Chapter 515: Monster From The Coffin
The Forgotten Echoes usually appear in places tied to deep hatred or obsession. That’s why both of them were shocked to see so many of them here, inside a hero’s tomb.
Why would there be this many echoes in the resting place of a hero? Was it hatred? But why would anyone hate a hero?
Could it be obsession instead? Maybe these were once the hero’s followers, people who couldn’t forgive themselves for failing to help him in the final battle. Their obsession might’ve turned them into echoes.
But Daniel and Drael both sensed that it wasn’t that simple. The shapes of these echoes felt more like something born from hatred.
It was clear, these things were filled with pure hatred, and that hatred was the reason they still existed.
“Watch out,” Daniel warned suddenly, signaling Drael to step back.
From the cracks and shadows, the Forgotten Echoes emerged, decayed bodies in cracked armor, faces that no longer resembled humans.
Their eyes were hollow, but from their open mouths came wails with no words, only pain and hatred.
One of them screeched and charged at Daniel, swinging its sword. The impact was powerful enough to shatter bones, but before the blade could connect, Daniel’s sword sliced through the air with a sharp “fsh,” tearing the creature in half.
Instead of blood, a black liquid sprayed out, thick and bubbling like boiling tar, splattering across the ground.
“Look again, it’s not dead!” Drael said with a frown.
Daniel turned and saw the same black liquid crawling up from the corner of the hall, reforming into the same echo again.
A deep scowl appeared on his face. He’d been able to kill echoes easily before, so why was this one different? Why wouldn’t it die?
Could its hatred be that strong?
The echoes began appearing from every direction, from the walls, from the ground, from between piles of ancient bones.
One of them lunged at Drael. He exploded his mana and stabbed his sword straight into its stomach.
Even as half its body was blown apart, it still reached out, gripping Drael’s wrist tightly and letting out a low groan.
“These monsters don’t want to die, or be freed. Their hatred… it’s too deep,” Daniel said between strikes.
“This doesn’t make sense. No matter how strong hatred is, it shouldn’t grant them immortality!” Drael shouted back. He too knew something was wrong.
Right now, there was only one explanation, hatred. The kind that words couldn’t describe anymore.
Another echo appeared behind them. Daniel spun around, raising the Sword of Death. The blade glowed with black energy, the Law of Death activated.
With one swing, a dark wave burst from his sword, cutting through several echoes at once.
Their bodies stiffened, their screams scraping through the air like metal against metal, and then they collapsed into dust. This time, the black liquid didn’t return.
They were truly dead.
In the end, it didn’t matter how powerful they were. It didn’t mean they were truly immortal, just harder to kill than normal.
By using the power of death, Daniel had given them death, targeting the root of their existence. And it worked. He killed their hatred, and with it, he killed them.
He took a deep breath. The stench of decay filled the air, walls were dripping, and hot vapor rose from the floor.
Moments later, everything fell silent again, only their heavy breathing remained.
“Let’s go. We’re done here,” Daniel said.
Drael turned to head back toward the entrance, but there was nowhere to go. The passage they came through was now blocked by rubble.
It was as if no doorway had ever existed. Just a flat wall of cold stone.
“What the hell happened here?” Drael muttered in disbelief. They hadn’t heard or seen anything collapse.
Daniel shrugged. Clearly, he didn’t care. And honestly, there was no reason to.
So what if it was destroyed? He could easily make a way out, and if that failed, he’d just use Fallen Step to leave.
He placed his hand on the wall to focus his energy… but before he could act, a harsh sound echoed through the chamber, dry, scraping, like nails dragging across stone.
Scratch… scratch… scratch…
Both of them turned. The stone coffin at the end of the hall was trembling softly.
Cracks ran across its surface. From the gaps, gray vapor seeped out.
Then, with a sharp clack, the coffin lid snapped open, and something rose from within.
A tall figure, only scraps of rotten flesh still clinging to its bones.
Its eyes were empty sockets, yet a faint cold light flickered deep inside them.
Its hands were like claws, and black vapor poured from its mouth with every breath.
Daniel immediately raised his sword, but the creature didn’t attack, it just stood there, staring at them with a calm, hungry gaze.
Its eyes… Daniel had seen that look before, in the Undead Sea, the same predatory stare that saw living flesh as nothing more than food.
And strangely, the creature looked exactly like the ones from the Undead Sea. The only difference was that this one was stronger, larger.
“…What the hell is that…” Drael muttered, stepping back instinctively.
The creature’s dried lips stretched into a silent smile.
Then, from deep within its throat, a muffled voice came out.
“Living ones… you’ve returned…”
Daniel tightened his grip on the sword. The dark glow of death gathered around the blade.
“You can talk? Interesting.”
The creature took a slow step forward. The ground cracked beneath its feet, and the air grew heavier, as if the space itself trembled under its presence.
It stared at them with hunger, like a beast that hadn’t eaten in ages.
How long had it been since its last meal? Even it couldn’t remember.
But now… it could finally feed again.
“You killed my little toys, human. Don’t you think you should pay the price for that?” the monster said playfully.
“I bothered them, and they broke. If you’re upset, I can send you to join them,” Daniel replied mockingly, not taking the creature’s words seriously at all.
At the same time, he was trying to guess the thing’s identity. This was the first time he’d seen a monster on this floor that could actually talk.
And not only talk, it was clearly strong. If Daniel had to guess, it shouldn’t be any weaker than a Half Step S Rank.
Still, he wasn’t worried. After the power boost he got back in the mountain range, something like this couldn’t be his match.
“You’re too bold, human. Courage isn’t bad, but when you face someone far stronger than you, the only thing you should do is beg,” the monster growled.
