Chapter 386: I will be here for you
Edgar didn’t say anything about the conversation he had overheard. Cass was grateful for it, not sure if he had the energy to deal with that conversation at the moment. Edgar did what he said he would, walking them to ‘his territory’, whatever that meant, and hailing them a carriage. He didn’t put Cass inside and leave like Cass kind of expected.
Instead, he put Cass inside, got in, and then picked Cass up and placed him in his lap again. Cass didn’t even have the energy to refuse, and honestly? He wanted it. He needed the physical touch, but he couldn’t look in Edgar’s eyes. He was weak right now, and if he saw disgust there he wouldn’t recover.
Cass could tell. He felt like a damn doll right now. Delicate and soft. One wrong push and he would shatter.
He was shaking again. Cassian had only enough power to speak that much, but that didn’t mean he was calm. He was a storm inside of Cass. Anger and rage whipping around inside of him. It made Cass feel hollow.
The trip to the temple was silent. When they got there, Edgar picked up Cass again and carried him up the steps towards the front doors. For a second it seemed like they would get turned away, even with Edgar being the son of the Head Priest, but they clearly made the right call and let both of them inside.
Coming in through the front doors to the main worship chamber of the temple was a strange experience. It was clearly the way that everyone was supposed to enter since it made the space feel even more grand, but coming from the space that they had just been in, it was…strange.
Uncanny.
Cass was realising all over again that he was just a pawn in a pissing game between the gods and demons and he was hating the consequences right now.
Edgar walked Cass all the way to the raised podium, placing Cass gently down on the ground there and Cass sniffed.
“Thank you, Edgar.” Cass whispered and much to his surprise, Edgar pulled his hood back and placed his hand on the top of his head. Surprised, Cass turned his head, sure he looked like a disaster as Edgar brushed his hair back from his forehead and leaned in, placing a kiss there. Cass stared at him, shocked.
Edgar was staring at him, his eyes glowing blue. It was clear he was feeling a lot of emotions, but anger wasn’t one of them. Cass couldn’t believe it. Edgar chuckled.
“You are welcome, Cass. Now, have your meeting so we can talk after, alright? I’ll be here the whole time. Speak with ease.” Edgar said and Cass swallowed as his eyes spilled over. He hadn’t expected that. Not from Edgar. Edgar could tell as well. He smiled softly, ruffling his hair, sliding his hand down to cup his face. “If you look at me like that Cass, I’m going to forget myself and kiss you in the temple not on our wedding day.” Edgar teased and Cass swallowed.
“Are you only supposed to do it then?” Cass asked. He had no idea about the temple customs of this world. He watched as Edgar’s gaze narrowed before he closed his eyes slowly, sighed, and opened them again.
“You are going to make me into a sinner, Cass.” He accused softly and Cass felt his eyes widen as Edgar’s face got closer. Cass halted him mere centimeters from his lips.
“N-No!” Cass protested weakly. “I’m gross.” Cass told him. Without hesitation Edgar used the sleeve of his cloak to wipe up Cass’ face. It was quick, a motion that an older sibling would do and something Cass was familiar with. He blinked, stunned as Edgar moved in again.
“Better?” He asked, his blue gaze burning a hole into him. Cass swallowed. He nodded. Edgar’s lips touched Cass’, his hand sliding down to cup Cass’ neck and Cass sighed against his lips. Edgar made a soft noise before he pulled Cass in closer.
It was a soft kiss. Gentle. Nothing like the other kisses that he’d shared with either Lucian or Edgar. Cass could feel true affection in his actions, and that only made Cass cry more. He was a damn leaky tap right now, but Edgar didn’t seem to mind. He just wiped his tears away gently, making Cass cry more.
He pulled away because Cass couldn’t breathe through his stuffed up nose, his expression gentle, soft. Cass was trembling as he looked up at Edgar’s handsome face. His blue gaze was warm, glowing, and Cass felt guilt eat him alive.
“Are you going to be in trouble?” Cass asked and Edgar’s lips curled up into a smile.
“Didn’t you know that was a phrase that bad boys use when they sneak girls into temples for some privacy?” Edgar asked and Cass stared at him blankly. He could say that Cassian and Cass were’ bad boys’ but they weren’t bad like that. Edgar chuckled, leaning in to press another kiss against his forehead. “I was in trouble the moment I was born, Cass. You can’t get me in more. Honestly, being involved with two heroes is probably my father’s greatest joy. Don’t worry about me right now, alright? Speak to the gods, get your answers and after we can go get a hot drink, you can use my body as you please, and then we can go home.” Edgar didn’t mean anything sexual by it, Cass could tell.
That didn’t mean that Cass didn’t blush.
Cass dropped his head, nodded, and swallowed. He felt Edgar pull away and it was a true loss to Cass. He wanted to ask him to stay, remain at his side, but he knew better. He had to go alone now.
He needed to.
Cass turned towards the statues, his expression cooling as he stared up at them. There was such a contrast between them and what he had just come from. They were holding items like harps and wreaths instead of having their damn cocks out. In fact, gender was not something you could easily tell from their forms.
They were just statues, but it was a small detail that Cass was realising right now. It was obvious what gender the demon king was. It was obvious that the gods masked theirs. What did that mean for Cass?
He knew that intersex people existed. He wasn’t fucking ignorant. He grew up in a world where they had pride flags, celebrated everyone and everything. However, Cass wasn’t…that, at least he didn’t think so. He was pretty certain that intersex people had like a mix and match situation going on, half of one thing, the other half of another. It usually resulted in infertility, he thought. He could also be ignorant to the truth about it.
He never thought he would be in this situation. It was very…he was basically the first of his kind here, in many ways. He didn’t think he would be bringing the omegaverse here, but here he was, and it was the worst thing in the world if he got pregnant. It would be the worst thing to happen to this world if he got pregnant.
Cass shivered, shaking at the thought before he bowed his head. He had to speak to them, tell them the piece of the puzzle that they had been missing. He had a few questions that he needed to ask too. Mostly, he wanted to ask if he could speak to Cassian again. In the void again.
They needed to meet and speak about this personally.
~
“Hello?” Cass called, his voice ringing out in the void. The echo alone told him that he had successfully transitioned from the regular plane to the…in between plane? The god plane? The waiting room? Cass was unsure what to call this blank void.
Raising his head, Cass was not surprised at all that he found himself in that familiar, eerie void of darkness. He wasn’t chained up, his hands were free, and there was not another soul in sight. Not in feel or sight.
Was he alone?
“We are here.” A voice called. Familiar, like Cass had spoken to it before.
“Are you? I can’t really feel you.” Cass told them and a soft, gentle breeze brushed past him.
“We are far away, observing another galaxy at the moment. We are here for you though, little one. Come. Why did you rush to speak to us, Caspian?” Cass swallowed.
“I found out the contract with the demons. Demon king, specifically.” Cass said. The energy in the space shifted and Cass suddenly felt like he wasn’t alone. He felt like several gods were watching him now. The eyes were searing, burning into him to his very core. Fuck, he hated this.
He had forgotten, in his desire to run away from everything, what the gods were like. Why he avoided speaking to them frequently. How terribly unsettling it was to be in this space, unable to see them but knowing that they could see you. In whatever form you were.
It was kind of strange that Cass preferred the way that the demon king showed up. Cass wanted to throw up as soon as he had that thought.
“You found out the contract? What? What is it?” A voice asked, not the original asker. Cass swallowed.
“It was made between Cassian’s mother and the demon king. She…she offered up her son to carry the next demon king. She sold off his human side to the demon king.” Cass said. There was a rumble around the darkened space. Cass could feel the rage of the gods.
It was not a feeling that a mortal should feel.
Cass found himself short of breath, even though he didn’t need to breathe. It was choking, the weight, the force of the anger around him. He knew that they did not notice, so lost in their own rage that they didn’t care about the soul that had finally told them the missing piece that they had not known about.
Cass felt himself fall to his knees, choking.
A soft, gentle breeze brushed by, relieving Cass only a few seconds later. A scolding voice spoke up.
“Control yourselves. You will hurt our dear hero.” It was the faint voice, the one that Cass had spoken to before. Several times, at this point. The gods who had joined in quelled their anger and Cass could feel his soul’s relief. He didn’t feel like he was being crushed anymore.
“Thank you.” Cass muttered as he stood up again and a laugh, layered over and over, filled his ears.
“Do not thank us, Caspian. You have done us a great service by giving us the missing piece that none before you were able to find out. How did you find out?” They asked and Cass felt his body tremble.
“I…I went to speak to the demon king at the demon shrine. I…I had answers that I needed after the last heat I had.” Cass said and noticed a shifting among the gods.
A suspicious shifting.
Cass narrowed his eyes.
“Wait. Did you…watch that?” Cass asked and silence met his question. Cass knew that was an answer enough. He gasped, horrified. “You watched me? When I was at my weakest and most vulnerable? You’re a bunch of perverts!” Cass accused. Not a single god protested his claim, nor did he get chained up or punished for his words. Cass felt his face warm. He didn’t know who was worse, the gods for being damn peeping toms, or the demons for making him this way.
