Chapter 380: Where did you think I got the wine from?
Cass had never eaten so well. He had a full meal in his stomach, his healing tonic in his system and all of the hot deets from Byron. He was full.

So that meant he could buckle down and focus on his work.

A lot had piled up, so much so that he lost track of time until Fiona, Edgar and Lucian came knocking at his door. They were waiting for him to be a witness to the signing of the contract. They had expected that someone would let Cass know, but for some reason no one could find a maid in the building.

Cass wasn’t too worried about that, but he was worried since that meant that they hadn’t seen Sir Sanders and Ser Hune all day. While Cass went with them, he sent Byron to go do a lap, check up on the maid situation and the Sir Sanders and Ser Hune situation. He hoped that everything was okay.

Lord Ridgewood was waiting in the room from earlier, nervous with a strange, magical feeling pen before him next to a rather fancy-looking document. Fiona gestured widely, clearly putting on a show from the sparkle in her eyes.

“Have a look. Make sure I got nothing wrong.” She said and Cass gently picked up the piece of paper. He scanned over it, but honestly, it said pretty much everything that they had spoken about before. It was a pledge, tied to Cass. It had several of his names listed. Cass, Cassian, Cassian Blackburn, the second hero. All of that was listed when referring to Cass.

All in all, it looked normal. A regular contact that would result in him losing his holy powers if he did anything to harm Cass intentionally. Unintentional was forgiven with a light penalty of a day of weakness.

Lord Ridgewood stared at the contract, his expression void of emotion. That didn’t mean that Cass couldn’t tell that he was nervous. He had no choice not to sign this contract. If he didn’t, he was at the mercy of everyone else. He wasn’t protected. He could tell what that meant.

The signing of the contract was quick, with a brief flash of light, and then it was done after Fiona signed her name on it as well. She handed it over to Cass, a smile on her face and in her eyes.

“There. All done! Everyone feels better now, right?” Fiona asked, glancing around the room. Lucian gave a begrudging nod, his arms crossed while Cass just shrugged.

“Sure. We’ll go with that. You said you had another date planned with Lady Ava after this?” Cass asked, remembering what Fiona said earlier. She nodded, her eyes losing their sparkle slightly.

“Yeah. That’s why she’s resting right now. We’re going for dinner. She wanted to go to a lot of places while we were here. She didn’t really get to explore when she was studying here to become a saintess.” Fiona told him and Cass found himself glancing at Edgar just to confirm that. Edgar was nodding in agreement.

“I did give her a list of places that she should visit once she comes back to the capital a while ago. Before she…you know.” Edgar said and Fiona winced. Before she went off the deep end is what Cass was hearing.

“Okay. Well, have fun. I have to go find out where a demonic shrine would be still.” Cass said and Edgar looked at him.

“I know where one is.” He said. Everyone snapped their heads in his direction.

“What? Why do you know that?” Lord Ridgewood asked, horrified and Cass found himself nodding. Why would the son of the High Priest know where a demonic shrine was, and why would he not get rid of it? These things didn’t make sense.

“Yeah, why do you know that, Eddie?” Fiona asked and Edgar gave a shrug.

“Of course I would know where it is. Where do you think I go to pick up my wine?” Edgar asked and Cass found his mouth open. He had never considered it. It had legit never crossed his mind.

“I thought you got it straight from the source. Like, you had a group of people who you paid to supply you.” Cass told him slowly and Edgar laughed.

“That could be linked back to me. I would rather people find out I visit a demonic shrine than find out I have a group of people on the side. That could be presumed cheating, while going to a demonic shrine I could brush off as research. I can’t be possessed, at least, my bloodline can’t. Specifically me, though.” Edgar said with a shrug. “Can’t really possess you if you’re already a demon.” It was the first time that Cass had heard Edgar say it so clearly.

It affected everyone in the room differently. Lucian looked pleased, Fiona looked a little uncomfortable while Lord Ridgewood looked…sad. Terribly, terribly sad. Cass wondered if it was because he didn’t like coming to terms with the fact that Edgar was a demon? It was a good hypothesis. He also didn’t care to confirm it either.

“So you know where one is?” Cass asked, excited, and Edgar nodded.

“Yeah. I actually needed to go pick up more wine tonight. I normally send one of my servants, but if you’d like, we could go together?” He suggested, glancing at Cass slyly but Cass didn’t even notice it. He was too caught up in the fact that someone knew where it was in the city and that he could go now. Tonight and maybe get some answers. Cass nodded without a second of hesitation.

“That would be wonderful!” Cass told him, reaching out and grabbing his hands. “Thank you, Edgar. This is exactly what I needed to hear today!” Cass gushed and watched as Edgar’s eyes curled up as he smiled. He looked so pretty again that it made Cass pause for a second.

“I’m so glad you think so. My meeting was just after dinner and it isn’t too far away. You will need a hood though. It’s not really part of the uniform, but everyone wears one. Anonymity and all.” Edgar said and Cass nodded. Something with a hood?

Yeah, he had a lot of those. Sweeping capes with giant, dramatic hoods. Cassian was going for evil Villain who owned several castles, kind of vibe.

“That’s not a problem.” Cass told him seriously and Edgar chuckled.

“It’s a date then.” He said smugly and Cass blinked. Once, twice, before his face flushed and Lucian started yelling.

“What? A date? I want to come!” He protested and Edgar grinned widely.

“Absolutely not. A dragon at a demonic shrine? You’re going to be so damn moody and you won’t wear a cape either. I know you won’t. You’ll huff and puff and complain. It’s better if just Cass and I go. You can stay here and…guard the house.” Edgar told him and Lucian huffed.

“You just want to do something alone with him.” Lucian countered and Edgar turned to face Lucian, glaring.

“So what if I do? Is there anything wrong with that? You’ve been taking up all of his time, Lucian! You even taught him magic behind everyone else’s back! I’m a damn mage! I could have taught him too!” Oh, they were fighting fighting.

Cass was having a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that they were fighting about him, and when he glanced at Fiona, she had this glazed look on her face. Like this wasn’t the first time she’d heard this kind of argument.

With a start, Cass realised that it probably wasn’t. Just because they were now pestering Cass didn’t mean that they had changed who they were when they had been with Fiona. She probably had to diffuse situations like this all the time. Cassian just hadn’t cared enough to pay attention to them before now.

“Enough.” Cass growled, shutting both men up. “If you continue to bicker like this, I’ll go alone.” Cass warned. “I am more than capable enough to deal with any issues that would arise, so shut the fuck up. It’s annoying.” Cass warned and both men stiffened. When Cass glanced back at Fiona, her eyes weren’t as glazed as she had this…smile on her face.

Cass felt a shiver run down his spine at the sight. A warning sign flashed in the back of his mind, but he had no idea why. Why would he feel like someone had just walked over his grave seeing Fiona give a knowing smile? She was just smiling. It wasn’t anything menacing in the slightest.

“Shit.” Lucian growled, annoyed, but he stepped away from Edgar, pacing the room. He wasn’t arguing with him anymore, or anyone else, and Edgar huffed. He crossed his arms, glaring at Lucian, but not saying anything anymore. Even Lord Ridgewood glanced at Cass, impressed.

“It’s annoying how you’re able to handle them better than I could.” Fiona told Cass, smirking. Cass glanced at her and shook his head.

“This is handling them better? I don’t believe you. You could at least throw Lucian around when he was being an idiot.” Cass commented and Fiona laughed.

“Oh yeah. What a great boon that proved to be.” She said, rolling her eyes. “You’ve got this, Cass. I believe in you. If you can’t believe in yourself, believe in the gods. They wouldn’t have picked you for no reason.” She said. Cass didn’t have the heart to tell her that they basically had chosen him for no reason.

He just happened to die when he did and here he was.

He gave her an awkward smile as she scanned him, sighed, and nodded.

“Alright. I’m heading out now. I’m sure you’ll have a good time at the demon shrine. Keep me in the loop?” She asked and Cass nodded.

“Of course. Have a good dinner date.” Cass told her, meaning it, and Fiona smiled.

“Thank you, Cass.” She said before she turned, glanced back at them one last time at the door, and left. As she was leaving, Byron was coming in.

“My Lord, I have an update about Ser Hune and Sir Sanders. Ser Hune is under the weather and so Sir Sanders is taking care of her.” Byron told him and Cass frowned.

“Did she visit the tree yet?” Cass asked and Byron shook his head.

“She said that it was too soon to do so. She’ll be better soon. Just…magic fluctuation is what she said.” Cass didn’t know what that meant, but he was sure she was an expert on her own body. He also had Lucian and Byron. He was fine for the moment.

“Tell them to rest as long as they need.” Cass said and Byron nodded before ducking out again. Cass rolled up the contract that Lord Ridgewood had just signed and sighed. It would probably be best if he kept it in the little purse thing he had, just in case. For security.

“Edgar, follow me. Let’s chat while I drop this off in my room.” Cass said and Edgar’s eyes lit up. Lucian pouted, annoyed. His arms were crossed, his pecs pushed up and Cass did his best not to stare.

“Alright.” Edgar said, excited and held open the door for him. Cass tried not to think about how he was going to have to soothe a dragon either later that night, or tomorrow.
