Chapter 345: You might regret saying that in the morning
It was almost like his body knew as soon as they were on safe grounds. As soon as the carriage pulled into his estate, his body began to shift, change.
He’d been relatively normal. He knew he was on a timer, but it was like the thread that had been holding the timer together had snapped as soon as they started down the narrow tree-lined path.
Cass’ breathing altered, his chest growing tight as the clothes on his body began to make him feel claustrophobic. Cass pressed a hand against his chest, against his throat. His fingers trembled as soon, others began to notice that something was wrong.
Fiona was the first, since she was sitting right across from him, then it was Edgar.
“Cass? You look pale, is something wrong?” Fiona asked softly, and Edgar jerked towards him immediately. He had been sitting next to Lord Ridgewood, Cass sitting by himself on the bench, but now Edgar was at his side.
He looked like he wanted to touch Cass, but hesitated.
“I-I can’t breathe.” Cass got out, and immediately his fingers were at his throat, pulling open the buttons there. It was a small reprieve, the feeling washing over him in waves. It was like when he’d first had this. He was suffocating on just the feeling alone. Cass could hear how raspy his voice sounded in his ears, and could also hear the panic that was in everyone else’s, but Edgars.
“What’s going on?” Fiona demanded, her voice loud.
“We’re almost there, Cass. Hold out a little longer. I’ll get you up to your room in a heartbeat. Then you can take off the itchy clothes.” Edgar’s voice was soothing, and Cass had heard the fucker talk to Lady Ava like this before too. He hated that it was working on him.
Cass reached out, grabbing onto the front of Edgar’s shirt, yanking him close. Cass knew it would say a lot about their relationship, but he was fighting against kissing the man, this was the best he could do right now.
Cass buried his nose in Edgar’s throat, inhaling the scent of his sweat.
“Fuck. This is fucking awful.” Cass ground out, and rubbed his nose against Edgar’s throat. He felt the other man swallow thickly.
“Yeah? Are you overheating?” Edgar asked carefully and Cass nodded, fighting the whimper that wanted to leave his lips.
“It hurts.” Cass whispered, his other hand on his chest. His heart was beating so loudly in his own ears, his blood feeling thick and viscous in his veins. “It all hurts.” He whimpered and Edgar let out a shaky breath.
“You did a really good job holding out until now.” Edgar murmured, and Cass felt when he placed a hand fully on his back. Cass leaned in closer to his throat, inhaling his scent.
“What the fuck is going on?” Fiona demanded, clearly hating to be out of the loop. Edgar let out a soft sigh.
“Well, I’m not comfortable talking about it-”
“Who the hell would I tell about what I learned here and who would even listen to me at this point, Edgar? It would not do me any good to bite the hand that feeds me. Not now, and certainly not in the future. Just speak about it freely, and I’ll pretend I heard nothing.” Lord Ridgewood snapped, and Cass made a soft growl in the back of his throat.
“Watch it.” Cass grumbled, and Edgar patted Cass’ back.
“Even if you say that, I still can’t trust you, You’ve already bitten him once.” Edgar’s voice was hard, cruel. Lord Ridgewood snorted.
“Yeah, and I didn’t like the sour, bitter taste it left in my mouth. I’m his property now, Edgar. I’m not going to do it a second time. I’ve learned my lesson. Until he throws me out, I’m staying here.” Lord Ridgewood said, and silence hung in the air as Cass desperately attempted to keep his wits about him.
“I can just eat him if he tells others.” Cass muttered, and Edgar nearly choked.
“I didn’t realise that you could do that.” Edgar said, and Cass shrugged.
“I have trees.” Cass muttered, like that made perfect sense to everyone. It made sense to him, but it was clear he was losing his sense of reason, and fast.
“It’s related to his demon blood, isn’t it? My theory, the gods’ theory, it’s not far off, is it?” It was Lady Ava who spoke up in the tense silence. Edgar sighed heavily. The carriage continued to rock, meaning that they were still going down the long, long pathway.
“We aren’t sure but…that was a pretty good guess on both of your parts.” Edgar said softly. Lady Ava let out a soft exhale, before she whimpered.
“Oh, the poor thing. Has he…been going through this the whole time?” She asked softly and Edgar let out another sigh.
“I…was only recently roped in, and I’m not really allowed to talk about it, Avie.” Cass could hear how torn the man sounded, but Cass couldn’t care right now. He was trying to keep himself alive and awake. He fought the urge to sink his teeth into Edgar’s throat.
He could feel his pulse there, and as if sensing the danger, Edgar stiffened.
“Cass, please. Calm down. Keep breathing in my scent. We’re almost there. My bet is that Lucy can already tell that you’re-”
“He can’t.” Cass cut off. “Something cuts it off. I think.” Cass mumbled. “Just a little bite.” Cass muttered softly, more to himself than to the man he was thinking about biting. Edgar let out a strained laugh.
“How come I don’t believe you?” Edgar asked and Fiona let out a sigh.
“Fuck. Open the door. Just pick him up and jump out. Go into the trees if you need to. I doubt the forest would let anything happen to Cass, but clearly, he’s not well right now.” Fiona said and Edgar sighed.
Cass realised that he didn’t have his eyes open at that moment, so he couldn’t look at what everyone’s expressions were. He didn’t really care, if he was honest. He just wanted to look at how Edgar was looking at him, and how Edgar looked when he was in deep pleasure.
“Mmm. I wanna try something new.” Cass muttered and Edgar stiffened further. “I wanna-”
“Fiona, open the door.” Edgar said, cutting Cass off. “We’re past a safe point. Unless Cass is alright with you hearing his thoughts right now, which I know he won’t be, we need to get out of here.” Edgar said, and then the door was open and a nice breeze washed over Cass’ warm skin.
He let out a soft sigh, relieved, before his body was picked up and he was jostled.
“Wrap your arms around me.” Edgar whispered, his lips brushing against Cass’ ears. Cass whimpered, letting Edgar guide his arms up and around his neck.
“This isn’t the norm.” Cass whispered, or thought he was whispering. Edgar made a noise of protest.
“You are going to regret saying that soon.” Edgar muttered before they were out of the carriage. Cass could tell because of the way they were jolted.
As soon as they got their bearings, a large wind, a complaint from the trees, and a huge looming presence filled the inside of Cass. It had him feeling so full that Cass nearly choked on it.
“What’s wrong? Why are you out of the carriage?” Lucian’s voice was whip sharp, still rough from the suddenness of his transformation. Edgar’s grip on Cass tightened as Cass opened his eyes, dazed and glazed.
“It struck him almost as soon as he crossed into the estate. We have about 2 minutes until Cass is demanding things of us.” Edgar said, beginning to move. Lucian jerked, his expression tight before he fell into step with Edgar. It took Cass a moment to realise that neither of them were moving at a human speed.
They got to the front door before the carriage did, and when they got there, Sam was already there.
He didn’t seem to know what was going on, but his expression quickly flipped from one of excitement and fear, to one of just business.
“Is it happening again?” He asked of the two men who had helped Cass the first time. Edgar didn’t answer, just moving up the stairs two at a time. They had to go up three flights, and it was at times like this that Edgar hated how mansions were designed.
“It is. He crossed over the boundary of the estate and the stress got to him.” Lucian said and Cass gave a breathy sigh.
“I can still hear you.” He muttered. A clear complaint and Lucian let out a rumble of a laugh. Edgar was forced to stop as Lucian bent, pressing a kiss against Cass’ damp forehead.
“I know, sweetness. I know you can. Let us speak for you for the moment, alright? Just rest. Keep your eyes closed. We’ll take care of you.” Lucian told him. Edgar muttered an easy agreement.
“We’ve got you, Cass. We’ll keep you safe. Just breathe in my scent. You can even bite now.” Edgar told him, and then let out a sharp exhale as Cass’ teeth sunk into Edgar’s throat. His steps faltered before he managed to keep his strength and continue up the stairs.
“He’s got a firm bite, doesn’t he?” Lucian teased, and Edgar huffed out a breath.
“Don’t you start teasing me too.” Edgar muttered, and Lucian laughed.
“Who else am I going to tease? You both have a biting fetish. I think it’s cute.” Edgar let out a noise of complaint.
“As if you don’t have one either.” Edgar growled and Lucian’s laugh wrapped around everyone.
“Ah. You’ve caught me. Oh no. I’ve joined a very exclusive club.” It was clear the man was poking both Cass and Edgar, and Cass rose to the provocation. Cass waved his hand, using his magic easier since he had begun using it in the ballroom. Edgar was forced to stop as Cass pulled Lucian close with magic until he could wrap his hand around the fabric in front of those damn pecs. He pulled him in close, releasing Edgar’s throat, giving the bite mark there a pleased look, before turning glowing, red eyes towards Lucian.
“If you don’t treat him nicer, I’m going to top you.” Cass threatened, and Lucian’s eyes flung wide open, before he laughed. Edgar sputtered.
“H-How is that the punishment you decided to come up with?!” Edgar asked, outraged, while Lucian continued to laugh.
“His mind has completely shifted over, and sweetness, that’s not much of a punishment. You’ll have to think of something better.” Lucian teased, and Cass felt his mind scramble to come up with something else. Something that would punish him.
He licked his lips, until his mind finally decided on something.
“Fine. I’ll fuck myself, and you can only watch.” Cass countered, and watched as Lucian’s nostrils flared and his pupils dilated. Cass felt a victorious grin cross his face.
Bingo. He found something that would punish the other man. Maybe it would work as a punishment for both men.
“You fucking tease.” Lucian rumbled, clearly upset as Cass sunk back, sinking his teeth into a fresh spot on Edgar’s throat.
“Fuck. At least break skin if you’re going to bite that deep.” Edgar protested, almost sounding annoyed. Cass knew better. He bet the man was itching to get out of his clothes, get behind closed doors so that he could touch Cass.
He knew that was what he wanted, because that was what Cass wanted. Of course they all wanted the same thing.
