Chapter 499: Bloody Peaks
“Did you really make this crack?” Drael asked as they started walking toward the mountain range, his eyes fixed on the massive rift beside them. He swallowed hard.
The crack was so huge it almost looked like a canyon, stretching all the way toward the mountains. The amount of power needed to create something like that was beyond his comprehension.
“I guess so,” Daniel replied indifferently.
Hearing his confirmation, Drael swallowed again in fear. He knew this young man beside him was powerful, but not this powerful.
If someone like Daniel existed, then killing even Divine Climbers might actually be possible, right?
He was now even more convinced that befriending Daniel had been a very good decision. With him around, he probably wouldn’t have to worry about his safety on this floor anymore.
After all, if this floor didn’t have the “Hell” difficulty level, there’d be no reason to be afraid. Unfortunately, the floor they were on was indeed Hell difficulty, and death here meant real death.
Before long, they finally reached the base of the mountain range. A dirt road led upward, winding along the rocky slopes. A spiral path could be seen going through the mountains.
If they wanted to cross this range, the spiral path was their best option. Flying was possible, but the mountain range was huge, and doing so would consume a massive amount of mana.
That powerful strike Daniel used to create the crack had drained a lot of his mana, and because of how dense the mana in this area was, it would take a long time for it to fully recover.
He didn’t want to waste his remaining mana on flying, it was better to keep it for emergencies.
“We’ll go on foot for now. If we have to, we’ll fly,” he said after deciding.
“Got it, but if we walk, it might take quite a while,” Drael reasoned.
“We don’t have much choice. We’ll keep walking until night, find a place to rest, recover our mana, and tomorrow we can fly out faster.”
“That’s a good idea! Let’s do that then.”
They started moving up the dirt road toward the top. The slope was steep, but with their endurance and physical strength, climbing it wasn’t too difficult.
The sun had already set, replaced by the pale light of the moon. The air grew colder, so cold that even they could feel its bite.
The higher they climbed, the colder and windier it became. The gusts were so strong they could almost knock them off balance.
Looking down from that height, they knew that if they fell, they’d have no choice but to use flight, or they’d be crushed to pieces.
The wind howled through the gaps in the rocky mountains, carrying with it sounds that resembled wailing and horror.
Even stranger, Daniel felt like someone was calling out to him. He mentioned it to Drael, but the latter said he didn’t hear anything other than the wind’s eerie cries.
At first, Daniel thought he was imagining it, but then he heard it again, someone calling his name.
Still, he decided to ignore it for now. The last thing he needed in this situation was to get involved in another problem.
“There’s a cave over there!” Drael suddenly said with excitement after spotting something in the distance.
“To reach it, we’ll have to go halfway through the spiral path,” Daniel said. He could see the cave too, but it was on the other side of the mountain.
“Better than nothing. If there’s no monster inside, it’ll be a good place to recover our mana.”
After agreeing, they decided to head for the cave. And even if a monster was there, they’d just have to kill it.
However, the moment they stepped onto the spiral path, both of them noticed something strange about the peaks around them.
The mountain tops were completely bloody, not stained, but covered in blood. From the peaks, red liquid flowed down, painting the rocks below.
Daniel walked over to one of the stones and tested the liquid. It was real blood.
But where had this much blood come from? How could there be enough to cover entire mountain peaks? What was even stranger was that the blood was warm, fresh.
And yet, ever since they had entered the mountain range, they hadn’t seen a single living creature. Fresh, warm blood made absolutely no sense.
Their eyes met, and a chilling wind made both of them shiver. Their instincts began to whisper that something about this place was deeply wrong.
Especially the wailing carried by the wind, it sounded like the cries of conscious beings in pain and agony.
It was as if countless people were being tortured, slaughtered, and screaming in fear, their voices carried toward them by the wind.
Without wasting time, the two of them continued toward the cave. The faster they reached it and recovered their mana, the better.
At least inside a cave, if something attacked, they’d have the advantage of cover and a more defensible position.
But on this massive spiral path, if something happened, it could be dangerous, especially for Drael, who was still recovering.
As soon as they entered the spiral path, Daniel heard the voices calling him again. This time, they were louder, and the words weren’t meaningless murmurs anymore.
They were saying—run.
For some reason, he felt a deep sense of danger. But he forced himself to suppress it and kept walking.
At that same moment, more drops of blood fell from the mountain peaks, splattering over the large stones on the mountain road.
The blood spread quickly, covering the stones as if trying to consume them.
The massive rocks were soon soaked entirely in blood, then, suddenly, they began to tremble.
All of them.
Daniel and Drael, who had already entered the spiral path, couldn’t see it, but if they had if they’d seen what was happening behind them they would’ve been utterly shocked.
Because those stones, which should’ve had no trace of life energy… now had it.
