Chapter 598: The Ruined City
Hot wind and the stench of decay whipped against Daniel and Kayn’s faces.

The demons had tied them with rough black ropes and were dragging them forward with pushes and kicks toward the city.

Kayn’s expression was a bit stiff. It was the first time he had been forced to endure humiliation like this, and he was barely holding himself back from ruining the entire plan.

He glanced at Daniel, thinking he might be feeling the same way… but Daniel’s face was completely calm and expressionless, as if he wasn’t angry at all.

“….”

They gradually got closer to the city. From a distance it looked like a dark stain, but the closer they got… the more horrifying the reality became.

When they entered the city, the sound of crackling fire and the smell of burnt flesh hit them.

Bodies… some torn apart, some burned… some hanging from broken wooden posts… and a few still alive, tied up and dragged just like them.

In the middle of the road stood a gigantic demon. His height was nearly double the others, almost three meters. Just looking at him made their bodies tremble.

His skin was a dark red, marked with thick, heavy horns and covered in burning black lines.

Even from that distance, his aura pressed down on the air like the weight of a mountain.

The commander of the group bowed his head to him.

“Why are these two humans still alive?” the giant demon asked with cold, freezing eyes.

“Orsius, sir… the thing is… one of these humans used demonic energy.” The commander rushed forward and kneeled.

The gaze of the giant demon, Orsius, sharpened. Green flames flickered like two small fires in his eyes. It was as if he had just heard something impossible.

“That’s impossible.”

His voice was short, but so heavy that even the demons around them shivered without meaning to.

“I swear on the Shadow of the King, it’s true, sir. We saw it ourselves. He created a demonic energy shield.” the commander continued.

Orsius pressed his lips together. His aura burst out for a moment, wild, deadly, and the entire street fell under suffocating pressure.

Daniel and Kayn’s knees trembled, but their thoughts remained calm. The plan was going exactly as intended.

Daniel frowned slightly. The pressure from this demon was far beyond any Rank A expert. If he had to guess, he would say Orsius wasn’t too far from Rank S, maybe even capable of fighting real Rank S awakeners.

But was it logical for such a powerful demon to be sent to destroy a small city like this? He doubted there had been even a single Rank S expert here.

Rank S awakeners were not grass and stones you could find anywhere. Their presence was extremely valuable.

“Fine. When we return to the base, I’ll inspect these two first. If it’s true… you’ll be rewarded. If not…”

A deadly gleam appeared in his eyes.

After a few seconds, Orsius pulled his aura back and said:

“You won’t survive.”

Then, without even looking at them again, he walked away. As if the burned city was full of things he needed to take care of.

“Throw these two into the prisoner carts. Keep them there until we depart.” The commander let out a shaky breath and signaled to his group.

Two demons grabbed Daniel and Kayn by the collar and threw them inside a dark metal cart. The door slammed shut and the sound of a heavy lock echoed through the hot, silent air.

There was silence for a moment.

Then suddenly, both Daniel and Kayn smirked.

“The plan worked,” Daniel said through mental communication.

“Yeah… luckily they fell for it.” Kayn smiled.

“This way we get inside their base easily. No trouble at all,” Daniel added.

Kayn nodded, but his gaze fell outside, to the city. To the destroyed houses. The bodies on the ground. The few humans still alive, tied like animals. And the demons walking through the ruins as if they were searching for something.

“But… why did the demons suddenly start advancing?” His voice carried real concern, and he had every reason to be worried.

Daniel also looked outside for a moment. The fires… smoke… the smell of death… nothing had been left intact.

“Isn’t it normal?” Daniel said. “Two sides are at war. Demons pushing forward doesn’t sound strange.”

“No, it’s not normal. According to the treaty, neither side is allowed to enter the other’s territory. If one side crosses the border, the gulf turns into a full-scale battlefield. That treaty has been standing for years… no one has broken it. At worst, fights have happened only in neutral zones or unsafe regions. This city is a safe zone.” Kayn explained.

“So why now?” His voice turned cold.

“Maybe two reasons. First… they want to send a message to the humans. That they fear nothing. Not even after the appearance of the Mad Empress.” Daniel shrugged.

“And the second?”

“They’re looking for something specific.”

Kayn fell silent, thinking it through. In fact, with how the demons were still walking around the city searching through rubble, it was obvious they were looking for something.

Daniel didn’t say anything more. His reasoning was solid, but they didn’t have enough evidence to reach a stronger conclusion.

It was obvious just from looking around that the demons were searching for something.

But the question was: what could possibly make the demons break the treaty? Daniel felt it had to be something extremely important, something significant even to the Demon King himself.

And the fact that a demon with S-rank power had been sent to handle the matter only reinforced his suspicion.

l

Only the sound of flames and distant screams echoed through the ruined city.

Time passed slowly.

“It’s time! We’re moving!” Eventually the commander shouted.

Several demons grabbed the ropes connected to the carts and began dragging them.

The metal wheels scraped against the burned stone roads…

And the carts, with the prisoners inside, began to move forward.
