Chapter 242: Shadow spikes
The position of the magic beast was quite far away from the group’s location, despite its speed as it swooped towards them. This was why they could not see it yet, despite already feeling its presence.
“Get ready, a beast is approaching.” Harold informed the five in front.
The five teenagers, who had previously moved with carefree expressions, instantly became vigilant and assumed combat stances. At the same time, they brought out different magic items that had been prepared by their families.
These magic items included body armour, magic boots, and magic shields that hovered in front of them. Their eyes looked sharp with a hint of nervousness as they stared around, looking for the magic beast that was coming.
By now, the beast had finally entered their field of vision. It shot from behind one of the trees and flew straight at the five teenagers in front like a huge arrow. Its speed was so fast that those below the Expert mage rank would not be able to follow its movements with their eyes.
What was more shocking was that it didn’t make any sound while shooting through the air, this was bound to make it harder to spot by unsuspecting targets.
The five teenagers were currently in similar cases, they were vigilantly looking around for a magic beast that was approaching from the sky. And with the speed of the bird, it would reach them faster than they would be able to react even if they spotted it now.
Luckily for them, they were not here on their own.
“Dom!” Harold called out.
“On it,” one of the members of Harold’s group replied and rushed forward. At the same time, brown stars of the earth element appeared around him and quickly formed star patterns that connected into a star constellation.
The entire forming process was quick and took only a second. After forming the star constellation, Dom slammed his palms into the ground as his eyes lit up with a brown glow.
“Earth defence!” He shouted. The brown star constellation in the air released a burst of mana that rushed into the ground and caused the surrounding area to tremble.
The next second, the ground in front of the five teenagers exploded and an impressive earth wall rose from the ground. Just in time for something to crash into it at high speed.
Boom!
The earth wall shuddered violently after something crashed into it at the speed of a moving train, parts of it were sent flying but it managed to hold on nevertheless.
Kahhhhh!
A loud bird cry echoed through the air after the collision, followed by a gust of wind that was a result of the beast flapping its large wings.
The five teenagers were shocked, everything had happened too quickly for them to keep up. They just saw a huge earth wall appear in front of them and the next moment, a massive magic beast crashed into it.
Had that earth wall not appeared on time, they would most likely have died!
On the other hand, Alex was observing the beast after it appeared. It was a bird-type magic beast with the size of a truck and metal metal-looking beak that was a meter long. Its huge talons which looked like curved blades were over two meters long and looked like they could easily slice through steel.
The entire body of the bird was covered by yellow feathers and it had glowing red eyes that locked on the five teenagers while it was swooping down to crash into them.
But what interested Alex the most was the fact that this bird was only at the mutated beast rank yet its speed could already compare to some transformed ranked beasts.
Of course, to him, this was nothing. But the same could not be said for the five brats who were currently facing the bird though.
After successfully blocking the dive of the magic beast, the earth wall was removed by Dom so that the five teenagers would be able to see it clearly.
“Now attack it,” Harold ordered them.
At the same time, the bird spread its wings and prepared to move into the sky again. After hearing Harold’s voice, the five of them quickly recovered from their shock and made their moves.
The kid with long black hair who had the same family name as Eric was the fastest to act.
His eyes turned pitch black as black stars appeared around him and quickly connected into two star patterns, he was going to cast a core rank spell!
“Shadow spikes!” He voiced out.
The next moment, two massive shadowy spikes shot out from the two star patterns and stabbed into the shadow of the beast.
Kahhhhh!
The bird cried out, and it flapped its wings rapidly, generating strong wind and dust as it frantically tried to fly into the air. But because of the shadow spikes pinning its shadow to the ground, it was unable to get away.
‘Impressive,’ Alex couldn’t help but comment inwardly.
This kid has the shadow element just like Eric and his spell had managed to surprise Alex too.
After the kid pinned the bird in place, the rest four attacked with their own spells.
“Air blast!”
“Ice spike!”
“Lightning strike!”
“Siren shots!”
Boom!!!
A series of explosions rang out as the spells rained on the beast. Blood-covered feathers scattered into the air while the pained cry of the bird rang through the place.
It didn’t stop trying to escape into the sky but the shadow spikes firmly held it in place, preventing any form of escape for it.
The kids didn’t stop there, after the first wave of attacks and the bird wasn’t dead yet, they cast another round of spells.
“Although they are brats, they at least have some strength and aren’t a complete disgrace to their families,” Harold stated as he watched the kids gang up on the bird.
Before long, the cries of the bird finally stopped, it was finally dead.
The boy with long black hair stopped using shadow spikes and finally freed the shadow of the bird. A look at the huge corpse and one could easily tell that it had suffered greatly. A good portion of its feathers were missing and it was entirely covered in wounds and burns.
The five of them looked toward Harold, waiting for his comment; they obviously didn’t forget to give Alex a long proud stare.
“Not bad, but you took too long and made too much noise. Now more magic beasts are aware of the battle and are already heading here.” Harold informed.
The expressions on their faces hardened after hearing Harold’s words, they weren’t happy with his comment.
“Hmph, not like he could have done a better job.” The girl with long brown hair snorted while glaring at Alex.
“Oh? Let’s see then.” Harold said with a smile before looking at Alex.
At this moment, a bird cry rang through the air as another magic beast appeared from behind one of the trees and flew toward the group.
It was a similar bird to the one that the group killed earlier. Harold asked Alex to handle this one.
Alex nodded calmly as silver white stars began to appear around him and form two star patterns.
“Space bullets,” he mumbled softly.
