Chapter 481: The war in the sky…1
Two large trucks drove the team to the forest, the part that was not covered by the bubble. Three squads had been sent ahead to secure the area. Major Grayson and a small team of comms officers were operating inside a mobile command bus that Sunshine had finished repairing the previous night.
Drones hovered above, flying back and forth like insects being forced by gravity to remain within a certain space. The sky above glared with harsh rays, the kind that made anyone that was not in a solar bodysuit regret leaving their house for more than a minute.
One by one, the seven that would be taking part in the demonstration climbed out of the roof one truck and stood on its roof. They got into formation, with Sunshine naturally at the center. None of their heads was inside the exo suit helmets. They were smiling, laughing and teasing each other.
Sunshine was doing none of those things. She was observing the weather and their surroundings. They were close to the small lake in the forest. Hunter’s radar was already lighting up like an over decorated christmas tree.
She raised her hand and frost spiraled into the air before evaporating in a burst of steam.
“Not a great time for cryokinetics, eh!” Hadrian joked.
Sunshine laughed.
Hadrian spread his hands. “The invisible man is not affected by the weather. Hot or cold, my abilities remain the same.”
Sunshine looked at a drone and blew a kiss. “We are ready.”
Back at the base, in the conference room, Hades looked at the billionaires suspiciously as if one of them would steal the kiss his wife had blown.
“Was he always this crazy and jealous?” Jin whispered to Jon.
Jon shook his head. “We are unveiling new sides of the wolf, gentlemen. But that is not why we are here. We are here to see if these suits are worth every million we are going to spend on them.”
“You know what the upside is?” Cory asked.
“At least the suit is not tax deductible.” He sniggered.
He and Cory slapped their palms in a heavily energetic high five.
Hades ignored them. He was about to give the go ahead when Sheldon stopped him by raising a question.
“Why didn’t we get a choice in deciding who we wanted to test the suits? I can understand why the superhumans are there, but this Nimo and Nala. They are ordinary women.”
Cory winced. “Does it matter? Let’s just get on with the test. I have to meet my CFO to discuss the golf course I want to build in the fortress. Land is scarce around here. Sunshine needs to bring up this expansion plan soon.”
Before they could get even more destructed, Hades told Sunshine to go ahead.
On the screen, Sunshine’s lips clearly curved into a smile. She looked at the others. “Let’s fly.”
They activated their suits with a voice command. All features went live; their heads were sealed behind retractable helmets. The suits roared to life, thrusters igniting with a mix of heat and frost. The seven lifted off, leaving those on the ground in awe.
The billionaires were on their feet, some were sending for champagne, preparing to celebrate the suit that would someday make them ten times richer than they already were.
Above the fortress, the demonstration began. Sunshine’s suit shimmered with energy shields, and she explained what she was doing. A small ant sized drone relayed footage from inside the suit. She cloaked briefly, disappearing from the sky briefly before revealing herself again.
From the palms of the suit, icy mist burst upwards, creating a shortfall of snow flakes that melted rapidly.
The residents whose eyes were glued to the sky screamed in awe or fear.
Then the sky darkened, briefly. As expected the watchers were on the move, circling the seven from a distance. Pink screeched loudly, summoning a flock of mutated birds of every kind within the area.
Like puppets on strings, they descended, birds with wings that spanned twenty feet, talons that could cut stone. Their shrieks and screeches shattered fragile windows of buildings in Ferry Island and Kingsbridge.
“Ah,” Sunshine said dryly, “our company has finally arrived. Be sharp everyone, we are not just fighting other birds, the watchers too.”
Then a smaller watcher dove, talons outstretched. It aimed for Sunshine; sharp fiery eyes focused on her like it had mastered her features outside the suit. It gripped the shoulders of the suit.
Sunshine’s suit flared with heat, burning the feet of the creature. She spun, retroactive spikes extending from the arm of her armor. It sliced across the watcher’s leg. The creature shrieked and backed away.
“Nice cut!” Hadrian shouted, before mutated bird slammed into him. He vanished and it collided with a sword that went through it with a single stab. He vanished and reappeared on the back of an eagle to plant a sonic disruptor on its back. The beast convulsed mid-air, spiraling downward. “Call me your doomsday delivery man,” he quipped.
Major Elio’s fired missiles rapidly, “Stop showing off Hadrian, there are three more incoming from the South. All look like they want your head. And they are all ugly. One is uglier than the rest.”
Leah grinned, wind swirling around her. She blasted upward, creating a vortex that sent two birds crashing into each other. “Birds of a feather, crash together!” She grimaced. “Dammit Hadrian, now you have me doing it. I blame you and Father Nicodemus.” She released fire from the arms of her suit, thrusting it far with her wind. As it set two more birds on fire, she continued. “You know who else I blame? Phillip. And every other insane person on this base that thinks joking around in the middle of battles is a wise choice.”
Nala tossed a macro missile in the air, the explosion lighting up the sky. It burned ten bird beasts at once and she swooped in and collected them all. “We don’t waste food around here. All cooked poultry goes in the stomach.”
Sunshine approved.
Carson was not making jokes or smiling. He was taking the exercise very seriously. Not because it was important to Sunshine but because he saw what the suits could do for humanity. What they could do for their country…if the country still existed by the time the apocalypse came to an end.
The suits were their chance of fighting back in large numbers. The small number of superhumans they had was just not cutting it. If every soldier could get such a suit, they would never be afraid of mutant or mutated beasts ever again.
He slammed two shockwave fists into a giant eagle’s chest, the impact echoing like the strongest and loudest drum in the world. They ripped through the flesh of the bird and as he pulled his arms back, its insides fell on the bubble.
In the conference room, the billionaires were half-terrified, half delighted.
“I will pay one hundred million for all seven suits.” Sheldon screamed
“I will double it if they can cook.” Jon countered.
In the sky, Sunshine was freezing and shattering birds. “Adaptive cooling feature works,” she announced chirpily, as if narrating a commercial.
Suddenly, the birds stopped attacking and fell back.
