820: Let him stay.

820: Let him stay.

Aiden froze.

His pupils dilated slightly, and for a heartbeat, everything around stopped -the music, the lights, even the world Only Arwen’s words echoed in his head.  I … think my water broke.

Take me to the hospital.

His arms, which were wrapped around her waist, tightened instinctively.

And his eyes snapped down at her dress, then back to her back -panic already swirling in his irises, making them go darker.  “Moon …” his voice cracked.

“Are -are you sure?” Are you -”  She grabbed his arm, looking like she was resisting the discomfort she was feeling.

“Shhh … Quiet!” Her gaze darted to look at the distance where Gianna and Jacob were still dancing.

“Take me away quietly.”  Aiden frowned, but he didn’t argue.

Without wasting another second, he wrapped his arms firmly around her as though he feared that even the slightest breeze could harm her now.

“Don’t move,” he whispered, “I will handle it.” Arwen nodded, exhaling in relief.  But his next breath was not relief.

It was rage, fear, hysteria -all mixed in one.

But he obeyed her wish.

He remained quiet when all he wanted was to shout.

He didn’t alert the crowd, nor did he draw any attention.  He simply lowered his head, pressed a kiss on Arwen’s forehead, and whispered, “Hold on to me.” Then he tightened his grip like she was made of the world’s most fragile crystal and stepped back from the dance floor slowly.  No one noticed.  Everyone was busy cheering as Gianna and Jacob started their third song.  Jason caught a glimpse, though.

His brows shot up before he walked in that direction.  Meeting them on the way to the exit, he asked, “What’s wrong?

Is she uncomfortable?” His gaze moved to study Arwen, and just when he would have realized it, Aiden’s voice came.  Jason looked up at him.

He didn’t say another word.

He straightened his back and immediately turned and rushed out, planning ahead like the seasoned doctor he was.  Aiden didn’t ask anything.

His focus stayed as he guided Arwen to the exit.

His every muscle coiled tight as though sparing her one extra second of discomfort was a crime.  Outside, Arwen felt cool night air brushing her cheeks.

She coiled more into Aiden’s embrace.  Emyr was already waiting at a distance.

Jason must have alerted him.  “Car.

Now.” Aiden barked, his voice low but lethal.  Emyr understood immediately.

He rushed and opened the rear door, practically bowing in urgency.  Aiden helped Arwen inside the car with a gentleness that only seemed to contradict the absolute chaos brewing within him.

Then, closing the door, he went around and slid beside her.  “Drive,” he ordered.  Emyr nodded before flooring the accelerator.  Arwen’s expression was tight.

She didn’t speak, but the discomfort was etched across her face.

The more Aiden looked at her like that, the more he felt the anger building inside.

“Is it hurting very badly?” he asked, his tone tensed.  Arwen heard him and slowly turned her head, opening her eyes to look at him.

Her lips curling up slightly.

Shaking her head, she said, “I am fine.

It’s not really hurting.”  He frowned and stared at her like the moon was falling out of the sky.

“How can it not be hurting?

You clearly look uncomfortable.”  “Husband, discomfort is not painful.

Labor is, and I am not yet there.” She could feel herself getting close, but there was still time for that extreme pain.  Aiden’s frown deepened.

Looking at him like that, she reached out and brushed her thumb under his eye, as if calming a frantic animal that was struggling inside to break free.  “Trust me, I am fine,” she repeated, smiling softly.

“You are panicking more than me.

Can you please not?”  “You are asking me something that I couldn’t give you, Moon,” Aiden said, his expression expressing the struggle he was having inside.

“I can never stay calm knowing what you are going through alone.”  Arwen shook her head insistently.

“I am not alone,” she said, her voice coming in a forced whisper.

“You are here with me.

Aren’t you?”  “I am just physically here.” his words felt like a jab to himself.

“I can’t take your pain or even slightly share it.

And that this is enough to kill me inside.”  She shook her head.

“Ide, I am -ah,” she winced when the car suddenly hit the small bump.  Aiden immediately shifted closer, holding her shoulder and waist, lifting her slightly.

“Emyr,” he hissed, “if the car shakes one more time -”  Emyr felt a shiver run down her spine.

He nearly cried, and couldn’t bear to look through the rear mirror.

Just keeping his eyes on the road, he nodded, “Understood, sir.” “Husband,” Arwen whispered, a subtle laugh escaping her.

“You will suffocate me like this.” He immediately pulled back, only to check if she was fine.

When he saw her expression easing a little, he pulled her back in his arms, this time with comfort.  Arwen inhaled his familiar cologne; she felt herself relaxing a little.

Leaning onto him, she whispered, “I am not feeling alone at all.

Just your presence is making me feel like everything here is easy.”  Aiden heard her, and even though his eyes softened, his heart didn’t ease.  —- Soon, the car pulled up at the hospital.  Jason was already at the door when the car screeched to a halt.  “Bring her,” he said briskly, his voice strained with seriousness.  Aiden didn’t need to be told.

He opened the door, scooped Arwen into his arms in one swift, fluid motion, and started carrying her inside.

His steps brisk with desperation.  “Aiden -” Arwen wrapped her arms around his neck.

“I can walk.”  He paused only to stare down with fury clear in his gaze.

“You will not be walking while in labor,” he snapped, clutching her like she weighed nothing.

“Not even a step.”  Arwen was taken aback.

She looked at him as though trying to solve a mystery.

“You … how did you know?”  Although it hadn’t begun long ago, she had made sure not to let the pain become evident on her face.

She knew he was panicking, and to not make it worse, she tried to conceal her pain.

She pretended to be just feeling the discomfort that comes due to water break, and not the pain of the labor.  But he still saw through her.

How?

She saw Aiden’s jaw tick.  “You can’t hide yourself from me, Moon.

not your discomfort, not your pain.” He said, and then resumed walking inside the hospital.  Jason saw him and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“This is going to be a long night.” He shook his head before gesturing for someone to recheck the arrangements.

He had already asked that everything be kept prepared.  As they entered the delivery wing, the obstetrician and nurses were ready.

The room was kept prepared.  Aiden didn’t put Arwen down, and the obstetrician had to remind him.  “Mr.

Winslow, you can put her down now.

I need to examine her.”  Aiden frowned slightly.  Jason, who also stood there, couldn’t help but threaten, “Aiden, if you don’t let the doctor do the job, we unfortunately have to sedate you so that we all be comfortable.”  Arwen patted Aiden’s arms.

When he looked at her, she said, “Set me down.

You … can’t carry me throughout the labor.”  Aiden reluctantly set her on the delivery bed.

He then glared at every nurse who came within two feet of her.  “If you touch her wrong, even the slightest, you won’t be walking out alive.:  The nurses flinched, scared to the core.

They didn’t dare to take one wrong step.

Even the obstetrician was taken aback.

She turned and looked at Jason.  Jason groaned.

Shaking his head, he said, “Don’t listen to him.

He has gone hysterical.”  “I am not hysterical,” Aiden’s voice came low and cold, enough to make everyone present feel the shiver.

“I am serious.”  Arwen grabbed his hand, slowly whispering, “Husband, you are scaring them.

If they are scared, they might go wrong.”  He inhaled sharply.

Then, looking up at the obstetrician, he said, his voice much better than before but still carrying the strain.

“Just do your job well.

I don’t want to see my wife struggling.”  Everyone relaxed slightly.  “Mr.

Winslow,” the obstetrician spoke softly, “Don’t worry, we all carry notable experience.

We will do our best.” And with what, she stepped to check.  Jason noticed the way Aiden looked at the entire thing and realized keeping him there in the delivery room might just make it difficult.

So, considering everything, he suggested, “Aiden, I think, you should come out with me.

Let the doctor handle it here.

We can wait outside.”  Aiden’s gaze remained fixed.

He refused without even considering, “I am staying here.

Moon needs me around.”  Jason frowned.

“But -”  “D-Dr.

Clark,” Arwen interrupted, stretching her arms to hold Aiden’s hands strongly.

“Let him stay.

I want him with me throughout.”
