Chapter 489: The devil is here.
The guards in the booths next to the gate zoomed in on Fifi and Amber before exchanging uneasy glances. They knew Fifi Quinn was a wanted woman. The bounty on her was enough to feed the whole town for the rest of the apocalypse. But ever since the bounty was announced, twenty people showed up every day with prisoners they claimed to be Fifi Quinn.

Some women even showed up voluntarily, claiming to be her. One had gone so far as to mutilate her own eye.

Anything to be allowed into the fortress!

But Sunshine’s instructions had been clear. The gates would not be opened, not for a while. So, they needed to inform someone high up on the food chain to come down and deal with the matter.

Major Elio was one of the superhumans on duty, one the Westbrook wall. He was wearing his exo suit, having taken it off only for cleaning and then redressing for watch duty in the night.

He was one of the first people to recognize both Amber and Fifi. He recognized Amber because Warren and Hadrian Quinn had secretly passed around pictures of her, warning all the people that guarded the gates and the wall never to let her inside.

Her blonde hair was tangled, her face streaked with dust, her eyes slightly red but burning with defiance. It was her, his vision would never lie to him.

As for Fifi, he had memorized her features because like others, he did not want to miss out on the bounty in case the opportunity ever found him and he stumbled on her accidentally. It did not help that she had taken to wearing an eye patch with a skull and two bones. As if she was some kid of pirate!

Fifi’s hands and feet were bound by ropes. Her working eye had a large bruise. Her clothes were dirty and ripped. She had scraped all over the exposed parts of her body, like her arms. It seemed like she had been dragged through some dirt, stones and shards of glass.

In the battered car, he counted six children and one adult male.

Immediately, he flew from the wall to the Westbrook command center. Warren Quinn was also on duty. If Amber was outside, he needed to know before Sunshine.

Warren was just about to sign out, end his shift and return to Westbrook Mountain. Suddenly, Major Elio’s head poked through one of the windows.

“She is here, Warren. The one you called the devil incarnate.” He said urgently.

At the same time, one of the comms officers zoomed in on the image of Fifi and Amber. “Sir, we have news from the gate that someone named Amber has brought Fifi Quinn and some of the missing children.” The officer looked at Warren, one hand on his earpiece. “Visual confirmation from the main base command center has just been sent. That is Fifi Quinn, the wanted fugitive. How do we proceed?”

Warren’s eyes were not on Fifi; they were on Amber. He barked orders in response. “Son of a bitch! How did the devil get here? No one opens the gates! Every guard should hold their positions. If Fifi tries to escape, shoot her, better yet shoot them both. I will wake Hades right now.” He sprinted for the window, boots pounding against the stone floor. “Fly me to the mountain Elio.”

Major Elio extended the arms of the suit, picked up Warren and flew off with him at the fastest speed.

But outside the walls, the survivors who had gathered were of clear hearing. They had all seen the flyers because they were pasted all over the wall. One was on the gate itself. They were drawn by greed and began to circle like wolves. A few rushed ahead while shouting angrily, weapons raised, intending to kill Amber.

Elijah stepped out of the car and fired a bullet in the air. “Back off.” he bellowed.

Some people shrunk away but others forged forward. This was their chance to turn their lives around. Just as Amber had risked everything to capture Fifi, they would also do the same. The bounty would be claimed by the one that turned her in.

Elijah shot and killed one man.

Chaos erupted.

Superhumans on top of the wall had no choice. The guards within the outer booth also had no choice. There was the matter of the children to consider. Fifi could be harmed, but the children could not.

While superhumans scared away the mob, Amber shoved Fifi back into the car. Elijah climbed inside as well, finger trembling on the trigger. Guards activated the outer area gate, allowing Amber’s car to drive into the parking area near the outer gate market before the mob could tear her apart.

Sunshine and Hades were still asleep when Warren and Major Elio crushed into their house. The Major broke their door open with one punch of the exo suit!

Everyone was startled awake and they came out of their bedrooms, armed with guns, swords and ice shards.

“Woah, put the ice down.” Warren shouted nervously. He hid behind Major Elio.

Sunshine glared at the pieces of her broken door which Tank was picking up. “You two had better have a good explanation for this or else, I am freezing you.”

Rubbing his eyes, Ariel lowered his sword. “The damage for this is coming out of your supplies.”

A grouchy Earl groaned. “I am too tired for this Uncle Warren. I worked sixteen hours yesterday.”

Castiel just used it as an opportunity to beg Sunshine to carry him and White walked to the living room, fell on the couch and continued to sleep.

“The devil is here cousin.” Warren shouted. “911, Mayday….all the other code words we have.”

Sunshine turned to walk back to the bedroom. Whatever this was, did not seem to be her business. The cousins could sort it out on their own.

Ariel gripped his sword. “Miss Amber is here.”

Warren and Hades turned to Ariel, horror in their eyes. He had never been involved in their private conversations. How did he know?

What kind of secret spy network was he operating to have ears around them?

“And she captured Fifi.” Major Elio pitched in, filling the silence.

Sunshine stopped walking. Sleep could wait.
