Chapter 493: Burn Them!
As time passed, the sky grew darker and darker. The glowbugs that had once lit up the heavens gradually vanished.
Darkness swallowed everything, and even the surroundings were barely visible. The soft sound of the sea waves echoed now and then, mixed with strange noises, noises that seemed to come from the depths of the ocean. Sounds that alone could make any living being shiver in fear.
Daniel had been flying for hours in the same direction he’d chosen, yet he still hadn’t reached any sign of civilization, any living creature, or anything that even resembled it.
Slowly, he began to think that maybe he’d taken the wrong path. Unfortunately, the darkness made it difficult to see.
Still, as an Awakened, his vision was much sharper than an ordinary human’s. He could even rely on his spiritual senses to perceive his surroundings clearly.
However, keeping his spiritual senses active continuously drained a massive amount of mana from his body. Normally, that wasn’t an issue, since he could simply absorb mana from the air to refill his mana reservoir.
But here, he’d noticed that the mana was extremely dense, and his body had a hard time absorbing it.
The time it took to refill even one-tenth of his mana reservoir had increased from one minute to twenty minutes. Because of that, he was forced to limit the use of his spiritual senses.
“Hm?” Suddenly, he stopped and looked back, his expression turning serious.
However, there was nothing behind him. That only made him frown.
“This is the seventh time, and still nothing… am I getting paranoid?” he muttered to himself and kept flying.
He didn’t know how far he needed to go to find civilization, but he had no other choice but to keep going. This shore gave him a bad feeling, especially that eerie sea.
The sooner he left this place, the better. Even if it meant burning through a huge amount of mana, he was willing to keep flying nonstop.
Time passed slowly. He couldn’t tell how long he had been flying, but the sky only grew darker and darker.
Even the sound of the sea waves faded away until he could hear nothing at all. It was as if complete silence had swallowed the world.
He had already flown hundreds of kilometers and still hadn’t reached anywhere. It felt like there was simply no destination to reach.
“Maybe I should wait until morning,” he finally muttered, stopping with a sigh. He had already used up a large portion of his mana, and continuing to burn it like this wasn’t wise.
The best choice now was to rest a little, to let his mana reservoir refill and wait for daylight so he could see the surroundings better.
After making his decision, he slowly descended. But the moment his feet touched the ground, skeletal hands, with bits of rotten flesh still clinging to them, burst out of the sea and grabbed him, dragging him into the water.
“Damn—!” Daniel’s eyes widened as pain surged through his body. His skin and flesh began to rot and fall apart.
He tried to pull himself out of the water, but the hands held him tightly. Worse, within moments, dozens more appeared, clutching at his body, refusing to let him escape.
Before he could even react, all his flesh and skin were completely dissolved, leaving behind only his bones.
But then, even his bones began to decay.
Suddenly, a deathly aura burst from his skeleton, turning all the grasping hands into ashes.
Before he was completely killed, he managed to pull himself out of the water, stumbling back several steps. When nothing emerged from the sea, he immediately activated [Mana Healing].
His flesh, skin, and organs had all been destroyed. Luckily, his soul had remained intact, otherwise, he would’ve truly died.
As his body rapidly regenerated, he slowly stood back up.
At that moment, dozens of horrifying creatures rose from the sea — skeletal figures with scraps of skin and flesh still hanging from their bones.
They radiated an aura of death, looking like they had crawled straight out of hell. Their eyes glowed with a deep crimson light, as if capable of burning everything they looked at.
What was even stranger was that their bodies seemed unreal, almost illusionary, as if they were just shadows of corpses fading in and out of existence.
“Zombies? Or maybe… Undead? Though they resemble both, they’re also completely different,” Daniel muttered to himself as he stared at them.
This was the first time he had ever seen such creatures — he had never even heard of them before.
He stretched out his hand, and The Heavens Honor appeared in his grasp. A heavy wave of deathly energy spread through the air.
The eerie beings turned their hollow gazes toward him, then, without hesitation, charged forward.
With a single swing, Daniel cleaved half of them apart. The rest were instantly reduced to ashes by the lunar energy surrounding him.
The moon was still in the sky, and through it, he could easily draw upon the Law of the Moon.
He thought they were dead — but moments later, the ones he had decapitated stood back up and reattached their heads.
“…”
And the ones reduced to ashes? Their ashes drifted back toward the sea, reformed, and emerged once again — exactly as they had been.
Daniel frowned. He hadn’t expected this.
Did these monsters possess immortality? No, true immortality didn’t exist — but they clearly had something close to pseudo-immortality.
Even though they weren’t that strong, their physical strength was terrifying — strong enough to restrain him.
The blade of The Heavens Honor flared as both lunar and death energy surged through it. With several more strikes, he tore them apart again.
But once more, they revived, lunging at him, trying to grab him.
To his surprise, one of them even managed to bite him. Instantly, he turned that creature into ashes.
But as he looked down, his expression darkened, the wound began to spread, his flesh decaying and rotting at a shocking speed.
Then suddenly, a man’s voice echoed from the distance:
“Burn them! The only way to kill those monsters is to burn them!”
