Chapter 223: First formation, Successful.
However, instructor Henry only taught them how to construct simple formations and not how to activate them.

But just from constructing the formation, activating it was as easy as placing a power source in the core of the formation and then giving the command.

For this reason, he had sternly warned everyone not to attempt activating a formation for the time being but they were allowed to try contracting on their own so that they could familiarise themselves with the process.

Not all formations needed commands to work, but for the basic ones, one had to state a command while pouring their mana into the formation, even with the power source already in place.

The power source for formations was mana cores or magic items that could store mana, depending on the nature of the formation you are trying to make.

After patiently learning for three weeks, Alex had finally grown impatient and couldn’t wait to test it out!

That was why he had left Brandvel City that night.

The sky was pitch black at the moment with tiny stars looking like poked holes on a large blanket. It was clearly night but Alex was thousands of kilometres away from the capital.

He could sense mages within a million miles around him; this included the people in Brandvel, but nobody was too close to his current position, so he could carry out his experiment.

Out of habit, he still wore his all-knowing mask and indestructible robe.

Alex began to write the runes and symbols on the ground. Since he had only learned the basics of formation and hadn’t even mastered all of the runes yet, Alex knew that he was only capable of creating a grade one formation.

And that was what he was going to do.

The formation that he had in mind was “float”, a simple formation that would make items that weren’t too heavy to float a few meters in the air.

After some seconds, Alex was done. He had used his finger to draw the symbols and runes on the ground. At a glance, what Alex had written looked like a lost, forgotten language, but thanks to the time he had spent in the university, Alex could read what was on the ground.

<Formation – Float/five meters – grade 1/core>

This was how easy it was to create a simple formation, of course, that was only if you could understand the runes and symbols. Alex had constructed the formation like a circle drawn by connecting weird symbols, and the ‘core’ was located at the centre of the formation.

After he was done, Alex brought out a grade one mana core; the mana core of a common rank magic beast.

He didn’t instantly place the mana core on the formation, instead, he carefully checked the runes and symbols to make sure that he didn’t make any mistakes.

After a whole minute of careful observation, Alex was certain that he had a perfect job. Only then did he place the mana core on the ‘core’ of the formation.

Then, he stretched his right hand toward the formation and slowly released mana towards it.

At the same time, he said the command.

“Float,”

Right after his mana entered the formation, the runes and symbols came to life with a weak burst of yellow glow. The mana core that he had placed on it also released a weak buzz as the mana within it started to flow out and entered the formation that was now glowing.

Alex stood there, a fascinated expression hidden behind his mask as he stared at the glowing formation in front of him; it was the only source of light in the area around Alex and one could spot it from hundreds of meters away.

“It worked!” Alex exclaimed with excitement, his first formation was a success!

Forcing himself to calm down, Alex brought out something from his storage ring. It was a magic item that was given to him by one of the members of the Rising Wave group when he was leaving Balon City.

It was a small round shield that could block one attack from a mutated rank magic beast.

Alex held the shield and looked at the glowing formation. He tossed the shield into the formation, the next moment.

The shield fell into the formation without a sound but instead of dropping to the ground, it trembled as it gradually rose into the air and soon reached a height of five meters before stopping, the glowing formation right under it.

“Amazing,” Alex mumbled as he stared at the shield in the air, his eyes shining with glee.

He then proceeded to bring out more items of similar size and threw them into the formation. Just like the shield, they trembled slightly as if balancing their weight before rising into the air and stopping at a height of five meters.

Carried away, Alex brought out another item. It was a large hammer with a rather short handle. He weighed it and could tell that it was quite heavy, almost as heavy as a small car.

But Alex didn’t think much of this before tossing it into the formation.

Just like the other items, the hammer didn’t make a sound when it entered the range of the formation. It trembled violently after entering but instead of rising, it plummeted down because the formation was unable to carry its weight.

BAM!

The hammer landed on the formation on the ground, instantly creating a small hammer-shaped hole and destroying the formation in the process.

The shield and other items that were floating in the air previously dropped to the ground since they no longer had the support of the formation.

“So it’s too heavy for it then,” Alex said calmly, not a bit disheartened that his formation was destroyed.

What mattered to him was that he had succeeded.

He proceeded to retrieve his items first before trying another formation, but just then, Alex felt the chaotic energy of a fight going on.

He stood up and looked in a direction, but he wasn’t facing the capital.

From the aura of the fight, Alex could tell that the two who were fighting were magic beasts, and they were stronger than Alicia when he first met her.

“Interesting,” he mumbled.

Alex then quickly kept his items back in his storage ring before leaving the place and heading in the direction of the fight, he didn’t take the mana core that he had used to activate the formation because it was now an empty core and wasn’t of use anymore.

After minutes of using Blink and Void Walk simultaneously, Alex had crossed a large distance and was getting closer to the scene of the fight.

Although he was still very far away, he could already hear the sounds of collisions and feel the trembling of the earth.

Plus, the sky had turned bright red in the distance as if a large fire was raging.

Alex wondered what sort of creatures were fighting to cause the sky to change colour.

He felt the presence of countless other magic beasts along the way, powerful ones. But Alex didn’t bother with them as he kept Blinking and using Void Walk.

In addition to the presence of magic beasts, Alex also felt the presence of lots of mages heading in the same direction.

“As expected of the capital,” Alex mumbled as he noticed the strength of these mages.

The weakest amongst them was a Sage!
