” he said quietly, the name heavy on his tongue. “…was probably fooled by HIM as well.”
The words fell like a death sentence.
Caera’s golden eyes slowly dimmed.
“No… no… that can’t be true.”
Her voice trembled as if speaking louder might shatter what little hope she had left.
“You’re lying,” she said weakly. “That has to be it.”
She shook her head, denying every word and every possibility.
She had spent thousands of years trapped in a void alone, broken and convinced she would never see her family again.
And yet, when she finally did…
Hope was ignited once more… Hope that she could reunite with her family and that everything she had lost could still be reclaimed.
But now…
Now her grandfather was telling her that the one responsible for the destruction of her family was already closing in on Alden on the very planet where her mother had left him for safety.
The irony was cruel and the despair… unbearable.
But Eidon didn’t lose hope.
He placed a steady hand on her shoulder, grounding her trembling soul.
“We still have time, Caera.”
His voice was calm and firm in a way only someone who had stared into countless endings could be.
“The Star of Ruination hasn’t fully taken hold of the world’s will.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Something there is resisting it… fiercely.”
A pause.
“And he will not move until he gains total control or until the ending he planned is ready.”
Eidon looked straight at her, his gaze burning with quiet resolve.
“As long as we can locate the true coordinates of that world before that happens, I can face the Star of Ruination myself.”
His grip tightened ever so slightly.
“To save Alden and even in the worst case… I can bring him back.”
Caera steadied herself and resolved her heart once more.
She had already lost too much to surrender to despair.
And then a presence appeared.
The vast hall, which had been silent just moments ago, subtly warped as if reality itself had been disturbed.
Even Eidon stiffened as he hadn’t sensed it until it was already there, standing behind him.
A calm, almost amused voice echoed through the chamber.
“You’ve lost your rhythm, huh… old man?”
Caera turned toward the man who had appeared out of nothingness as if he had always been there.
Her golden eyes widened in disbelief.
A single word slipped from her lips, barely louder than a whisper.
“Uncle… Mokha?”
