Chapter 254: Testing formations.
The next day arrived quickly. Alex didn’t sleep through the night, as there was no need to; he had spent the whole night farming exp points outside the city.

He had already agreed with Ellie that the date would be a dinner date, so they would meet in the evening. They had also discussed where Ellie would be waiting for Alex, since he wanted to pick her up.

In the meantime, Alex decided that he would do something useful before evening came; the useful things that he had in mind were farming exp points and trying out formations!

His excitement toward learning formations had not died down a single bit so even though he couldn’t learn more at the university because he was currently on leave, he could still practice on his own.

‘Hmm, I’ll be able to craft my next Saint rank spell soon at this rate.’ Alex thought to himself as he added the finishing touches to the formation that he had just made.

Returning his focus to the formation, he did a thorough check to make sure that he had done everything right and that there wasn’t a mistake. After making sure that he seemed to have done everything right, Alex brought out a grade two mana core and placed it in the center of the formation.

Immediately after dropping the mana core into the format, the symbols and runes of the formation lit up as mana flowed from the mana core into it.

‘A success!’ Alex exclaimed inwardly, pleased with his hard work. He didn’t give the command to activate the formation instantly, he instead disappeared for a moment and reappeared a few moments later with a small Magic beast in his grasp.

The magic beast was only the size of a cat, its entire body was covered in long yellow hair that made it look like a lump of hair, its short six limbs thrashed about as it tried to break out of Alex’s grasp, but it was futile as it was only a common rank magic beast.

Not paying any attention to the struggling magic beast, Alex tossed it at the formation.

The magic beast let out a loud squeak as it was shoved through the air, it turned its body and landed perfectly on the ground, right on the formation that Alex had prepared.

Before it could attempt to run away from this scary human who suddenly appeared and kidnapped it, Alex’s voice rang out.

“Cage,”

That was the command to activate the formation that he had created.

Swoosh!

The next second, a burst of mana rushed into the formation, accompanied by faint yellow light rising from all the corners of the formation.

The yellow light quickly connected and formed into a three-meter-tall and one-meter-wide transparent cage around the magic beast.

The magic beast was confused by the transparent yellow cage that had suddenly appeared around it but as a magic beast with low intelligence, it still attempted to escape by ramming into the yellow light that formed the cage.

Bam!

A rather loud sound rang out as the small magic beast collided with the cage, surprising Alex.

The small magic beast had quite some force despite being a common rank beast.

Alex continued to watch as the beast tried to escape, repeatedly crashing into the walls of the cage that was created from his formation. But no matter how hard the beast tried, it was unable to even cause a ripple in the cage.

Alex was satisfied with this result and proceeded to carry out more tests.

He disappeared and appeared again with another magic beast in his grasp, this one was bigger than the previous one and was also stronger.

It was a mutated ranked magic beast.

Alex took out the previous mana core, deactivating the formation in the process and letting the yellow-haired beast scurry away. He then placed another mana core in the heart of the formation before tossing the mutated ranked magic beast toward the formation.

“Cage,”

Following his command were a series of loud bangs as the mutated ranked magic beast tried to escape from the yellow cage.

Each time it rammed into the yellow walls of the formation, ripples would spread out as if a stone was dropped into a peaceful lake. For a moment, Alex thought that it was going to break free.

Alas, after several attempts, the magic beast gave up as it was unable to break the yellow walls.

Another successful test!

Alex disappeared once again and returned with a transformed ranked magic beast.

Others would be speechless if they witnessed Alex bringing one magic beast after another to test out his formation.

After all, a transformed ranked magic beast was supposed to be on par with Master rank mages and even Archmages!

After repeating the process of deactivating the formation and installing a new mana core, Alex threw the magic beast toward it.

The formation had barely formed when the loud sound of glass shattering rang out, the transformed ranked magic beast had destroyed the formation in a single strike and was already running away.

It was more intelligent than mutated and common-ranked magic beasts; it knew that Alex wasn’t an opponent that it could defeat, so it ran once it broke out of the formation.

‘My formation,’ he exclaimed inwardly as he stared at the destroyed formation.

His eyes suddenly turned towards the fleeing magic beast at a fast speed and he disappeared.

“Well, it was only a grade 2 trapping formation after all, it’s normal for a transformed ranked magic beast to be able to escape.” Alex sighed, acting like nothing serious had happened while casually storing away the corpse of a magic beast.

‘Well then, let’s continue testing!’

Hours passed swiftly and it was soon evening. One could see Alex standing still like a statue in the middle of nowhere, around him were what seemed to be hundreds of attempts to create a formation.

Alex had tried creating a grade 3 formation after the transformed ranked magic beast destroyed his previous one, but every single attempt had ended in failure.

Alex closed his eyes and took a deep breath, he wouldn’t allow his failures to ruin his mood; he would try again after learning some more at the Magic University.

He stared at the sky and realised that it was almost time for his date, it was time to return to the city.

Alex arrived at Brandvel City some time later and went to take his bath, after which he changed into the outfit that he had prepared for this evening.

A white long-sleeve button-down shirt and brown pants, he stared at himself in the mirror and had to admit that he looked very handsome in them.

After making sure that his hair was alright, he came out of his apartment. He didn’t use Void walk this time and used the door instead.

While walking, he brought out his phone and sent a text to Ellie.

“On my way.”
